The “world first GPS goggles with head mounted display” were the Recon Instruments and Zeal Optics Transcend GPS ski goggles. Introduced in 2010, they combined onboard GPS data with a micro-LCD display inside the wearer’s goggles. Contemporary coverage called them the world’s first, but the sources available here do not establish that no earlier competing device existed.
How the Transcend GPS goggles worked
An onboard computer gathered information from sensors and showed selected data on a micro-LCD inside the goggles. The optics made the display appear in front of the wearer, so the information could be viewed without looking down at a separate device.
New Atlas’s October 8, 2010 report listed speed, altitude, vertical odometer, distance, location, temperature and time among the live data. It also reported stopwatch or chronometer functionality. These were ski-oriented performance and location readouts, rather than a general-purpose screen.
Transcend lens options and launch prices
New Atlas reported two lens configurations and their US launch prices in 2010:

What changed with Zeal’s Z3 GPS
On September 22, 2011, Zeal Optics announced the Z3 GPS as a newer model building on the Transcend collection. The company said it had revised the optics and made the display less obtrusive. Its announcement also described ski-jump data capture, wireless controls usable from the wrist, arm or goggle strap, downloadable software for reviewing runs, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a claimed seven-hour run time.

Zeal announced a US$549 price and worldwide availability through specialty retailers and online at that time. These were the manufacturer’s statements in 2011; they do not establish present-day availability, software support or battery performance. Zeal marketing lead Joe Prebich described the product as giving riders control over the real-time data they wanted to see. That is a marketing claim, not independent evidence of performance.
How strong is the “world first” claim?
New Atlas’s 2010 article and contemporary product promotion used the “world first” description. A 2010 USPTO Trademark Official Gazette entry records goods language for snow goggles with a GPS head-mounted display and dates reported in the filing, but a trademark record documents what the applicant claimed; it does not independently verify historical priority. A Library and Archives Canada thesis index also provides corroborative context for Recon goggles using GPS and inertial sensors, but it is not proof that no earlier product existed.

The careful conclusion is that the Transcend was described at launch as the world’s first GPS ski goggles with a head-mounted display. The available evidence supports that it was an early named product of this kind, not an independently established universal first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the historical record does—and does not—tell buyers
The contemporary sources establish a product, its reported features, and launch-era prices. They do not verify whether Transcend or Z3 units can currently be bought, whether their software remains available, or which present-day goggles offer equivalent integrated GPS and display functions. A current listing for ordinary ski goggles should not be taken to mean that GPS or a head-mounted display is built in; verify those features for the exact model.
