What does “new” mean for the Apollo 8?
OMEGA announced the updated Apollo 8 on 16 January 2024, presenting it as a refinement of the Apollo 8 version first released in 2018. The notable change is its movement: the manual-winding Calibre 3869 carries laser-ablated lunar relief across its blackened main plate and bridges. OMEGA’s 2024 announcement describes the dial-side decoration as the lunar surface seen from Earth and the caseback decoration as the far side seen by astronauts.
OMEGA’s 14 October 2025 announcement places an Apollo 8 powered by Calibre 3869 in the evolved Dark Side of the Moon collection. That collection also includes distinct models with different movements; the collection update does not make every 2025 Dark Side model an Apollo 8. OMEGA’s 2025 collection announcement identifies the Apollo 8 separately.
How does the watch connect to the Apollo 8 mission?
Apollo 8 became the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon in 1968. OMEGA says each astronaut aboard wore a Speedmaster. The watch’s near-side and far-side decoration draws on the mission’s view of the Moon, while the caseback inscription refers to the moment the spacecraft disappeared beyond radio contact on the far side.

OMEGA attributes the words “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE” to Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell. They give the caseback a direct connection to the mission rather than serving as a generic lunar slogan. OMEGA’s 2024 launch account provides the attribution and context.
What are the Apollo 8’s main design details?
Case, dial and strap
- Case: 44.25 mm, with separate black ceramic components for the case, bezel and caseback.
- Dial: Skeletonized black anodized aluminium, with the Moon’s near side represented on the movement beneath it.
- Tachymeter: The scale is filled with white Grand Feu enamel.
- Yellow accents: The central chronograph-seconds hand is yellow, as is the interior of the perforated black rubber strap.
- Small seconds: The hand at 9 o’clock is Grade 5 titanium and shaped like a Saturn V rocket.
Movement and lunar decoration
Calibre 3869 is a manual-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement. Its laser-ablated relief spans the blackened main plate and bridges: the dial side depicts the lunar surface visible from Earth, while the caseback shows the far side. These are manufacturer specifications published by OMEGA, not independent wear-test findings. The launch announcement lists the movement and construction details.

How to identify the current Apollo 8
Look for the combination of Apollo 8 branding, a black ceramic case, the skeletonized black dial with yellow chronograph-seconds hand, a black rubber strap, and Calibre 3869. For a precise model match, check the reference number: OMEGA’s reviewed Japan and Hong Kong listings identify this version as 310.92.44.50.01.001.
The reference and local listings are useful when distinguishing the Apollo 8 from other Dark Side of the Moon watches, especially the separate models in the evolved 2025 collection. OMEGA’s Japan product listing and Hong Kong product page show that reference.
