The modern models carry forward recognizable cues, but they are reinterpretations—not proof that a current Seiko 5 Sports watch has the SKX007’s specifications or intended use.
What is a Seiko SKX?
“SKX” refers to a family of Seiko watches rooted in diver’s-watch design. The SKX007 is its best-known archive reference and the model Seiko names as the inspiration behind the contemporary SKX series. Seiko describes the family as combining diver-style roots with a freer aesthetic suited to everyday city wear. Seiko’s SKX heritage page explains that lineage.
The SKX name can therefore mean either a legacy watch, such as the SKX007, or a current Seiko 5 Sports SKX-series model. Those are related, but not interchangeable, identities.
What design did the current SKX series inherit?
Seiko highlights the crown at 4 o’clock, which it says is positioned to reduce interference with the wrist, along with a dial layout derived from the archive designs. In the older design, a cross-line connecting the 3, 6, 9, and 12 positions supports legibility. The current SRPL83 reinterprets the archive’s markers rather than reproducing them exactly. Seiko’s page labels the SKX007 “the inspiration behind today’s model.”

That makes the relationship one of visual and historical inheritance, not a claim that every modern detail or function matches the original.
Is the Seiko 5 Sports the same as the SKX007?
No. Seiko describes the current Seiko 5 Sports SKX series as the successor to the much-loved SKX, but successor here means collection lineage. The current series is presented as a reinterpretation for everyday city wear, and specifications vary by reference.

The broader Seiko 5 timeline also matters: Seiko traces the collection’s roots to the Sportsmatic 5 in 1963, dates the establishment of Seiko 5 Sports to 1968, and says the collection was rebranded in 2019. Seiko’s US heritage page describes that rebranding as carrying watch culture forward to a new generation. Seiko’s Seiko 5 Sports history provides that context.
What are the specifications of a current Seiko 5 Sports SKX model?
Specifications must be checked against the exact reference. One example, the SRPD79K1, is listed by Seiko Boutique UK with a 4R36 automatic calibre and 10 bar water resistance. The 10 bar figure belongs to this listed current model; it should not be transferred to the archive SKX007.

What replaced the Seiko SKX007?
Seiko’s current Seiko 5 Sports SKX series is the official successor line, rather than a single one-for-one replacement with identical specifications. Seiko’s US SKX-series page lists multiple current models; when checked on 2026-10-04, it displayed the SRPD51 at USD 350. That price is specific to Seiko’s US listing and may change. A bezel and familiar styling do not by themselves make a current Seiko 5 Sports model equivalent to the SKX007 or establish that it is a certified diver. Compare the intended use and published water resistance for the exact reference.

- Identify the reference. Confirm the exact model number and whether it is a legacy SKX or a currently listed Seiko 5 Sports model.
- Separate design from specifications. Shared styling and lineage do not establish equivalent movement, case dimensions, water resistance, or intended use.
- Check the relevant product information. Use the specification sheet or official listing for that reference, particularly for water resistance and movement.
- For a legacy purchase, assess the individual watch. Verify condition, authenticity, service history, remaining water resistance, and seller rather than inferring them from the model name or appearance.
Seiko’s official collection listings establish current model context, but they do not establish the availability of new-old-stock SKX007 watches from authorized sellers or a reliable current secondary-market price. Treat a legacy example as an individual used-watch purchase and ask for reference-specific evidence.
