Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMost Samsung watch connection failures come from a stuck Bluetooth pairing, an incomplete Galaxy Wearable setup, blocked permissions, outdated software, an incompatible phone, or—on LTE models—a separate carrier-activation problem. Check compatibility first, restart both devices, forget the old Bluetooth record, and pair again from Galaxy Wearable before clearing app data or resetting the watch.
Identify what “not connecting” means
The symptom points to a different fix:
| What you see | Likely issue | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Watch does not appear in Galaxy Wearable | Bluetooth, compatibility, app, or another-phone connection | Check compatibility, restart both devices, and toggle Bluetooth |
| Watch appears in Bluetooth but not Galaxy Wearable | Stale or incomplete pairing | Forget the Bluetooth device, then pair in Galaxy Wearable |
| Galaxy Wearable shows “Start” | No active app-level connection | Tap Start and follow setup |
| “Disconnected from watch” | Nearby Bluetooth link is unavailable | Keep devices close, restart, and reconnect |
| “Remotely connected to watch” | Communication is occurring through a remote connection rather than nearby Bluetooth | Check the watch’s network and normal Bluetooth setup |
| Watch connects but notifications or Samsung Health fail | Permissions, background limits, software, or app sync | Check permissions, battery settings, and updates |
| Bluetooth works but LTE does not | Carrier plan, QR code, SIM, or account activation | Troubleshoot mobile service separately |
Bluetooth pairing is not the whole setup. Samsung says Galaxy Wearable manages the connection and is needed for functions such as Samsung Health synchronization (Samsung’s connection and syncing guidance).
Check phone and watch compatibility first
No reset can make an unsupported combination work. Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS models require a compatible Android phone and are not compatible with iPhone. Older Gear, Tizen, and Galaxy Fit products have different requirements, so check the exact model in Samsung’s phone-compatibility guide.
- Android version, RAM, Google Mobile Services, region, model, and carrier requirements vary by generation.
- Non-Samsung Android phones may support basic pairing while limiting Samsung-specific features.
- Samsung Pay and some other functions can depend on using a Samsung phone.
- LTE watches additionally need a supported carrier and wearable data plan.
If you use a Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch8, Watch8 Classic, or Galaxy Watch Ultra with an iPhone, the pairing is unsupported. Some older Samsung wearables had different iPhone support, so identify the model rather than applying a rule to every Samsung watch. Samsung’s Wear OS setup guide lists current Android requirements.

Try the low-risk checks
- Charge the watch and confirm that it powers on.
- Turn off Airplane mode on both devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices.
- Keep the phone and watch nearby. Samsung uses about 30 feet as practical Bluetooth guidance, but walls and interference can shorten that distance (Samsung troubleshooting).
- Temporarily disable battery-saving modes that restrict Galaxy Wearable.
- Ensure the phone has internet access for app, plugin, and software downloads.
- Move other watches and phones away from the pairing process, and check that this watch is not still connected to another phone.
Restart both devices
Restart the phone
Use the phone’s normal power menu and choose Restart. The controls differ between Android manufacturers.
Force-restart most Galaxy Watches
- Press and hold the watch’s Home/Power and Back buttons together.
- Keep holding until Rebooting… appears; Samsung says some models can take about 30 seconds.
- Release the buttons and wait for startup to finish.
Do not stop when a normal power menu appears. Older Gear models and Galaxy Fit products use different controls; consult the model manual if this method does not produce the reboot message (Samsung’s restart instructions).
Forget the old pairing and reconnect through Galaxy Wearable
A watch can remain visible in Bluetooth while its pairing record is corrupted. On many Android phones:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections or Connected devices, then Bluetooth.
- Tap the gear or settings icon beside the Galaxy Watch.
- Choose Unpair, Forget, or Forget device.
- Open Galaxy Wearable; do not pair only from the Bluetooth screen.
- Tap Start, Add new device, or the relevant watch option.
- Select the watch, verify that the code on the phone matches the watch, accept permissions, and leave the app open until setup completes.
Menu labels vary by phone, app version, and watch generation. Pairing inside Galaxy Wearable installs or invokes the required plugin and completes configuration; a Bluetooth-only connection can leave the watch apparently connected but unusable in the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the watch is still missing, toggle Bluetooth, restart again, move away from other Bluetooth devices, and check whether the watch must be reset before transfer from an old phone.
Update the app, plugin, phone, and watch
- Update Galaxy Wearable in the phone’s app store.
- Install updates for the watch plugin or related Samsung wearable components when prompted.
- Install available phone software updates.
- After reconnection, open Galaxy Wearable and look for Settings → About watch or About band → Update watch software (older Gear products may show About Gear → Update Gear software).
- Choose Update now or Download updates manually.
The watch generally needs a network connection. It can temporarily disconnect during an update, so do not interrupt the process solely because Bluetooth disappears (Samsung update guidance).

Stop repeated disconnections and failed syncing
Review permissions
Use Settings → Apps → Galaxy Wearable → Permissions. Check Nearby devices/Bluetooth access and any location permission requested during discovery. For notification problems, also review Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, and the watch plugin’s notification permissions.
Allow background operation
Use Settings → Apps → Galaxy Wearable → Battery → Allow background usage, or the equivalent on your phone. Remove Galaxy Wearable and its plugin from sleeping-app lists, aggressive battery optimization, and restricted background-data lists.
Restart the app before clearing data
- Open Settings → Apps → Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Force stop, then reopen the app.
- If it still freezes or loops, use Storage to clear cache.
- Clear app data only as a later step; this removes local setup information and can require sign-in and configuration again.
These checks address the permission and syncing failures Samsung describes in its content-sync guidance and its app-crash guidance.

Reset the watch only after backing it up
A reset erases local watch settings and may require app installation, account sign-in, and LTE activation again. Back up available data in Galaxy Wearable first. Samsung warns that data can be lost (reset and backup guidance).
- Forget the watch in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- On many current Galaxy Watches, open Settings → General → Reset and confirm.
- For many Galaxy Fit models, use About band → Reset band; older Gear models may use Gear info → Reset Gear.
- After restart, open Galaxy Wearable and pair again.
- Install updates before restoring apps and settings.
Reset menus and button combinations differ across Wear OS, Tizen, Gear, and Fit generations. Samsung’s model-specific reset information should take precedence.
Moving the watch to a new phone
- While the old phone still works, back up the watch.
- Remove the old Bluetooth pairing if possible.
- Install Galaxy Wearable on the new phone and begin setup there.
- Expect that connecting to a new phone can reset the watch; restore data and reinstall apps afterward.
- Recheck LTE activation, especially if the watch used a carrier QR code.
Samsung documents the reset and mobile-service implications of changing phones in its new-phone connection guide.

When Bluetooth works but LTE does not
LTE is a separate service layer. A watch can pair perfectly over Bluetooth while cellular service remains inactive. Check whether:
- Your phone and watch are supported by the carrier.
- A compatible wearable data plan is active and the account is in good standing.
- The watch’s mobile service was canceled or suspended.
- A new QR code is required after changing phones.
- Number sharing, SIM, or network-profile activation has completed.
Contact the carrier for plan, account, SIM, NumberShare, or QR-code problems. Resetting the watch cannot fix an unsupported plan.
When to contact Samsung or replace the watch
Escalate to Samsung Support when the watch cannot reboot, has liquid or physical damage, repeatedly crashes after updates, or still fails after a clean unpair-and-reset setup. Contact the carrier for LTE activation failures.
Replacement is reasonable only when the model is incompatible with your phone, hardware is damaged or obsolete, or repair is disproportionate to its value. Samsung’s current products include the Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch Ultra; prices and availability change, and buying a newer watch is not a remedy for an ordinary stale Bluetooth record or permission problem.
