Grand Seiko’s 2024 45GS re-creations pair the limited 18K yellow-gold SLGW004 with the stainless-steel SLGW005. They share the same 38.8 mm case, hand-wound high-beat Calibre 9SA4 and historical design cues; the key differences are material, edition size and dated launch price.
Why the 45GS mattered
The original 45GS arrived in 1968, one year after the 44GS. Grand Seiko credits the 44GS with establishing the Grand Seiko Style; the 45GS carried that design language forward while introducing the brand’s first manual-winding high-beat movement, Calibre 4520. The new SLGW004 and SLGW005 revisit that particular combination of angular styling and hand-wound high-beat mechanics.
The recreations echo the original’s angular case, flat mirror-polished surfaces, curved case sides and vintage Seiko lettering. Their dials carry GS and Hi-Beat text, a 36000 frequency marking and the Daini Seikosha factory emblem. One notable modern change is the see-through case back: the original 45GS had a closed back. Grand Seiko’s September 2, 2024 release describes the new designs as closely following the original case and dial.
What SLGW004 and SLGW005 share
Both references use the hand-wound Calibre 9SA4, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 10 beats per second. Grand Seiko specifies an 80-hour power reserve when fully wound and 47 jewels. Two barrels and a Dual Impulse Escapement contribute to the stated reserve. The brand also says the movement was designed with attention to the tactile, aural and visual experience of winding; the display back makes its winding mechanism visible.

The shared case measures 38.8 mm in diameter and 10.4 mm thick. Grand Seiko lists water resistance at 3 bar and magnetic resistance at 4,800 A/m. The published mean daily rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day under the manufacturer’s stated test conditions. That figure is not a guarantee of the watch’s accuracy on the wrist: Grand Seiko’s SLGW004 product information distinguishes static movement accuracy from worn accuracy and notes that conditions of use can produce different results.

The Australian and Japanese prices are dated launch figures for their respective markets, not current quotes or direct currency conversions. In the 2024 release, Grand Seiko said the gold edition would be available through its boutiques and the steel edition through boutiques and select retail partners worldwide. The release provides the Australian prices and specifications; the Japanese boutique notice lists the tax-included Japanese prices and edition quantities.

Which one makes more sense for you?
Choose the SLGW004 for gold and greater scarcity
The SLGW004 is the choice if 18K yellow gold is central to the appeal and you want the rarer edition: Grand Seiko limited it to 200 pieces worldwide. Its launch prices were substantially higher than the steel model’s in both published markets. Those distinctions make the SLGW004 the more exclusive material-and-edition choice, but they do not change the shared movement or dimensions.
Choose the SLGW005 for steel and a larger edition
The SLGW005 retains the same hand-wound 9SA4 and 45GS-inspired design in stainless steel, with a worldwide edition of 1,200. Its dated launch prices were lower than the gold version’s in Australia and Japan. It is the more straightforward fit if steel is your preference and you want the movement and styling without opting for the gold case.

Availability is not the same as edition size
The US Grand Seiko Boutique page currently marks the SLGW005 as no longer available on that page. That is a page-specific status, not evidence that the watch is unavailable globally or from every retailer. The page lists a US price of US$9,700, but price and availability can change; check the US boutique listing or contact an authorized seller for current local information.
