The escapement meters energy from a watch’s gear train, releasing it in controlled steps and delivering impulses to the regulating element that sets the pace. Its evolution has involved different ways to manage impulse, friction, wear and consistency—not a simple march in which each new design replaced the last. Modern examples range from Omega’s production Co-Axial escapement to silicon-based constant-force mechanisms and Breguet’s experimental magnetic design. Their makers describe distinct engineering goals, but the available accounts do not establish a shared, independent performance ranking.
What an escapement does
A wound watch stores energy in its mainspring. As that spring unwinds, the gear train transmits energy toward the balance, the oscillating regulator that governs the watch’s pace. The escapement alternately locks and releases the train while giving the regulator impulses. This lets the train deliver energy in measured increments rather than simply running down freely.
The details matter: an escapement’s geometry influences how energy reaches the regulator and how the mechanism handles contact, friction and changes in the force available from the mainspring. The escapement works with the regulator; it is not the same thing as the balance or balance spring. This account concerns mechanical watches, especially wristwatches. Clock escapements belong to the broader history of timekeeping, but the recent examples here are watch technologies.
How watch escapements evolved
Escapement history is part of the wider development of watch regulating organs. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s history series offers an overview extending from early mechanisms to later regulating systems and silicon designs. The broad lesson is that watchmakers have repeatedly explored how to regulate a gear train reliably while managing friction, wear and stable timekeeping.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That history should not be read as a single sequence of designs, each wholly superseding the previous one. Different escapements can coexist because they address different engineering priorities, and specialized mechanisms may remain useful after alternatives appear. The available historical overview is not enough to assign every early milestone or disputed invention date in detail.
Recent innovations and what they are trying to solve
Omega Co-Axial: changing the contact arrangement
Omega traces its Co-Axial escapement to George Daniels’s invention and says it introduced the system in production in 1999. Omega’s corporate explanation is that the design reduces frictional contact and the need for lubrication compared with conventional arrangements. Those are the manufacturer’s stated design rationale and claim; the cited account does not provide an independent, controlled comparison of accuracy or long-term service intervals.

Constant-force mechanisms: managing changing mainspring force
A constant-force mechanism aims to make the impulse delivered to the regulator more uniform as the mainspring’s available force changes while it unwinds. It addresses a different problem from reducing friction alone: the goal is greater consistency in force delivery over the running watch.
Swatch Group’s 2026 corporate account says Abraham-Louis Breguet patented a constant-force escapement in 1798. Girard-Perregaux describes its Constant Escapement L.M. as a silicon-based development first presented as a prototype in 2008 and put into manufacture in 2013. The dates and development history here are the companies’ accounts.

For its Neo Constant Escapement, Girard-Perregaux reports 13 patents employed, 30% of them new, and COSC chronometer certification. Those patent figures are manufacturer-reported details for that named model; they do not describe constant-force escapements as a whole.
Silicon: new material choices for regulating components
Silicon is used in different ways across modern watch developments, including in springs and flexible components. Omega dates its Si14 silicon balance spring to 2008 and describes it as thin, resilient, shock-resistant and unaffected by magnetic fields. The Si14 is a balance spring, not a claim that Omega’s entire escapement is made of silicon.

Girard-Perregaux describes silicon in the Constant Escapement L.M., while Ulysse Nardin recounts silicon escapement and movement experiments across the Freak line. A property claimed for one component or design should not be assumed to apply to every silicon part, or to establish a general service or performance advantage.
Magnetic and high-frequency experiments
Breguet presents Expérimentale 1 as its first magnetic escapement tourbillon, combining a constant-force mechanism with a stated frequency of 10 Hz. The company frames the Expérimentale line as an R&D platform for work involving materials, electromagnetism, vibrational mechanics and acoustics. The frequency and technical description are manufacturer specifications, not independent evidence of superior real-world accuracy, rate stability, efficiency or durability.

What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
These designs should be compared by their architecture and evidence, not ranked by a single headline specification. Co-Axial focuses on contact and lubrication according to Omega; constant-force systems target consistency of impulse; silicon describes a material used in particular components; and Breguet’s 10 Hz figure describes the stated frequency of one experimental watch. None of those facts by itself proves that a watch will keep better time in ordinary use or require less maintenance.
- Impulse and contact: ask how the design releases and delivers energy, and whether claims about reduced friction come from the maker or independent measurements.
- Force consistency: identify whether the mechanism is intended to compensate for changes in mainspring force.
- Materials: check which component uses silicon or another material; do not generalize a component-level claim to the whole movement.
- Frequency: treat a stated rate such as 10 Hz as a design specification, not a direct accuracy score.
- Production status: distinguish a series-production mechanism from a prototype, concept or experimental platform.
- Performance evidence: look for comparable independent measurements of accuracy and durability before drawing a practical ranking.
The available company histories and product descriptions explain how these designs are intended to work and identify selected dates and specifications. They do not provide an independent, common test of accuracy, durability or service needs across the named systems.
