The Withings BPM Core combines an upper-arm blood-pressure monitor, a single-channel ECG and a digital stethoscope in one device. Its blood-pressure function has peer-reviewed validation, but the ECG and heart-sound features are screening tools—not a home cardiology check-up. It may suit people who want all three readings together in a market where it is approved and available; U.S. buyers should verify its regulatory status and sale availability before ordering.
What the BPM Core measures
Withings describes the complete measurement as taking about 90 seconds. The device is designed for the left upper arm and combines three distinct functions. Withings’ overview and product guide explain the setup and intended readings.
| Function | What it provides | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Blood pressure | Systolic and diastolic readings and pulse. | A complete assessment of cardiovascular health or risk. |
| ECG | A single-channel recording that can be classified as possible atrial fibrillation (AFib) or sinus rhythm. | A 12-lead ECG, a diagnosis of every rhythm problem, or proof that the heart is healthy. |
| Digital stethoscope | A heart-sound recording analyzed for possible signs of some valvular heart diseases. | A definitive valve diagnosis or an echocardiogram. |
The ECG uses two electrodes inside the cuff and a third on the metal tube, which the user touches with a hand. For the heart-sound stage, the stethoscope sensor on the cuff must remain against the chest. These are screening and tracking functions: the device does not image the heart or arteries, evaluate chest pain, or replace an examination by a clinician.
How trustworthy are the readings?
Blood pressure: the best-supported function
A peer-reviewed validation study found that BPM Core met the requirements of ISO 81060-2:2018/AMD 1:2020 for systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The study involved adults with arm circumferences of 22–42 cm and compared the device with reference measurements taken by trained observers using the Korotkoff method. That supports the blood-pressure function under the tested protocol; it is not a guarantee that every reading in everyday use will be accurate. Read the validation study.

Withings support pages publish different mean-error figures for clinical information, so they should not be combined into one supposedly definitive accuracy number. The peer-reviewed validation is the clearer basis for judging the blood-pressure function. One manufacturer clinical-validation page and a later clinical-information page report different figures.
Position and preparation still matter. Talking, moving, an unsupported arm or back, crossed legs, a cuff at the wrong height, poor cuff fit, or taking a measurement just after exertion, caffeine, nicotine or stress can undermine a reading. Withings’ positioning instructions also warn that noise and poor sensor contact can affect the other recordings.

ECG: useful rhythm screening, not a full ECG
The single-channel ECG can flag a recording as possible AFib or sinus rhythm. That can be useful information to share with a clinician, but a single lead contains much less information than a clinical 12-lead ECG. An inconclusive reading does not diagnose a problem, and a normal classification cannot rule out all arrhythmias or other heart conditions. Symptoms should take precedence over a reassuring result.
Heart sounds: the most distinctive feature, with important limits
The digital stethoscope records about 20 seconds of heart sounds and analyzes patterns associated with possible valvular heart disease. Its result is a risk indication, not a diagnosis; suspected valve disease requires clinical assessment and may require Doppler echocardiography. The device cannot let a user independently interpret the recording as a cardiologist would.

Heart-sound results are initially withheld until five successful measurements have been completed. Withings says the qualification process must be repeated if ECG and heart-sound recordings have not been made for six months. Noise, movement, poor placement, inadequate contact or an inconclusive ECG can also prevent the sound from being classified. An inconclusive result means neither “normal” nor “diseased.” Withings explains the stethoscope function and its limitations.
How to take a measurement
- Prepare: Sit quietly for five minutes. Keep your feet flat and legs uncrossed, and support your back and arm.
- Fit the cuff: Wrap it around your left upper arm. Keep the device at heart level, with the stethoscope against the rib cage, the metal tube pointing down and about one inch above the elbow.
- Start: Press the device button, then press it again to begin. Stay still and do not speak during the reading.
- Record ECG and heart sounds: After the blood-pressure stage, follow the repositioning prompts. Put your right hand on the metal tube while keeping the stethoscope in contact with your chest.
- Confirm the profile: Select the correct user and confirm, so the result is associated with the right person.
The device offers a “Start x3” option for three blood-pressure measurements in sequence followed by ECG and stethoscope recording. An “ECG” option records ECG and heart sounds without the normal blood-pressure sequence. Withings also documents an optional Heart Sound Measurement Assistance Mode introduced in firmware release 841. See its measurement and positioning guidance.

A blood-pressure reading can succeed even if the ECG or heart-sound recording does not. Withings says that if the right hand is not placed on the metal tube, only the blood-pressure result will appear. Check that the stethoscope remains on the chest and that the hand is in contact with the electrode rather than assuming that one successful result means the others worked.
Regulatory status and availability depend on country
Withings says BPM Core has CE medical clearance in Europe, while its support material says FDA clearance was still under review. The U.S. product page shows a listed price of $249.95, observed August 18, 2026, alongside “Keep me informed.” That is not clear evidence of ordinary U.S. retail availability. Check the live product page and applicable local status before buying: Withings’ FAQ and U.S. product page.

Do not infer BPM Core clearance from FDA records for other Withings products. The FDA record for the Withings ECG App relates to use with ScanWatch, not BPM Core; a record for an older Withings blood-pressure device is likewise not evidence for this combined product. ECG App record · older blood-pressure device record.
Regulatory status and retail availability are separate questions. If you live outside the European market where Withings says it is cleared, verify the device’s local authorization, support and return options rather than treating an import or a product listing as proof of approval.

The Withings app is required for initial setup and the first measurement. After setup, Withings says you can take measurements without opening the app; the device has a display, and Wi-Fi can synchronize results without the phone nearby. Bluetooth supports short-range phone synchronization. The app remains important for stored trends and sharing results, so check current app support and available export options if your clinician needs a particular format or platform.

Quick Recap
Safety and reasons to choose another device
- Implanted electrical devices: Withings specifically recommends not using BPM Core if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator or another electrical implant, because the ECG function sends a small electrical current through the body. Ask your clinician about an appropriate alternative. Withings’ implanted-device guidance.
- Symptoms: Do not use a normal or inconclusive device result to assess chest pain, shortness of breath or palpitations. Withings directs users with concerning heart-sound results or symptoms such as these to consult a doctor. Seek urgent care for symptoms that may be an emergency; the BPM Core is not an emergency assessment tool. Withings’ stethoscope FAQ.
- Fit and stillness: Its validated arm range is 22–42 cm. If the cuff does not fit, you cannot hold the required position, or movement makes the recordings unreliable, choose a monitor suited to you.
- Clinical expectations: Avoid it if you expect a 12-lead ECG, valve imaging, a cardiologist’s examination or a definitive diagnosis from a home reading.
Alternatives by need
| Option | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Independently validated upper-arm blood-pressure monitor | People who mainly need home hypertension readings or a log for their clinician. | Usually simpler and less expensive, but has no integrated ECG or heart-sound screening. Prefer an upper-arm model with independent validation and the right cuff range; use a wrist model only if advised. |
| Omron Complete Wireless Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor + ECG | People seeking a combined blood-pressure and ECG device, particularly in the U.S. if local clearance and availability are confirmed. | It does not offer BPM Core’s digital-stethoscope feature. Compare ECG type, cuff range, validation, app requirements and clinician-review options. Omron’s official site. |
| AliveCor KardiaMobile 6L plus a separate BP cuff | People whose priority is a portable, multi-lead ECG and who are comfortable using two devices. | The FDA record describes one- and two-channel ECG recordings, with derived leads in two-channel mode, and classifications including normal sinus rhythm, AFib, bradycardia, tachycardia or unclassified. It does not measure blood pressure or provide integrated heart-sound screening. FDA record · AliveCor. |
| Withings BPM Connect | People who want connected blood-pressure tracking in the Withings ecosystem without the extra cardiac screening functions. | It does not provide BPM Core’s ECG or digital-stethoscope features. Withings blood-pressure product family. |
Who should buy the BPM Core?
Consider it if
- It is officially available and medically cleared where you live.
- You have a reason to track blood pressure and also value possible-AFib and heart-sound screening in one device.
- Your arm fits the cuff, you can follow the positioning instructions, and you understand that screening results need medical interpretation when concerning.
- You want Wi-Fi synchronization and are comfortable using the Withings app for setup and ongoing data management.
Choose something else if
- Your main need is routine blood-pressure tracking: a simpler, independently validated upper-arm monitor is likely the more proportionate choice.
- You want richer ECG information: consider a dedicated multi-lead device alongside a separate blood-pressure monitor.
- You need emergency reassurance, a full cardiac examination or a definitive diagnosis.
- You have an implanted electrical device, or the cuff and recording position are not practical for you.
