The Rolex Explorer II was designed to solve a practical problem: in polar regions or underground, where daylight cannot reliably tell you the time of day, its extra hand completes one turn every 24 hours and points to a fixed 24-hour bezel. Rolex introduced the watch in 1971. Its central idea remains in the current Explorer II, even as the movement, case and travel-time function have evolved.
Why Rolex created the Explorer II
Rolex says the Explorer II launched in 1971 as an heir to the Explorer, intended for people venturing into environments where day and night blur. Its official history names polar explorers and speleologists—cave explorers—as users for whom natural light may not provide a dependable day-or-night cue. This is Rolex’s stated design intent, not evidence that a particular explorer wore a particular reference.
As Rolex puts it in its official history: “The watch featured a distinctive 24-hour hand, an invaluable aid around the poles and beneath ground when you can’t tell night from day.”
How the 24-hour hand works
The Explorer II’s additional hand makes one revolution in 24 hours and is read against a fixed bezel graduated over 24 hours. That arrangement lets the wearer distinguish daytime from nighttime when the usual light cues are absent. The bezel does not rotate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
On later generations, the independently adjustable hour hand also makes it possible to use the 24-hour hand and bezel as reference time while the main hour hand shows local time. Rolex describes this as a way to display a second time zone. It is a practical extension of the original day-or-night function, not a separate rotating-bezel system.
