Hamilton says its film history began with Shanghai Express in 1932 and that its watches have appeared in more than 500 movies and television productions. That total is the company’s own claim, not an independently audited count.
Why Hamilton watches keep appearing in films
A watch can make a character feel anchored to a period, signal a profession or personality, or carry a story point that dialogue alone cannot. Hamilton’s screen history includes all of those roles. Its long association with film productions also gives filmmakers access to a recognizable watchmaker when an existing model fits—or when a prop needs to be designed around the story.
“Cameo” is useful shorthand for a recognizable watch on screen, but it does not describe one uniform arrangement. A production may select an existing Hamilton model as a costume detail, use a brand-linked watch for a character, or commission a bespoke prop that is not itself a retail product. The screen object and any later commercial watch inspired by it should not be assumed to be identical.

The Ventura: Hamilton’s clearest franchise watch
From the 1997 original to International
The Ventura is the most straightforward example of an existing, recognizable Hamilton model linked to a continuing film series. Hamilton connects it with the Men in Black franchise from the first movie in 1997 through Men in Black: International in 2019. In the original, the watch is associated with Agents J and K; in International, with Agent M.

For someone looking for a film-linked Hamilton to wear, the Ventura is a defensible choice because its screen association is part of the franchise’s visual identity. The company’s film-history pages establish the franchise connection, but the precise reference and size of any Ventura variant should be checked against the specific watch being considered rather than inferred from the film association.
The Murph: a plot prop that became a retail watch
How the watch works in Interstellar
In Interstellar (2014), the Murph is more than costume. Its Morse-code message and role in the story make it a communication device and an emotional link between Joseph Cooper and his daughter, Murphy. Hamilton describes the screen watch as designed and created especially for the film and says the concept drew on a Khaki Field model.

What became available to buyers
Hamilton says it translated the film concept into a retail Khaki Field Murph in 2019, in a 42 mm size, then released a 38 mm version in 2022. Those are commercial models inspired by the prop; the film’s custom watch and the watches sold to consumers are related, but they should not be conflated as the same object.
When a film watch is engineered for the story
TENET’s countdown display
Hamilton says it collaborated with the TENET design team on a custom watch built around the Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO display. The countdown display was a plot requirement, so the result was a prop-engineering project rather than simply a character wearing an off-the-shelf model. Hamilton reports 18 months of preparation, including technical development, testing and production at a Swatch Group laboratory in Switzerland.

Other bespoke work
The work for 2001: A Space Odyssey is another example of Hamilton designing watches and clocks specifically for a film when existing products did not suit the need. Interstellar likewise used a custom Murph prop as part of its plot. These cases show why a screen appearance does not necessarily point to a watch that a reader can buy as shown.
