For a watch, that difference does not by itself prove that one case is stronger, more scratch-resistant, easier to polish, or better overall. The right choice depends on the intended service and the properties that matter—not simply the grade number.
316L vs. 904L at a glance
| Comparison | 316L | 904L |
|---|---|---|
| Grade identity in cited Alleima datasheets | UNS S31603; EN 1.4404. The datasheet also identifies the 316 grade as S31600 and EN 1.4401. | UNS N08904; EN 1.4539. |
| Representative composition | Alleima’s cited billet datasheet lists carbon at no more than 0.030%, chromium at 16.5%, nickel at 11%, and molybdenum at 2.1%. | Outokumpu lists typical values of chromium 19.8%, nickel 24.2%, molybdenum 4.3%, and copper 1.40% for Ultra 904L. |
| Corrosion positioning | A broad-use industrial grade used where 304/304L does not provide sufficient corrosion resistance. | A higher-alloy option for some severe corrosion service, including certain acid and chloride-bearing environments. |
| Mechanical-property comparison | A matched comparison is not stated in the cited sources. Do not infer strength, hardness, or scratch resistance from these composition values. | |
| Price comparison | A directly comparable current purchase price is not stated in the cited sources. | |
The composition figures are manufacturer datasheet values, not a substitute for the limits in the applicable standard or the certificate for a particular product. Alleima’s datasheets were updated 2025-05-09; Outokumpu’s product-range information was accessed 2026-10-04. Check the exact grade, product form, standard and specification when buying or specifying material.
Why 904L is different
Both grades are austenitic stainless steels, but the cited manufacturer data show substantially more nickel and molybdenum in 904L, as well as copper in its typical composition. That more highly alloyed chemistry is part of why manufacturers position 904L for corrosive service beyond the range of standard 316L in some applications.
That is a service-specific advantage, not a promise that 904L resists every acid, chloride concentration, temperature or exposure condition. Alleima describes its 2RK65 904L product as having very good resistance in certain sulfuric, phosphoric and acetic acid environments, neutral chloride-bearing solutions, crevice corrosion relative to 304 and 316 types, and stress-corrosion cracking. These are manufacturer descriptions of a specified material, not a universal compatibility chart. See Alleima’s 2RK65 (904L) billet datasheet and Outokumpu’s Ultra range information.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What that means for a watch
904L’s corrosion reputation comes from industrial applications, not from a general finding that it makes a better watch case. Outokumpu lists uses for 904L such as chemical and petrochemical process equipment, desalination, seawater handling, hydrometallurgy, pharmaceuticals and heat exchangers. Those examples show the kinds of corrosive services for which the alloy may be considered; they do not establish that a watch wearer will notice a practical advantage over 316L in ordinary use.
For watch cases, the alloy designation alone does not settle questions such as scratch resistance, strength, hardness, finish quality or polishability. The cited sources do not provide a matched 316L-versus-904L comparison for those properties. Nor do they establish a general advantage for 904L in watchmaking. A brand’s choice may be relevant, but judge the finished watch on its full specification and intended use rather than treating the steel grade as a standalone quality score.

How to choose or specify between them
For a real component or industrial application, select the grade against the actual service conditions. If the question is about a watch purchase, look for substantiated case-material details and other product specifications; do not assume 904L is automatically better for the wearer.
- Define the environment. Identify the chemical or exposure medium, its concentration, operating temperature, chloride level and duration of contact.
- Check the failure conditions. Consider crevices, deposits, applied stress, joints and other geometry or operating conditions that may affect corrosion.
- Confirm the exact material. Specify the governing standard, grade and product form; verify the material certificate rather than relying only on a broad label.
- Review fabrication needs. Account for the manufacturing process and welding requirements. Alleima describes its 904L product as having good weldability, but that is not a replacement for procedure-specific review.
- Compare lifecycle cost. Weigh the cost of the material and fabrication against the consequences of corrosion, maintenance or replacement. A price premium cannot be quantified from the cited sources.
The Nickel Institute’s stainless-steel selection guide places 316/316L and 904L at different approximate corrosion-resistance levels. It is a general selection aid, not a universal ranking across every environment; use service-specific engineering review where failure would matter.

Frequently confused claims
- “904L is always better.” No. Its corrosion benefits depend on the medium and conditions; 316L remains a broad-use grade.
- “904L is necessarily stronger or more scratch-resistant.” The cited sources do not establish a matched mechanical or scratch-resistance comparison.
- “316L is immune to corrosion.” No. It is used where 304/304L is not sufficiently corrosion-resistant, but that does not make it suitable for every marine or chemical exposure.
- “The grade tells you everything about a watch case.” No. A grade name does not establish the finished case’s surface treatment, dimensions, manufacturing quality or real-world performance.
