A watch bezel is the ring around the crystal. It may simply frame the dial, or it may carry a scale that works with the watch’s hands—and sometimes its chronograph—to time an interval, track another time zone, estimate speed, or orient yourself. Some bezels are fixed; others rotate.
What a watch bezel does
The bezel is the ring surrounding the watch crystal. Depending on the design, it can help retain or frame the crystal, add decoration, or provide a readable scale. The markings matter: a fixed bezel might be decorative, but a fixed tachymeter bezel can still be functional when used with a chronograph. Check the scale and the watch’s instructions rather than assuming that every bezel rotates or serves the same purpose.
Bezel mechanisms may be fixed, bidirectional, unidirectional, or internal. The useful question is what the scale is meant to measure and which watch hand or mechanism reads it.
How to use the most common functional bezels
Diver’s elapsed-time bezel
- At the start of the interval, turn the bezel so its zero marker, often a pip, lines up with the minute hand.
- As the minute hand advances, read its position against the bezel’s minute scale. That position indicates elapsed minutes.
Many dive bezels use a 60-minute scale and rotate in one direction. Citizen says bezels on diver watches conforming to ISO or JIS standards rotate counterclockwise only. This direction is intended to make an accidental movement indicate less remaining time, rather than falsely suggesting that more time remains.

A bezel gives a time reading; it does not replace dive planning, gas management, or dedicated dive instrumentation, and a bezel alone does not establish that a watch is suitable for diving. Specialist designs can differ: Monochrome describes a rare three-hour scale on the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa.
Tachymeter bezel
A tachymeter estimates a rate—often speed—using a timed interval over a known distance. Start the chronograph at the beginning of the distance and stop it at the end, then read the tachymeter scale. Citizen’s example: a vehicle covering 1 kilometre in 45 seconds averages about 80 kilometres per hour.

The scale may be on the bezel or around the dial. A tachymeter is not a general-purpose distance meter: you need both a known distance and a measured time.
GMT and 12-hour time-zone bezels
A GMT watch pairs a 24-hour scale with a dedicated 24-hour hand to show a second time zone. Depending on the watch’s hand-setting arrangement, the central hands may show local time while the GMT hand tracks home time, or the arrangement may work the other way around. Some rotating 24-hour bezels can be shifted to compare an additional zone. GMT watches do not all set time in the same way; Monochrome distinguishes traveller-style and office/caller-style arrangements.

A 12-hour bezel offers a simpler offset method: rotate it to the desired difference from the regular hour hand and read the second zone. Unlike a 24-hour scale, it does not clearly distinguish day from night.
Compass bezel
A basic watch compass bezel uses the sun and hour hand to estimate direction; it is not a magnetic compass. Citizen describes the result as approximate and says latitude and season can affect the reading.

For a simple analog watch in the Northern Hemisphere, lay it flat and point the hour hand toward the sun. The midpoint between the hour hand and 12 o’clock approximates south. Align the bezel’s direction markings accordingly. The alignment method differs in the Southern Hemisphere, so consult the watch’s instructions for your location. Some watches have calibrated electronic compasses; that is a different function from a sun-based directional bezel.
Other bezel scales and what they are for
| Bezel type | What it helps you do | How to read it or key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Worldtimer or city bezel | Compare times across several cities. | On some designs, align the local city at 12 with local time on the 24-hour scale, then read other cities. A city ring may support only one additional-zone comparison rather than a full world-time display. Daylight-saving changes and fractional-hour offsets need separate adjustment. |
| Countdown or regatta bezel | Track the time remaining until a target, such as an event or race start. | Set the duration against the minute hand and watch it approach zero. Unlike a diver’s elapsed-time bezel, it starts with time still to go. |
| Telemeter | Estimate distance using the time between a visible event and its sound. | On a chronograph, start at the visible event—for example, lightning—and stop when its sound arrives. The scale uses sound-travel time to estimate distance. |
| Pulsometer | Estimate pulse rate. | Count the specified number of heartbeats and read the scale. It is a niche timing aid, not a medical diagnostic. |
| Slide rule | Perform calculations such as multiplication, division, ratios, and unit conversions. | Use the inner and outer logarithmic scales according to the watch’s instructions. Citizen’s manual gives examples involving fuel, distance, motoring, and aviation. |
| Decompression or non-decompression scale | Relate dive depth and duration to decompression information. | These are specialist scales, including historical examples such as Doxa’s non-decompression scale. They are not a substitute for current training, dive planning, or appropriate equipment. |
| Hour-angle scale | Support a traditional celestial-navigation method. | Associated with sextant use and celestial longitude calculations, this rare scale is now largely displaced by modern navigation tools, according to Monochrome. |
How to choose a bezel for its function
Start with the task you actually want the watch to perform, then check what the scale requires. A rotating ring is not automatically useful for every wearer, and a marked scale may need another complication to work.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Task: Identify whether you need elapsed time, a countdown, a second time zone, a calculation, or approximate orientation.
- Legibility: Check that the numbers and graduation marks are easy to distinguish at a glance.
- Mechanism: Confirm whether the bezel is fixed, unidirectional, bidirectional, or internal, and whether it moves as the intended function requires.
- Other watch features: A tachymeter or telemeter requires a chronograph; a GMT scale requires a suitable 24-hour hand; other scales may rely on a particular hand or calculation method.
- Limits: Follow the manufacturer’s stated purpose and instructions. A city ring does not automatically account for daylight-saving rules, and a sun-based compass is approximate.
A brief history of functional bezels
Monochrome’s specialist overview identifies Rolex’s 1937 Zerographe ref. 3346 as the first rotating-bezel watch it discusses, and dates the first proper 60-minute diving bezels to the first half of the 1950s. The article identifies the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms as the first dive watch with a unidirectional rotating bezel and notes that early Rolex Submariners used bidirectional bezels. These are historical claims from that specialist overview, rather than manufacturer-confirmed statements.
