Cartier’s Tank à Guichets followed in 1928 as a distinctive variation on the Tank. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is a natural Art Deco comparison, but it arrived in 1931—not in the ’20s.
That means a truthful guide cannot claim five separate 1920s launches from these examples. Instead, here are the decade’s documented designs and the early Art Deco neighbor that helps show where the era’s style went next.
What watches were popular in the 1920s?
The evidence here supports a focused account of Cartier’s Tank family and Rolex’s Oyster, rather than a definitive ranking of the decade’s most popular watches. Cartier’s archive records a Tank wristwatch dated 1920, while Rolex dates the Oyster’s introduction to 1926. The Tank à Guichets, launched in 1928 according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, is a notable Tank-family variation rather than an unrelated third lineage.
These dates establish that the designs existed; they do not establish sales rankings or how widely each was worn. Their significance is easier to understand by looking at what each design did differently.

Documented 1920s watch designs
Cartier Tank: a design carried into the decade
The Tank did not originate in the 1920s, but Cartier’s collection archive records a Tank wristwatch dated 1920. That makes it a documented example from the decade, not a design first created then. Its enduring value as a reference point is the continuity of a named design family across time. See Cartier’s Tank collection and the Cartier watch archive for the brand’s current presentation and collection records.
Rolex Oyster: the 1926 introduction
Rolex dates the Oyster’s introduction to 1926. The company’s history describes a sealed case intended to keep water and dust out, and recounts public demonstrations of its waterproofness. Rolex also says it advertised the Oyster in the Daily Mail in 1927. These details are the manufacturer’s account of its own history, not independent test results; the date makes the Oyster a clear 1920s launch, while its story also shows how a technical claim became part of a watch’s public identity. Cartier Tank à Guichets: a 1928 variation on the Tank
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry dates the Tank à Guichets’ launch to 1928. Rather than showing time through a conventional open dial, it uses apertures—small windows through which the indications appear. This makes it a striking variation within the Tank family, not a wholly independent design lineage. The Federation’s Cartier history describes the model and its display.
Why the Reverso belongs just outside the decade
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is often a useful Art Deco-era comparison, but it should not be counted as a 1920s watch: Jaeger-LeCoultre dates its birth to 1931. The brand’s account centers on its reversible case, which turns the dial inward. Jaeger-LeCoultre calls it “the synthesis of form and function” and describes the reversal as a fundamental idea behind one of its most inventive wristwatches; that is the manufacturer’s own institutional language, not a quotation attributed to a named individual.
