Apple Watch Series 10, Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra, and Google’s Pixel Watch 3 improved mature products. The more consequential stories came elsewhere: smart rings became a credible category, Ray-Ban Meta made AI wearables practical, health monitoring moved closer to regulated use, and Apple Vision Pro exposed both the promise and limits of spatial computing.
The result was a more fragmented wearable market—and a strategically more important one. The biggest launch was not necessarily the product most people bought; it was the form factor or business model that changed what manufacturers will build next.
The smartwatch plateau
Smartwatches remained the most capable general-purpose wearables. Apple Watch Series 10 brought a thinner design, a larger display and new health functions including sleep-apnea detection, while the continuing blood-oxygen patent dispute complicated the product story in the United States. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 added health and fitness functions, Samsung Health and Galaxy AI integration; its sleep-apnea feature also highlighted the importance of regulatory boundaries. The Galaxy Watch Ultra extended Samsung into the rugged premium segment, closely matching Apple’s outdoor-watch positioning.
Google’s larger Pixel Watch 3 helped make Wear OS and Fitbit feel like a coherent Google hardware ecosystem. Garmin, Fitbit, Huawei and Amazfit remained important because many buyers value training depth, battery life or specialist outdoor tools more than a broad app store. Coverage that frames wearables as only an Apple-versus-Samsung contest misses these distinct priorities.

These were useful refinements, not a reinvention. The category’s major development was ecosystem consolidation: phones, watches, health platforms and emergency services worked together more convincingly. TechRadar’s 2024 roundup and Wareable’s 2024 archive document that incremental character.
Smart rings became a real category
Smart rings were 2024’s most important hardware shift. They are light, discreet and generally easier to wear overnight than a watch, making them well suited to passive sleep and recovery tracking. They are not watch replacements: rings normally lack a display, GPS, calls, payments, apps and immediate workout controls.
Oura Ring 4
Oura Ring 4 redesigned its sensors with a recessed layout and emphasized sleep, readiness and women’s health. Contemporary coverage reported up to eight days of battery life and a U.S. launch price of $349; that price was for 2024 and does not include any applicable membership. Oura’s strength was its mature interpretation layer, but the full software experience continued to depend on a subscription.
Samsung Galaxy Ring
Samsung’s first major ring launch connected directly to Samsung Health and Galaxy devices. It was positioned as a companion to a Galaxy Watch rather than a replacement, and its subscription-free-at-launch approach was a significant commercial counterpoint to Oura. Contemporary reports placed it around $399 in the United States; buyers should verify current pricing, phone requirements and regional features.
RingConn and Ultrahuman
RingConn Gen 2 and Ultrahuman Ring AIR made the category’s subscription debate unavoidable. Their subscription-free positioning and lower-cost emphasis challenged Oura’s premium model, although software maturity, research depth, sizing support and app quality can differ. Battery claims also vary with ring size, temperature and usage.
| Ring | Best fit | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oura Ring 4 | Sleep, recovery and wellness interpretation | Mature app and analysis | Membership cost |
| Samsung Galaxy Ring | Samsung ecosystem users | Galaxy integration; no required subscription at launch | Most valuable inside Samsung’s ecosystem |
| RingConn Gen 2 and similar rivals | Subscription-averse buyers | Value-oriented positioning | Less established software and research profile |
Fit remains decisive. Finger swelling, scratches, charging, sizing mistakes and limited standalone functionality can matter more than sensor counts. Ray-Ban Meta made AI wearable technology practical
Ray-Ban Meta glasses combined ordinary-looking eyewear with cameras, microphones, open-ear speakers and voice interaction. Users could capture photos and video hands-free, ask Meta AI questions and use visual assistance. The product’s insight was to avoid inventing a new screen or daily ritual. Familiar glasses delivered useful audio, capture and AI functions.
That convenience has costs: privacy concerns around cameras and microphones, dependence on a phone, companion app, internet connection and cloud AI, and limited battery life. They are not augmented-reality glasses; no full digital interface is projected into the wearer’s field of view. Axios reported a U.S. starting price of $299 in late 2024, a historical price that should not be treated as current. Wareable and Axios covered the launch-era positioning.
Orion clarified what “AI glasses” means
Meta’s Orion prototype, shown in September 2024, offered a glimpse of genuine AR: digital content overlaid and anchored to the physical world. It was a technology demonstration, not a normal retail product. Keep three categories separate:
- AI glasses: cameras, microphones, speakers and voice assistance.
- Display glasses: a private screen for notifications or media.
- True AR glasses: digital objects anchored in the environment.
IEEE Spectrum placed Orion and Vision Pro in the broader spatial-computing story.
Apple Vision Pro: astonishing, expensive and difficult
Apple Vision Pro launched in the United States in February 2024 with high-resolution displays, advanced eye- and hand-tracking, spatial video and immersive applications. It was a mixed-reality headset and personal spatial computer, not a conventional fitness wearable.
Its limitations were physical and commercial: high price, weight, a battery tether, comfort concerns and a still-developing application ecosystem. The fairest verdict is that Vision Pro was a remarkable technology showcase whose burden and cost prevented mass-market adoption in 2024—not that it was simply a failure. Ray-Ban Meta pursued the opposite strategy: minimal interface and familiar form factor rather than maximum immersion. TechRadar, IEEE Spectrum and an early healthcare analysis at arXiv provide context.

Wearables moved closer to medicine
Apple and Samsung introduced sleep-apnea detection features in 2024. Regulatory clearance applies to a particular feature, device, software version and geography; it does not make the entire watch a diagnostic device. These features identify signs or risk patterns that may justify medical attention, not replace a clinical sleep study or physician diagnosis. Availability can depend on country, age, model, software and permissions. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine called the development notable.
ECG, irregular-rhythm alerts, fall detection, emergency calling and blood-oxygen sensing continued to expand. The Apple-Masimo dispute showed that even an important sensor can be unavailable or disabled in a market. Blood-pressure estimation and continuous glucose monitoring remain distinct from ordinary smartwatch wellness features. Wearables are increasingly useful for screening, trend detection, behavior change and research, but a wellness metric is not automatically a diagnosis. A review in Annual Reviews emphasizes both low-cost physiological measurement and the need for validation.
The failed promise of dedicated AI gadgets
Humane AI Pin and similar screenless devices tested the idea that people wanted a phone replacement built around voice and cloud AI. The 2024 lesson was not that screenless hardware is impossible; it was that an AI wearable needs a compelling physical reason to exist. Glasses offered audio and camera utility while fitting an existing habit. A separate device added charging, a subscription, cloud dependence and a new interaction routine without an equally clear benefit.
Business models, privacy and trust
The ring competition was also a contest over recurring revenue. Oura used hardware plus membership; Samsung used ecosystem integration and no required subscription at launch; lower-priced rivals used hardware adoption to challenge the incumbent. Interpretation software may ultimately be more valuable than the sensor itself.

Privacy is central, especially with ordinary-looking glasses. Buyers should ask where health and camera data are processed, what works offline, how long data is retained, whether it can be exported and how bystanders are informed. Health alerts can create anxiety and false positives; normal readings do not rule out disease. Do not change treatment based solely on consumer-wearable data.
What mattered most in 2024
- Smart rings became a serious, competitive category.
- Ray-Ban Meta showed a practical path for AI wearables.
- Sleep-apnea detection brought regulatory questions into mainstream products.
- Vision Pro advanced spatial computing while exposing its comfort and price constraints.
- Smartwatches became dependable, mature platforms rather than revolutionary new hardware.
For buyers, choose a smartwatch for notifications, GPS, apps, calls, payments and safety; a ring for discreet overnight wellness tracking; AI glasses for hands-free audio, capture and voice help; and a mixed-reality headset only for a specific immersive or spatial-computing use case. No consumer wearable substitutes for clinical evaluation.
