Why Does My Samsung Galaxy Watch Keep Disconnecting? A Step-by-Step Fix

Most Galaxy Watch disconnections come from Bluetooth range, phone settings, Galaxy Wearable background restrictions, outdated software, or a corrupted pairing record. This guide escalates from safe checks to reset and service.

Most repeated Galaxy Watch disconnections are caused by an interrupted Bluetooth link or by the phone-side Galaxy Wearable connection being stopped—not by a failed watch. Range, Airplane mode, power-saving settings, outdated software, a corrupted pairing record, and app background restrictions are common causes. Reboots, charging faults, overheating, or failure after a clean reset point more strongly toward hardware.

Use the checks below in order. Start with proximity and settings, then restart and update both devices. Only remove the pairing, clear app data, or factory-reset the watch after the low-risk steps fail.

First identify what is actually disconnecting

“Disconnected” can describe several different failures:

What you see More likely explanation Start here
The watch disconnects only after you walk away Bluetooth range or interference Test with the phone and watch within a few feet
The watch is nearby, but Galaxy Wearable says disconnected Companion-app, plug-in, or background-service problem Restart, update, and review battery controls
Phone Bluetooth says connected while the watch says disconnected Galaxy Wearable synchronization state is stale Update or repair the app connection
The watch shows a reboot logo or goes blank Restart, low battery, overheating, charging, or hardware issue Check power and charging before treating it as Bluetooth
It will not reconnect until you pair again Corrupted pairing record or compatibility problem Forget it in both the app and Bluetooth settings, then pair again

A Bluetooth loss stops phone-dependent notifications, calls, synchronization, and some health features. An LTE or Wi‑Fi watch may retain limited remote functions, but those require the right model, account, network, and settings. Bluetooth being off can prevent Samsung’s remote connection path; see Samsung’s connectivity guidance.

1. Check range, Bluetooth, and connectivity settings

Test at close range

Place the phone and watch in the same room, ideally within a few feet, with no bag, vehicle, wall, or other body between them. Samsung describes practical Bluetooth range as approximately 30 feet, but walls, bodies, interference, and other radios can reduce it; it is not a guaranteed indoor distance. See Samsung’s connection troubleshooting page.

Verify both devices

  • On the phone, open Settings → Connections or Settings → Connected devices → Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  • On the watch, check Settings → Connections (or Settings → Connectivity on some older models). Bluetooth should be enabled and Wi‑Fi set to On or Auto as appropriate.
  • Turn Airplane mode off. On the watch, this is usually under Settings → Connections.
  • Temporarily turn Power saving off on both devices while testing.
  • For LTE models, check mobile-network settings and carrier service. Disabling mobile networks can remove cellular service; LTE does not repair a broken Bluetooth link.

Google gives the same initial advice for Wear OS: Bluetooth on, Airplane mode off, and devices close together before more disruptive fixes (Android guidance).

2. Restart the watch and phone

  1. Restart the watch normally.
  2. Restart the phone and wait until it finishes booting.
  3. Turn phone Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.
  4. Open Galaxy Wearable and allow synchronization to finish.
  5. Test beside the phone before moving away.

A watch necessarily disconnects while it is rebooting. If it is frozen, use Samsung’s forced-restart procedure for your exact model; button combinations differ across Galaxy Watch generations. Samsung’s restart and shutdown guidance is at TSG10007323.

3. Update every part of the connection

Install pending updates for the phone operating system, Galaxy Wearable, the model-specific watch plug-in or manager, Samsung Accessory Service where installed, the watch, and Samsung Health when health synchronization is affected. Also install relevant Google Play system updates on Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On many watches, the path is:

  1. Open Galaxy Wearable.
  2. Tap Watch settings or the Settings tab.
  3. Tap About watch, About Gear, or About band.
  4. Choose Update watch software, Update Gear software, or the equivalent.
  5. Tap Update now or Download updates manually.

Labels vary by model and software version, and Samsung warns that the watch may disconnect during an update. Details are in Samsung’s update instructions.

4. Stop the phone from putting companion apps to sleep

Android battery management can stop Galaxy Wearable or its plug-in while the screen is off. This is a device-dependent possibility, not a universal Samsung diagnosis; community reports describe it on some phones (example and example).

In the phone’s app-battery controls, review:

  • Galaxy Wearable.
  • Your watch’s model-specific plug-in or manager.
  • Samsung Accessory Service, where installed.
  • Google Play services when relevant to your phone.
  • Samsung Health if only health data stops syncing.

Look for labels such as Never sleeping apps, Unrestricted battery usage, Don’t optimize, Allow background activity, or Auto-start. Menu names differ substantially among Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, Huawei, and other phones. Remove only the companion apps from sleep lists rather than disabling optimization for every app.

5. Repair a corrupted pairing record

Use this when the watch is nearby but will not reconnect, Bluetooth shows an old entry, or the problem began after changing phones or updating software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Galaxy Wearable, use its disconnect, forget, or unpair control if available.
  2. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and remove the watch from saved or previously connected devices.
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. Open Galaxy Wearable and start setup from there.
  5. Confirm the pairing code on both screens and restore a backup if offered.

Pairing only from the Bluetooth settings can leave the companion app unconfigured. Google’s Wear OS procedure also recommends removing the watch from Bluetooth memory and setting it up again (Android).

6. Clear Galaxy Wearable data or reinstall it

Do this when Galaxy Wearable freezes, crashes, cannot discover a visible watch, or repeatedly displays a stale status. Clear cache first if your phone offers that option; it removes temporary files with less disruption. Clearing data is more serious: it can require sign-in, permissions, and pairing again. Reinstalling the app or model plug-in has similar consequences, so back up first.

  • A PERSONAL ASSISTANT, RIGHT ON YOUR WRIST: Your Watch just became your personal assistant.⁴ Stay one step ahead of your day with a watch that helps you navigate your tasks and to-do lists.

Samsung discusses clearing app data for malfunctioning watch apps at TSG10007123. Clearing cache is not a guaranteed Bluetooth fix; it mainly addresses an unstable app state.

7. Factory-reset only after the software steps

Reset when basic settings, restarts, updates, app repair, and a clean re-pair have failed—or when Samsung support directs you to do it. A reset erases watch apps, settings, and data, so back up through Galaxy Wearable where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the watch, open Settings.
  2. Go to System.
  3. Select Disconnect and reset; some models say Unpair with phone.
  4. Confirm, then reconnect using Galaxy Wearable.
  5. Install updates and test the watch before restoring every app and watch face.

Google documents the data loss and reset path at its Wear OS guide; Samsung likewise recommends unpairing and checking updates at TSG10007123.

8. Account for model and phone differences

LTE and Wi‑Fi

LTE watches still use Bluetooth for the normal nearby phone relationship. Wi‑Fi may support remote functions in supported configurations, but it is not a substitute for initial pairing or every feature. Carrier activation, account setup, network availability, and watch model all matter.

Non-Samsung Android phones

A watch can pair successfully yet reconnect unreliably if the phone aggressively stops background apps. Exact controls vary by manufacturer and Android release; do not assume disabling optimization will solve every case.

iPhone and older watches

Compatibility and feature support depend on the exact watch, operating system, and companion app. Older Tizen-based Galaxy Watches use different menus from newer Wear OS models. When it is probably a hardware problem

  • The watch disconnects at close range with more than one compatible phone.
  • It repeatedly reboots, shuts down, overheats, or only reconnects after charging.
  • Battery percentage drops suddenly or charging is intermittent or produces errors.
  • Bluetooth cannot be enabled or remains unavailable.
  • There is water, impact, corrosion, or damage, or the problem began after a repair.
  • A clean factory reset and fresh setup still fail.

Samsung’s battery and frozen-watch guidance is at TSG10007149. For persistent close-range failure, request service through Samsung’s connection support page rather than replacing a watch that may only have a phone-side issue.

If troubleshooting fails: repair or replacement

Service should come before replacement when the watch works after a restart, fails with only one phone, or has not been freshly paired. Replacement is more defensible after failure with multiple compatible phones, repeated shutdowns, charging faults, or a clean reset. Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet lists Galaxy Watch8 Bluetooth at $349.99 (40mm) and $379.99 (44mm), LTE at $399.99 and $429.99, Watch8 Classic at $499.99 Bluetooth/$549.99 LTE, and listed Galaxy Watch Ultra LTE configurations at $649.99. These are MSRP figures, not sale prices, trade-in values, or repair quotes: Samsung’s June 2026 price sheet. LTE changes connectivity options; it does not fix a defective Bluetooth radio or a phone that stops Galaxy Wearable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Galaxy Watch disconnect when my phone is nearby?

The likely causes are a stopped Galaxy Wearable service, battery restrictions, stale pairing data, interference, or a watch reboot. Restart both devices, update the app and watch, then review background-battery settings before re-pairing.

Why does it disconnect overnight?

Overnight disconnections commonly reflect Android background restrictions or Power saving. Check Galaxy Wearable, the watch plug-in, and Samsung Accessory Service for sleep or optimization limits.

Why does Bluetooth say connected while Galaxy Wearable says disconnected?

The radio link may exist while the companion app or plug-in has lost synchronization. Update or repair Galaxy Wearable rather than assuming the Bluetooth radio is defective.

Will resetting Bluetooth erase my watch?

Forgetting the Bluetooth entry normally removes the pairing record, not the watch’s stored data. A factory reset is different: it erases apps, settings, and watch data.

Can a Galaxy Watch stay connected without Bluetooth?

Some LTE or Wi‑Fi models can provide limited remote functions, but carrier, account, network, model, and app conditions apply. Bluetooth remains necessary for the ordinary nearby phone connection.

Should I replace the watch?

Not until it fails close-range testing with multiple compatible phones and remains disconnected after a fresh setup. Repeated shutdowns or charging faults make service or replacement more reasonable.
