The Fitness Apps I’d Download First on a New Apple Watch

Apple Watch already covers basic workout tracking. These apps add coaching, social activity history, strength logging, recovery analysis and outdoor maps—without turning setup into an app pile.

You don’t need a stack of fitness apps to get started with Apple Watch. Apple’s Workout app already records a wide range of activities and connects with Fitness and Health. I’d begin there, then add one app to solve a specific gap—such as guided running, strength logging, outdoor maps or social activity sharing. The key rule: choose one primary app to record each workout.

Start with Apple’s built-in Workout, Fitness and Health apps

Before downloading anything, try the Workout app. It can record many activity types and provides workout metrics; Fitness presents activity and training information, while Health stores health data and information shared by compatible apps. Apple describes the Watch’s built-in workout and fitness features in its Apple Watch fitness overview.

If your goal is simply to record walks, runs, rides or gym sessions and keep an eye on activity trends, you may not need another app. Third-party apps earn a place when they add a distinct job: coaching, a social activity history, recovery-oriented interpretation, set-by-set lifting records or richer outdoor maps.

Which apps are worth considering first?

This is a shortlist by purpose, not a recommendation to install everything. App features, compatibility and prices can change, so check the current App Store listing for your device and region before subscribing or buying.

Apple Fitness+ Guided workouts at home Workout and meditation content, with Apple Watch metrics when used with a Watch Content service, not a replacement for every recording app Apple lists U.S. pricing of $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year; eligibility and offers vary.

Nike Run Club: guided running

If you’re new to running or want someone to talk you through a session, Nike Run Club is the clearest first specialist app to consider. Guided runs and coaching plans add structure and audio motivation beyond simply starting an outdoor run. Apple includes it in its Apple Watch running-app recommendations, and Wareable’s app coverage also describes its guided-running focus. Start the run in Nike Run Club or Apple Workout, not both, unless you have deliberately configured how duplicate records are handled.

Strava: sharing and an activity community

Strava makes the most sense if you want a social feed, clubs, challenges or an activity history shared across services and devices. It supports several activity types, including running and cycling. Its value is less about replacing Apple’s basic recording than connecting activity to a community and an existing account history.

Strava’s Apple Watch setup guide explains the Health and Motion & Fitness permissions requested during setup. Its Apple Health integration guide explains how to manage Health access. Review activity visibility and map privacy before sharing routes: social features are useful only if you are comfortable with what your profile and activities reveal.

Gentler Streak: activity guidance without a push-every-day mindset

Consider Gentler Streak if your priority is building a sustainable routine, returning after a break or paying attention to how activity fits alongside rest. It is a guidance layer, not a substitute for medical advice or a diagnosis. Apple has featured it in its Apple Watch app collection and editorial running-app selection.

Athlytic: recovery-style analysis from Health data

Athlytic is aimed at people who want recovery or readiness-style interpretation of data collected through Apple Health. Its scores are derived metrics—not direct measurements of recovery, proof of overtraining or a clinical assessment. The results depend on the underlying data, so a new Watch owner may get more value after wearing the device consistently and allowing relevant health measurements to accumulate. Apple lists Athlytic in its Apple Watch app collection; check the listing for its current subscription and trial terms.

WorkOutDoors: richer outdoor screens and maps

WorkOutDoors is a specialist to consider if you regularly run trails, hike or cycle outdoors and want more configurable data screens or detailed maps than the default experience provides. It is probably unnecessary for someone whose workouts are mainly indoors or who only needs a basic walk record. Check current map, route-import and offline behavior, watchOS compatibility and the purchase model in the app listing before relying on it for a long or remote outing. Detailed mapping, GPS and audio use can also affect battery life, so try a short activity before depending on the setup for a major outing.

Apple Watch SE 3 [GPS 40mm] Smartwatch with Starlight Aluminum Case with Starlight Sport Band - S/M. Fitness and Sleep Trackers, Heart Rate Monitor, Always-On Display, Water Resistant
  • GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
  • A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.
  • KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—SE 3 is a smartwatch that can detect a hard fall or severe car crash and automatically help connect you to emergency services and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
  • WOMEN’S HEALTH INSIGHTS—SE 3 has advanced sensors that track your wrist temperature while you sleep. With this smartwatch, you can log your periods and symptoms, get period predictions, and get notified of cycle deviations.*
  • GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*

SmartGym or Hevy: a real strength-training log

For lifting, choose SmartGym or Hevy if you want to remember the actual program—exercises, sets, reps, rests and weights—rather than simply record that a strength workout happened. Apple’s Workout app can record a session, but that is different from maintaining a detailed training log. Pick one app and check whether its current Watch version supports the logging workflow you want; pricing and the split between free and paid features can change. Apple includes SmartGym in its Apple Watch app collection.

TrainingPeaks: structured endurance plans

TrainingPeaks is for athletes following a coach’s plan or scheduled endurance workouts, not people who only want to count exercise sessions. Its Apple Watch and Apple Health integration guide describes supported structured-workout workflows and how to retry an activity marked “Import Failed.” The guide’s cited run-power-target workflow identifies Apple Watch Ultra as the model that displays those targets and ranges; don’t assume that specific feature applies to every Watch. If a sync fails, check the status in TrainingPeaks and use its retry option where available.

Apple Fitness+: guided content, not a required tracker

Fitness+ is the Apple ecosystem’s guided workout and meditation service. Apple currently describes 12 workout types plus meditation, with new sessions added weekly and real-time metrics when used with Apple Watch. In the U.S., Apple lists it at $9.99 monthly or $79.99 annually, with a one-month offer for new subscribers and eligible-device promotions that may offer three months. Availability and eligibility vary by country and device; see Apple Fitness+ and Apple’s January 2026 availability and offer details. It is for people who want classes and guided sessions, not something you need just to track a workout.

Build a starter stack around your activity

For most people, the sensible starting point is Apple Workout plus, at most, one specialist app. Add another only when it does a different job you actually want.

Casual fitness

  • Start with Apple Workout, Fitness and Health.
  • Add Nike Run Club if guided runs would help, or Strava if sharing and community matter more.
  • Skip recovery dashboards until you know which question you want them to answer.

Running

  • Choose Nike Run Club for guided sessions and coaching.
  • Choose Strava for community and activity sharing, or keep Apple Workout as the simple native recorder.
  • Choose WorkOutDoors if detailed outdoor maps and configurable screens are the specific need.
  • Add a separate analysis app only when you understand what its extra metric contributes.

Cycling

  • Use Apple Workout for straightforward ride recording.
  • Use Strava for activity history and social sharing.
  • Consider WorkOutDoors for outdoor maps or TrainingPeaks for a structured coaching plan.

Hiking and trail use

  • Consider WorkOutDoors for workout screens and outdoor tracking.
  • Use a route-discovery app such as AllTrails, komoot or Footpath if finding routes is the main job; Apple’s Watch-compatible app grouping lists outdoor and route options.
  • Before a remote trip, verify regional route availability, offline-map behavior and what requires a phone, network connection or prior download.

Strength training

  • Choose SmartGym or Hevy for a persistent exercise and set log.
  • Keep Apple Workout if you also want a broad workout record in Apple’s ecosystem, but avoid unintentionally logging the same session twice.

Coached endurance or recovery goals

  • Start with TrainingPeaks if a coach or plan is organizing your training.
  • Add Strava only if sharing or community is part of the routine.
  • For recovery-style interpretation, pick either Gentler Streak for balanced activity guidance or Athlytic for data-oriented analysis; neither supplies a medical verdict.

Install apps and grant only the access you need

Install the Watch version

  1. Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
  2. Open the My Watch tab and scroll to Available Apps.
  3. Tap Install beside a compatible app. You can also download apps through the iPhone App Store and install the Watch component if one is available.
  4. If it does not appear, confirm the app has an Apple Watch version, update the app and both devices, check Available Apps again, then restart the iPhone and Watch. Also check Watch storage and that it is paired with the intended iPhone; consult the developer’s compatibility notes if the component remains unavailable.

Menu labels can vary by software version. An iPhone app does not necessarily include a Watch app, so check compatibility before choosing it.

Review Health and device permissions

Grant only the permissions needed for the app’s job. Depending on what it does, these may include workouts, active energy, heart rate, heart-rate variability, distance, route or sleep data, plus Motion & Fitness access and notifications. You can review Health access by app in Health’s data-access settings. For Strava, follow its Health integration instructions rather than assuming every data category should be enabled.

Choose one primary recorder to prevent duplicates

Several apps may write similar workout records to Apple Health. If Apple Workout and a third-party tracker both save the same run, you can end up with duplicate workouts or confusing totals. Pick one recording route for each session, then configure imports and writes deliberately.

  • Native-first: Record with Apple Workout, then enable an import to a service such as Strava if you want its social history.
  • Specialist-first: Record in Nike Run Club, Strava, WorkOutDoors or another chosen app. Review automatic imports and Health write access so the same activity is not also recorded independently.
  • Coach-first: Use the supported TrainingPeaks structured-workout workflow and check which service creates the final workout record.

If workout counts, distance or energy totals look inflated, review each app’s Health read/write permissions and source settings before changing multiple apps at once. Keep the one source you intend to use and disable unnecessary duplicate writes or imports.

What I would leave off the first-day download list

  • Multiple run recorders: Pick one primary recorder, not Apple Workout, Nike Run Club, Strava and WorkOutDoors all recording the same run.
  • Several recovery dashboards: They can interpret overlapping Health data in different ways; more scores do not automatically make a decision clearer.
  • Overlapping subscriptions: Pay for a specific job—classes, coaching, detailed maps, logging or analysis—not a vague promise of “more fitness.” Apple Fitness+ is optional, and third-party prices and plan features should be checked before subscribing.
  • Navigation without a navigation need: If you do not need route discovery, maps or guidance outdoors, a map-focused app adds little to a basic workout routine.

Outdoor GPS, mapping, audio coaching, cellular streaming and long sessions can all affect battery life. Many workouts can be recorded without the iPhone nearby, but online content, syncing and map downloads vary by app. Check each app’s requirements and test your setup before relying on it away from home. Features also depend on Watch model, region and software, especially where particular sensors or workout metrics are involved.
