If your Apple Watch won’t pair with an iPhone 16, first check that your watch model supports the software on both devices, then confirm the watch isn’t still paired to an old iPhone. Keep the devices close, connected and charged while pairing in the Apple Watch app. If you’re transferring a watch, back up the old iPhone before unpairing or erasing anything: erasing a watch alone does not remove Activation Lock.
Check that your Apple Watch and iPhone software are compatible
An iPhone 16 does not guarantee compatibility with every Apple Watch model and software combination. Apple’s requirements vary by watch model and watchOS version; compare your exact model with Apple’s Apple Watch and iPhone compatibility table. Update the iPhone to the latest iOS it supports and install the latest watchOS available for the watch.
For Apple Watch SE, Series 6, Ultra, or later running watchOS 26 or later, Apple’s current setup guide specifies an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later. That requirement applies to those models and software versions, not every older watch configuration. See Apple’s watchOS 26 setup instructions.
Prepare both devices and try pairing again
- Unlock the iPhone and keep it close to the Apple Watch. For initial setup, the watch should be on your wrist and unlocked.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on and the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular. Turn off Airplane Mode on both devices.
- Keep both devices charged. For a transfer to a new iPhone, Apple says the watch and new iPhone should each be at least 50% charged, and both phones should be connected to Wi-Fi. Allow time for software updates.
Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone 16 and follow the on-screen prompt. If the camera does not start pairing or cannot read the animation, choose Pair Apple Watch Manually and follow the prompts. Apple’s setup steps are in Set up your Apple Watch.

If you have completed iPhone setup but the watch transfer did not finish, open the Watch app and check My Watch > All Watches for Pairing Not Complete. If it appears, choose Finish Pairing with the unlocked watch on your wrist.
If you’re moving the watch from an old iPhone
Before changing the watch’s pairing, back up the old iPhone. Apple says an iPhone backup also backs up the Apple Watch. If you make a computer backup, encrypt it to retain Health and Activity data; alternatively, use iCloud Health syncing if it is enabled. A watch backup only preserves data saved at the time of that backup, so later changes may not be restored. Apple explains transfer and backup options in Pair your Apple Watch with a new iPhone.

- Update the old iPhone and Apple Watch, then back up the old iPhone.
- Set up the iPhone 16 and connect both phones to Wi-Fi. Keep the new phone and watch at least 50% charged.
- With the unlocked watch nearby, open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone 16 and follow the transfer prompt.
- If the new iPhone instead offers Start Pairing, unpair the watch from the old iPhone before setting it up again.
Check whether the watch is still paired to another iPhone
If the watch shows a watch face when you are trying to pair it, Apple says it is already paired to an iPhone. When the old iPhone is available, unpair the watch there rather than simply erasing it:
- On the old iPhone, open the Watch app and tap All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the watch, then choose Unpair Apple Watch.
- After unpairing, start setup with the iPhone 16.
Unpairing from the old iPhone erases the watch, removes it from the iCloud account and removes Activation Lock so it can be set up again. Apple’s pairing troubleshooting steps are at If you can’t pair an Apple Watch with your iPhone.

If the old iPhone is unavailable
You can erase the watch from its settings and then try pairing it with the iPhone 16. Erasing it this way does not remove Activation Lock. You will still need the Apple Account and password used to set up the watch. If you bought it used and do not have those credentials, contact the previous owner; if you are the owner but cannot resolve the account issue, contact Apple Support. A reset is not a way around Activation Lock.

The pairing animation has been stuck for several minutes
Apple says resetting the watch from pairing mode may help. Follow the reset instructions for the pairing screen in Apple’s pairing troubleshooting guide, then retry setup.

The transfer shows a black screen with a white Apple logo
This is a different symptom from a stuck pairing animation. Apple’s guidance for a new-iPhone transfer says to restart the watch by holding the Digital Crown and side button until it restarts, then choose Reset and try pairing again. See Apple’s new-iPhone pairing recovery steps.
The devices were paired but will not connect
Turn off Airplane Mode on both devices, check that Bluetooth is on and the iPhone has Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, then restart the iPhone and Apple Watch. Check whether they reconnect after each step. Apple’s connection steps are at If your Apple Watch isn’t connected or paired with your iPhone.

When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if the watch meets the compatibility requirements and the basic setup steps do not resolve pairing, or if you cannot remove Activation Lock because you do not have the required Apple Account credentials. If the watch was purchased used, ask its previous owner to remove it from their account before attempting setup.
