A Galaxy Ring reportedly swelled while technology creator Daniel Rotar was wearing it, leaving it stuck on his finger before a flight. He was denied boarding and later had the ring removed at a hospital. Samsung subsequently attributed the swelling to a crack in the ring’s internal moulding and said its investigation found no wider product battery safety risk. That is Samsung’s conclusion about one reported incident—not evidence of how often this can happen.
What happened to the Galaxy Ring?
In September 2025, Rotar posted that his Galaxy Ring’s battery had started swelling while it was on his finger and he was about to board a flight. He said the ring prevented him from boarding and was later removed at a hospital. These are Rotar’s account of the event; his description of the battery swelling is not, by itself, a technical diagnosis.
Samsung initially told 9to5Google that it was in direct contact with the user and would learn more about his concerns. The company said it would retrieve the ring for investigation and described incidents like this as extremely rare. It also mentioned soap and water or cold water as ways to attempt removal.
What did Samsung’s investigation find?
On January 8, 2026, Notebookcheck reported Samsung’s conclusion following an examination by the company and further analysis by an independent external agency: the swelling was caused by a crack in the internal moulding. Samsung said there was no wider product battery safety risk.

The follow-up reporting did not explain what caused the crack, and it did not include the external agency’s report or a public technical analysis. Samsung’s conclusion should therefore be understood as the company’s reported finding about this ring, not as independently reviewable detail about the failure mechanism.
Does this show a wider Galaxy Ring battery problem?
No published incident rate or reliable figure for the frequency of Galaxy Ring swelling is established by the cited coverage. One reported incident cannot establish how common the problem is. Samsung’s statement that it found no wider product battery safety risk is a company conclusion, not a numerical measure of risk.

What to do if a Galaxy Ring is stuck?
Samsung Australia’s support guidance recommends gentle removal steps and advises against trying to cut the ring yourself. Its directions are for a stuck ring; they are not a substitute for urgent medical care if there is a medical concern.
- Wet the finger with cool water and apply a small amount of soap. Gently twist and slide the ring rather than pulling forcefully.
- If the finger is swollen, cool it for a few minutes and wait for the swelling to subside. Elevating the hand may also help.
- If these steps do not work, seek professional assistance. Samsung warns against cutting the ring yourself because it contains electronics and a battery; its support page identifies an orientation mark for professional cutting.
These removal instructions are from Samsung Australia and may not describe support arrangements in every country. If the ring is swollen, damaged, or cannot be removed safely, get appropriate professional help rather than using consumer cutting tools.
