The Stopwatch: About 200 Years of Measuring Elapsed Time

The stopwatch is about 200 years old—but its history has more than one milestone. Learn how Moinet and Rieussec shaped elapsed-time measurement and what stopwatches were used for.

The stopwatch is roughly two centuries old, but it does not have one uncontested inventor or a single invention date. Louis Moinet’s Compteur de Tierces is dated to 1816; Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec presented a horse-race timing device in 1821 and patented it in 1822. Those are distinct milestones in the development of elapsed-time instruments—not two accounts of exactly the same object.

Who invented the stopwatch?

There is no simple one-person answer. The claim depends partly on what counts as a stopwatch: an instrument designed to measure elapsed time, or a device more closely resembling the modern timer.

  • Louis Moinet, 1816: The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie dates Moinet’s Compteur de Tierces to 1816 and credits it with the distinction long attributed to Rieussec. The Seiko Museum also identifies it as an important early milestone. Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie; Seiko Museum.
  • Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, 1821–1822: Rieussec presented a device for timing horse races in 1821 and patented it in 1822, according to the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie. The Seiko Museum recounts that he made it at the request of King Louis XVIII. Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie; Seiko Museum.

Earlier attempts to measure short intervals provide useful background, but they do not erase the importance of those nineteenth-century developments. The Seiko Museum describes Samuel Watson’s 1695 Physician’s Pulse Watch as a stoppable pocket watch reportedly measuring to one-fifth of a second, and notes that practical stopwatch designs appeared in the eighteenth century. It also reports George Graham’s design measured to one-sixteenth of a second. Those are historical descriptions of particular instruments, not general claims about stopwatch precision. Seiko Museum.

When was the first stopwatch invented?

If “first” means Moinet’s Compteur de Tierces, the date is 1816. If the question refers to Rieussec’s purpose-built horse-race timer, the key dates are its presentation in 1821 and patent in 1822. Calling the stopwatch “about 200 years old” is a broad historical framing, not a precise anniversary tied to one universally agreed invention date.

The distinction also reflects different kinds of achievement: an early instrument for measuring brief intervals and a device developed for a specific public timing task. The available accounts preserve both milestones rather than establishing one date that settles every definition of “stopwatch.”

How did Rieussec’s first race timer work?

Rieussec’s apparatus was a mechanical inking chronograph, not a handheld timer like the one many people picture today. A pen mounted on an arm sat above a rotating dial. As the mechanism ran, ink marked the dial; the trace’s arc could be used to work out the elapsed time. The Seiko Museum says it was used at the Champ de Mars racecourse to record finishing times, not just the order in which horses crossed the line. Seiko Museum.

  • Package includes: 1pc x mechanical stopwatch 1pc x storage box 1pc x rope, Item type: mechanical stopwatch

The ink trace helps explain the word chronograph: the device recorded time. But its form and operation were unlike those of a modern pocket or handheld stopwatch.

What is the difference between a stopwatch and a chronograph?

A stopwatch is a standalone instrument for measuring elapsed time. A chronograph is an elapsed-time function built into a watch that also keeps ordinary time. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie puts it this way: “If the chronograph function is not associated with a watch as such, the instrument is simply referred to as a timer (or sometimes a stopwatch).” Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie.

  • Durable, dust, water, shock. Resolution ratio(1/10s), Size about 50 x 68 x 16mm.

In a mechanical chronograph, the watch movement continues to keep time while a clutch connects its power to the chronograph mechanism for measurement. Starting timing engages that connection; stopping disengages it. Seiko describes horizontal and vertical clutch layouts—different ways of managing that transfer of power. Seiko Museum.

“Chronometer” is not a synonym for either stopwatch or chronograph. The Seiko Museum distinguishes elapsed-time functions from precision-certified timepieces; the terms describe different things. Seiko Museum.

What were stopwatches used for before sports?

Sports and horse racing are part of the story, but they were not the only applications. Stopwatch use widened as factories, railroads, and cities increasingly organized activity around measured time. The Smithsonian’s “Mechanizing Time” exhibit connects interest in horse racing with the American Watch Company’s mass-produced stopwatch around 1859, against the broader spread of clock-regulated factories, railroads, and urban life. Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Military and transport

The Seiko Museum describes military use that included timing artillery-shell landing points. Later, stopwatches were used to measure car and airplane speeds. These jobs treated elapsed time as a way to observe events or calculate performance, rather than simply to decide a race. Seiko Museum.

Factory studies and the contested measurement of work

In factories, a stopwatch could help break work into timed actions and estimate how long a task took. The Smithsonian documents Frank and Lillian Gilbreth’s custom stopwatches and other tools for motion analysis, and says stopwatch studies remained part of industrial research into the 1960s. It also records craft-union opposition to methods intended to speed work and control workers’ time. Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

That history is not simply a tale of greater efficiency. Timing could inform the design of a task, but it could also be used to standardize work, intensify its pace, and increase management control. The same ability to measure an interval could serve different interests.

How does a stopwatch work today?

The basic operation is to start timing, stop the measurement, and reset the display. Seiko’s overview also lists continuous measurement, small-unit timing, and split times for multiple competitors among stopwatch functions. A split-time reading lets a timer record an intermediate result while the overall timing continues. Feature sets vary by device, so those functions should not be assumed on every stopwatch. Seiko Museum.

Most modern stopwatches are quartz digital devices. A digital handheld stopwatch remains useful when someone wants an independent timer for practice or repeated measurements; a watch chronograph puts elapsed-time measurement on the wrist alongside ordinary timekeeping. Which is easier to use depends on the task and the particular device.

There is no universal accuracy figure established for modern stopwatches. For a specific device, check its stated resolution and accuracy rather than treating the number of displayed digits as proof of precision. The Seiko Museum’s historical figures for Watson’s and Graham’s instruments describe those particular designs, not today’s devices. Seiko Museum.
