Seiko Spring Drive is a watch movement powered by a mainspring but regulated electronically. A quartz oscillator and integrated circuit control electromagnetic braking instead of a traditional escapement, giving the seconds hand its distinctive continuous glide. Its accuracy and power reserve vary by caliber.
How does Spring Drive work?
Spring Drive keeps the mechanical energy source of a traditional watch while changing how that energy is regulated. Seiko describes three stages: the mainspring supplies the motive power, the gear train carries that energy to the hands and Tri-synchro regulator, and electromagnetic braking controls the speed of the glide wheel.
As the glide wheel turns, it generates a small amount of electricity for the quartz oscillator and integrated circuit. The circuit compares the wheel’s speed with the oscillator’s signal and adjusts the electromagnetic brake. Because the gear train turns continuously rather than advancing in discrete ticks, the seconds hand glides smoothly around the dial.
Is Spring Drive mechanical or quartz?
It combines elements of both, but neither label alone describes it well. The mainspring—not a battery—provides the movement’s motive power, as in a mechanical watch. Quartz and electronic circuitry regulate the movement, while electromagnetic braking replaces the traditional escapement. Seiko characterizes it as a mainspring-powered movement with a regulator that has no escapement; that is Seiko’s description, not an independently established claim about every movement on the market.

How accurate is Spring Drive?
Seiko’s general technical overview and FAQ state accuracy of 1 second per day. That is a broad description, not a specification shared by every Spring Drive caliber. Model-specific published figures differ:

These are manufacturer-published specifications for the named calibers, not independent test results. Seiko’s heritage account of Spring Drive’s 1999 introduction also describes accuracy as 15 seconds per month, approximately 1 second per day; check the specific watch’s caliber and published specification rather than assuming a single figure applies to the entire range. When was Spring Drive developed?
Seiko dates the introduction of Spring Drive to 1999. Its technical overview says engineer Yoshikazu Akahane began pursuing the idea in 1977 and that development took 28 years and more than 600 prototypes. In 2005, Grand Seiko introduced its first automatic Spring Drive movement, Caliber 9R65, with a 72-hour power reserve, according to Seiko’s heritage chronology.
