The Peseux 7001 is a slim, manually wound mechanical watch movement with a traditional display: central hours and minutes, plus small seconds at six. Its 2.50 mm height makes it useful in thin watches, while its straightforward architecture has allowed brands to finish or redesign it in distinctive ways. Recent watches have brought it renewed editorial attention, though that is not evidence of a quantified market-wide resurgence.
Peseux 7001 specifications
ETA’s 2011 technical communication lists the ETA 7001 as a 10½-line “Etachron” caliber. Its figures describe that published configuration; individual watches may use a different grade or brand-specific modifications.

Stowa’s current movement page gives additional details for its listed top-version Peseux 7001: at least 42 hours of power reserve, 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), 17 synthetic ruby jewels, Incabloc shock protection, a Nivaflex NM mainspring and an Anachron hairspring. These are Stowa’s stated top-version specifications, not a universal specification for every 7001.
Why it is called Peseux 7001 or ETA 7001
The movement originated at Fabrique d’ébauches de Peseux. Specialist histories date its introduction to 1971/72; later ETA production accounts for the commonly used names “ETA 7001” and “Peseux 7001.” The names refer to the same basic caliber lineage, but a watchmaker or brand may use a modified version rather than an untouched stock movement.

ETA’s corporate history marks 1985 as the year it became a single undertaking, following a period in which it operated as a collection of ébauche factories under Ebauches SA. That corporate consolidation is a separate milestone, not the 7001’s launch date. What the 7001 feels like in a watch
Thin proportions and small seconds
At 2.50 mm high in ETA’s technical sheet, the movement can help a watchmaker create a slim case. The display is equally characteristic: hours and minutes occupy the center, while a small-seconds subdial sits at six. The balance of that layout depends on the watch’s dial design and case diameter, so the same movement can feel restrained in one watch and more prominent in another.

Manual winding and setting tradeoffs
Winding is part of the daily interaction: the wearer supplies power by turning the crown rather than relying on an automatic rotor. Specialist histories report that the 7001 does not hack, meaning the seconds hand does not stop when the crown is pulled out to set the time. That can make exact synchronization harder than with a hacking movement.
How brands have used and adapted the movement
The 7001’s simple, traditional architecture gives brands room to alter plates and bridges, add decoration, change regulation or build complications. Those changes can make a watch’s movement look and function quite differently from a stock caliber. Monochrome’s history describes use across several manufacturers, including NOMOS’s early use and later architectural development; where a brand has substantially changed the movement, it is more accurate to call it based on or adapted from the 7001 than simply a stock 7001.

Examples cited in Fratello’s September 18, 2024 feature include the Zelos Nova 37, Maen Manhattan 39 Ultra Thin and Baltic Prismic, alongside independent watches with reworked movements. Those examples show the caliber’s range and a period of renewed editorial visibility. The La Joux-Perret D100 is related, not the same movement
The La Joux-Perret D100 is described in Monochrome’s 2024 history as a dimensionally matching alternative introduced in 2023. That account reports the same dimensions and frequency, similar functions, no hacking seconds and a 50-hour power reserve, as well as multiple execution grades. The D100 is a successor or alternative in the same design conversation—not another name for the original Peseux/ETA 7001. The reserve figure here is reported by that specialist source, rather than confirmed against a current maker specification.

What to compare when choosing a 7001-powered watch
The movement name alone does not tell you how a complete watch will wear or what is inside it. Compare these details on the specific model:
- Case diameter and thickness: consider how the case sits on your wrist and whether the proportions suit the small-seconds layout.
- Movement execution: check whether the maker describes a stock 7001, a finished version or a substantial redesign, and inspect the movement photographs if available.
- Power reserve: distinguish the ETA sheet’s 42-hour running-time figure from brand-specific claims such as Stowa’s “at least 42 hours” for its top version.
- Setting behavior: verify whether the specific watch hacks; specialist histories report that the 7001 itself does not.
- Display-back finishing: decoration and bridge design vary by maker and can be a major part of the appeal.
- Total watch price: compare the whole watch, not just the caliber name. The sources cited here do not provide a current, directly comparable price survey.
For named models, check the manufacturer’s current product page or an authorized seller for present specifications and availability. The cited 2024 coverage establishes examples and editorial attention, not current stock.
