A modest, consistent drop in Oura steps can be an intentional change: Oura’s April 2025 “Real Steps” update was designed to reject hand movements such as typing and count walking-like patterns instead. Oura said some members could see changes of approximately 20%. But a dramatic decrease—especially on a treadmill, while pushing a stroller or cart, or when your arm is restrained—can be genuine undercounting rather than improved accuracy.
What changed in Oura’s step counting?
Oura’s earlier approach could interpret broad hand movement as steps. The revised system looks for motion patterns more characteristic of walking, using the ring’s three-dimensional accelerometer and short activity windows. Oura describes this as recognizing “Real Steps,” rather than treating every movement as a step. The company’s April 2025 activity-tracking announcement said some users might see step-count changes of approximately 20%: Oura community announcement.
This is a design goal, not proof that every lower number is more accurate. Oura also acknowledged significant undercounting for some walking speeds and treadmill sessions, and its Known Issues page continued to list step-count accuracy reports as of August 16, 2026: Oura Known Issues.
Why fewer steps can be better
Less incidental movement in the total
Typing, gesturing, fidgeting, cooking and other hand activity can resemble walking to a finger-worn sensor. Filtering those movements can lower the displayed total while making it more representative of actual walking.

A more useful personal trend
Wearables use different sensors and classification rules, so Oura, an Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin and a phone will not necessarily agree. Oura recommends using one device consistently for longitudinal comparisons: How Oura Measures Steps & Activity. A stable baseline within Oura is more useful than chasing another device’s absolute number.
Steps are only one part of activity
Oura’s Activity Score also considers movement intensity, active calories, inactivity and other activity measures. Yoga, strength training, cycling, housework and similar activities can contribute to activity without producing many literal steps. See Oura’s Activity Score explanation.
When a lower count may be an undercount
The ring detects movement at your finger, so its result depends partly on how freely that hand moves. These situations can produce fewer captured steps even when your body is walking:

- Holding a treadmill handrail.
- Walking on a treadmill or walking pad while typing or resting your hand on a desk.
- Pushing a stroller, shopping cart or lawn mower.
- Walking with your hands in your pockets.
- Carrying a bag, child, pet leash or another object.
- Holding another person’s hand.
- Walking unusually slowly or at a pace outside the model’s strongest detection range.
- Wearing gloves or equipment that restricts finger movement.
- Wearing the ring incorrectly, removing it during the walk or using the wrong orientation for your generation.
Non-step exercise is a separate issue: cycling, rowing, elliptical training and resistance workouts may be strenuous without generating a step count.

How large a drop is potentially normal?
| Pattern | More likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Small, steady decrease on ordinary days | Recalibration and fewer false-positive steps | Compare several weeks using Oura’s own trend |
| Up to approximately 20% after the April 2025 change | Within the range Oura said some members could experience | Check whether normal outdoor walks remain plausible |
| 40–50% decrease, near-halving on a treadmill, or missing a known walk | Possible undercounting or a context-specific limitation | Run the repeatable test below and check Known Issues |
| Difference appears only in Apple Health | Source priority, aggregation or duplicate records | Audit Health permissions and contributing devices |
These are decision guides, not guarantees. Oura’s approximately 20% figure is a stated possible change, not a universal normal range.
Steps, Activity Time and Walking Equivalency are different metrics
A lower literal step total does not necessarily mean lower overall activity. Oura can report activity time, workouts, active calories and broader movement separately.

Walking Equivalency is not mileage
Walking Equivalency estimates how much walking would produce an equivalent calorie expenditure across step-based and non-step activities. Higher-intensity exercise can increase it without adding a proportional number of steps. It should not be used as proof that the pedometer is correct.
The 2025 metric change
Beginning May 21, 2025, Oura replaced Walking Equivalency with Activity Time for Gen3 and newer members. The change was not applied retroactively to older trends, and Gen2 users continued to see Walking Equivalency. Details are in Oura’s measurement documentation.

- Compare several ordinary days. Avoid judging the change from one unusual day.
- Note the timing. Record whether the decrease began after an app or firmware update.
- Walk a known outdoor route. Use a normal pace and let the ring hand swing naturally.
- Test the treadmill separately. Record whether you held a rail, typed, pushed a desk or otherwise restrained the arm.
- Check fit and orientation. Follow the instructions for your exact Oura generation; Oura generally places sensor bumps on the palm side for activity tracking.
- Confirm wear time. The ring cannot create activity data for periods when it was off your finger.
- Inspect other metrics. Check recorded walks, Activity Time, active calories, heart-rate response, workouts and goal progress.
- Install available updates. Update the Oura app and ring software, without assuming a particular version is current.
- Review the live Known Issues page. Status can vary by ring generation, firmware, app version and date.
- Contact Oura support. Provide dates, ring generation, app version, walking context and repeatable comparison results if the discrepancy persists.
Fixes, imports and Apple Health checks
Improve the measurement conditions
Let the ring hand move freely when practical, wear the ring in the recommended orientation and avoid treating a constrained-arm walk as a fair test of a finger-based pedometer.

Add the activity you know occurred
Oura lets you edit or manually add activities: Edit or Manually Add an Activity. This can improve workout, activity and calorie accounting, but it does not guarantee reconstruction of every missing literal step. Activities can also be imported through Apple Health on iOS or Health Connect on Android.
Audit Apple Health sources
Apple Health may combine iPhone, Apple Watch, Oura and other wearable records. A raw device total and a deduplicated Health total are not necessarily comparable. On iPhone, Oura documents this path for stopping it from writing steps: Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Oura → turn off “Steps.” Apple can change labels and menus, so verify the current interface in your version of iOS. See Oura’s Apple Health Integration guide.

Plausibility
Validate against a known route with free arm movement, not a treadmill desk session or a vague impression of your daily activity. Avoid using “2,000 steps per mile” as a hard rule; stride length varies with height, pace, terrain and gait.
Consequences
Investigate more aggressively when the decrease also makes Activity Score, activity goals, active calories, workout detection or weekly trends implausible. If only literal steps changed while those measures remain reasonable, the difference may be primarily definitional.
When another tracker may suit you better
Oura remains a strong fit if sleep, recovery, readiness and discreet, screen-free wear matter more than maximizing step precision in constrained-arm situations. If steps and workouts are the priority, consider a device worn on a moving body part or a platform that matches your routine:
- Apple Watch for wrist-based activity, workouts, GPS and Apple ecosystem integration.
- Garmin watches for structured training, GPS and sports metrics.
- Fitbit for an activity-tracker-centered experience.
- Samsung Galaxy Ring for compatible Android and Samsung users.
- Ultrahuman Ring AIR for readers comparing smart rings and membership policies.
No device is universally most accurate. Treadmill-desk users, stroller and cart pushers, and people who routinely carry objects should choose the sensor placement that moves naturally during their real activity.
The bottom line
A modest, stable decrease may mean Oura is filtering out typing, gestures and other non-step hand motion, making its personal trend more meaningful. A large or context-specific drop—particularly during treadmill or restrained-arm walking—can be an undercounting problem. Test a natural outdoor walk, separate literal steps from broader activity metrics, check software and Known Issues, and contact Oura when the discrepancy is repeatable and implausible.
