The Royal Oak “Jumbo” is the collector’s name for the extra-thin 39 mm branch of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak family. It began with the 5402, presented in 1972, and its best-documented successors include the 14802, 15002, 15202 and 16202. The nickname reflects how the original case seemed oversized in its era—not a claim that 39 mm is unusually large by today’s standards.
Why is the Royal Oak called “Jumbo”?
“Jumbo” began as a collector nickname for the 39 mm Royal Oak. At the time of the original’s 1972 debut, that case size looked unusually imposing beside many watches of the period. The name stuck to the extra-thin lineage even as Royal Oak sizing changed over subsequent decades.
The nickname is useful shorthand, not a complete technical definition: not every 39 mm Royal Oak is necessarily a Jumbo, and the family includes special editions beyond the principal references covered here. Audemars Piguet’s Heritage team describes the history in its company-produced Royal Oak “Jumbo” account. AP Chronicles is a manufacturer source, valuable for the company’s model history but not independent reporting.

5402: the original Royal Oak
Audemars Piguet presented model 5402 at the Basel Fair in 1972. The company credits Gérald Genta with its design and says development took two years. Its 39 mm case established the scale that later generations would preserve as the Jumbo’s defining proportion.
AP says the planned 1,000-piece run ultimately became 6,050 units produced and sold between 1972 and 2002. That is a total across the stated sales period, not production in 2002 or an estimate of how many examples survive. These details come from the manufacturer’s 5402 model record.

From anniversary reinterpretation to modern revival
14802 and 15002
The 14802 arrived in 1992 as a 20th-anniversary reinterpretation of the Royal Oak. In 1996, the 15002 followed in the lineage before the model’s modern revival. The available manufacturer history establishes their places and dates in the sequence, but does not provide a consistent set of case-material, dial, or movement specifications for comparing both references here.

15202: the 39 mm format returns
Introduced in 2000 as the successor to the 15002, the 15202 renewed the Jumbo in its 39 mm ultra-thin form. Audemars Piguet’s Heritage history also records later changes to the 15202’s dial, caseback and design, including an update in 2012. Those changes are part of the reference’s longer run; they do not make every 15202 identical in appearance.

In 2022, the 16202 succeeded the 15202 for the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary. It retained the lineage’s original design codes while replacing the long-serving Calibre 2121 with Calibre 7121, according to Audemars Piguet’s Heritage account.

What defines the Jumbo lineage—and what the record does not establish
The through-line is an extra-thin Royal Oak built around the original 39 mm scale, with the 16202 carrying those design codes into the anniversary era. The family’s continuity does not mean every generation shared the same dial, caseback or movement: the 15202 changed over time, and the 16202 brought a new calibre.
The cited manufacturer histories document key milestones and selected specifications; they do not establish present-day market value, current production status, availability, or a complete specification comparison for every reference and variation. AP’s Heritage team describes its company-produced catalogue raisonné project and scope on the AP Chronicles project page.
