“SSC995” is not confirmed in the official Seiko records reviewed. Seiko identifies the Edo Purple Speedtimer made for the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships as SSC955 internationally and SBDL119 in Japan. The watch is a 39 mm solar chronograph limited to 6,000 pieces worldwide.
Is the Seiko Edo Purple Speedtimer SSC995 or SSC955?
Seiko’s June 2025 international announcement names the watch SSC955. Seiko Japan’s corresponding product page uses SBDL119. The reference SSC995 appears in informal search wording, but it could not be verified in the official Seiko sources reviewed. A listing described as SSC995 should therefore be checked against the dial, caseback, packaging and seller documentation before purchase.
This 2025 model commemorates the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25. It is separate from Seiko’s later HBJ005, announced for October 2026.

Why the dial is called Edo Purple
Seiko says the dial color was inspired by “Edo purple,” a shade associated with the historic city that became modern-day Tokyo. The color was selected as the official color for the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships. The design also draws on Seiko Speedtimer chronographs from the 1960s and 1970s and the highly legible dial style Seiko says was introduced in 1972.
The screw-down caseback carries the event emblem and a numbered limited-edition marking. The Japanese-market package is specified with a purple-toned box and an event-logo cloth.

SSC955 versus the 2026 HBJ005
Both watches use an Edo Purple theme and the V192 solar chronograph movement, but they commemorate different occasions and are not the same model.
| Feature | 2025 SSC955 / Japan SBDL119 | 2026 HBJ005 |
|---|---|---|
| Occasion | World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 | Seiko 145th anniversary |

| Reference by market | SSC955 internationally; SBDL119 in Japan | HBJ005 |
The smaller 39 mm case and Tokyo 2025 caseback emblem are the clearest ways to separate the earlier event edition from the larger anniversary model.

What to verify before buying an “SSC995”
- Ask for a clear photo of the caseback and confirm whether the reference is SSC955 or SBDL119.
- Check that the case measures approximately 39.0 mm across, rather than the 41.4 mm size associated with HBJ005.
- Confirm the numbered limited-edition caseback and Tokyo 2025 World Athletics emblem.
- Match the seller’s region, warranty terms and tax-inclusive price to the published regional references.
- Treat claims of current scarcity, resale value or stock as seller-specific until verified on a live listing.
Who this Speedtimer suits
The 2025 model is aimed at buyers who want a compact mechanical-style sports chronograph appearance with solar convenience, sapphire crystal and a strong Tokyo event connection. Its 39 mm diameter is notably smaller than HBJ005’s 41.4 mm case, while the 13.3 mm thickness and steel bracelet give it substantial wrist presence. Buyers primarily interested in the 2026 anniversary celebration should look for HBJ005 instead of assuming an “Edo Purple” listing is the 2025 watch.
