Its mechanical Astronomer automaton is part of the timekeeping system: choreographed gestures indicate the hours and minutes, while a complex astronomical mechanism and an original musical device bring the clock’s theme to life. Vacheron Constantin says the project took seven years to develop.
What is Vacheron Constantin’s La Quête du Temps?
La Quête du Temps is an anniversary clock conceived as a work of horological and decorative art. Its central figure, called the Astronomer, is not merely a moving ornament. Vacheron Constantin describes it as the first automaton integrated into a timepiece movement as a functional time-telling complication. That “first” is the maker’s claim, rather than an independently established industry finding. Vacheron Constantin’s project overview presents the clock as a meeting of mechanical watchmaking, astronomical indications, craftsmanship and music.
The undertaking brought together specialists from different disciplines. The brand credits automatier François Junod with building the Astronomer, and composer and artistic director Woodkid with creating three musical sequences. Miniature painting, engraving, gemsetting, marquetry and enamelling are among the decorative crafts used in the project.
How does the automaton clock tell time?
The Astronomer indicates hours and minutes through a sequence of gestures. Vacheron Constantin’s technical page lists 144 gestures for the figure. The key distinction is that the automaton’s movements serve the clock’s time display; it is not simply a figure that performs independently of the timekeeping mechanism. The maker describes the clock as a functional integration of automaton and movement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The technical information distinguishes the movement from the automaton mechanism: Calibre 9270 is listed as having 2,370 parts, while the automaton mechanism is separately described as having 3,923 components. Those figures have different stated scopes and should not be added together as a confirmed total for the entire clock.
What complications does La Quête du Temps have?
Vacheron Constantin lists 23 complications for Calibre 9270. Among the functions and displays described by the maker are a perpetual calendar, sidereal time, retrograde sunrise and sunset indications, real-time constellation tracking, a three-dimensional moon phase and a 15-day bi-retrograde power-reserve indication. The brand says the 3D moon-phase mechanism can run for 110 years without correction; that accuracy claim is the maker’s.

- Moon: a precision three-dimensional moon-phase display, powered by a dedicated barrel and gear train, according to Vacheron Constantin.
- Running autonomy: a 15-day bi-retrograde power-reserve display. The maker says five barrels power the clock movement.
The clock also incorporates a custom mechanical musical device. Vacheron Constantin describes it as a 534-part mechanism combining a metallophone with Wah-Wah resonance tubes. The technical page lists 15 patents filed for the project; that is the brand’s reported figure, not a measure of independently assessed performance.
Where was the clock exhibited?
La Quête du Temps was the centrepiece of Mécaniques d’art at the Louvre in Paris from 17 September to 12 November 2025. The exhibition has ended; the cited Louvre exhibition page does not establish where the clock is now.

The Louvre presented the clock alongside historical horological works, including Renaissance astronomical clocks and 18th-century automata. Olivier Gabet, Director of the Department of Objets d’Art at the Musée du Louvre, described the collection as reflecting “an ancient, even immemorial, passion for complex mechanisms and more or less scientific machines.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is La Quête du Temps a watch, and is there a related wristwatch?
La Quête du Temps is a clock, designed as a monumental display piece. Vacheron Constantin also presents the double-sided Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Quest of Time as a separate wristwatch that translates the clock’s ambitions into a wearable format. It is a companion interpretation, not the automaton clock itself. The cited material does not establish whether that wristwatch is currently available to buy.
