An ETA/Peseux 7001 can be more than a familiar hand-wound movement hidden behind a dial. Watchmakers and brands have used its architecture as a starting point for open bridges, hand engraving, frosting and other visible craft. Those changes can make a display back more compelling, but decoration alone is not evidence of better timekeeping.
What the ETA/Peseux 7001 is—and what the figures mean
The 7001 is a hand-wound movement whose origin is reported as 1971, when it was created by Fabrique d’ebauches de Peseux, S.A. Time+Tide reports that ETA acquired Peseux in 1985. The same 2022 article gives the 7001 a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and approximately 42 hours of power reserve. These are publication-reported specifications, not figures independently verified here against an official ETA technical sheet.
“Off the shelf” is useful shorthand for a familiar base calibre, not a description of every watchmaker’s work on it. A movement may preserve much of its underlying architecture while receiving substantially different visible parts. Ming’s 27.01, for example, retains only the gear train and escapement according to the brand description quoted by Time+Tide; other makers have treated the 7001 more as a platform for crafted bridges and components.
Four ways makers have transformed the 7001
Ming 27.01: a redesigned display
Time+Tide reports that Ming worked with Manufacture Schwarz Etienne to redesign the 7001 as the 7001.M1. The brand’s product description, reproduced by Time+Tide, says: “The 27.01 is powered by a movement so heavily reworked that we probably should have started from scratch. We begin with an ETA Peseux 7001 and retain only the gear train and escapement. The bridges and plates are remade, courtesy of Manufacture Schwarz Etienne, in a configuration of our design, retaining the same aesthetic as the 19-series: solid baseplate with maximal opening of upper bridges to put the moving components on display. It is a continuation of our belief that a display back must have something worth seeing behind it.”

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Professional Watches independently describes black chrome-plated replacement bridges and plates. The example shows how a recognisable base architecture can remain even as much of the visible structure is replaced and opened up. The quotation is Ming’s account of its design, not an independent technical assessment.
Felipe Pikullik: hand-worked bridges
Time+Tide describes commissioned 7001 examples by Felipe Pikullik with hand-engraved and hand-chamfered bridges. Here the visual distinction comes from detailed work on the bridge surfaces and edges rather than from a claim that the underlying movement has become more accurate.

Minhoon Yoo’s “Carved Piece”: crafted components
For “Carved Piece,” Time+Tide says Minhoon Yoo borrowed the 7001 architecture, made bridges from nickeled silver, designed a click-spring, and used hand-finished anglage and black polishing. The treatment combines new component design with finishing work, so it is not simply a stock movement given a decorative surface treatment.
Holthinrichs HW-RO1: contrast through raised edges
Time+Tide describes the Holthinrichs HW-RO1 as using frosted bridges with raised, chamfered edges, and reports elaborated decoration of the 7001 base. Frosting and the brighter edges create contrast that can be appreciated through the display back; the cited account does not establish a resulting change in timekeeping.

Furlan Marri Disco Volante: several finishes on a slim hand-wound calibre
Revolution Watch describes the Furlan Marri Disco Volante’s ETA/Peseux 7001 as thin and hand-wound, with Côtes de Genève, anglage and black polishing. Its listed display-back details include hours, minutes and small seconds, plus a 42-hour reserve. Revolution Watch listed the watch at $2,780 when its page was published; that is historical pricing, not a current offer or statement of availability.
How to read the finishing terms
Finishing names describe what the surfaces look like and how they have been worked. StockX’s movement-finishing guide offers these useful visual cues:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Geneva striping (Côtes de Genève): orderly, wave-like rows across a surface.
- Perlage: overlapping circular patterns.
- Anglage: chamfered edges on plates and bridges. Polishing can make a chamfer reflective; a brushed surface instead shows a straight grain.
- Black polishing: a polished surface that can appear black from certain viewing angles, as described in the cited examples.
- Frosting: a textured surface treatment, which can contrast with brighter raised or chamfered edges, as on the HW-RO1.
A loupe can help reveal these small differences, and StockX notes that a trained eye using one may notice contrasts that are difficult to see unaided. It is an inspection aid, not a requirement for appreciating a watch.

Visual craft and mechanical performance are separate questions. StockX’s guide states that the finishing treatments it discusses have no effect on timekeeping and are technically unnecessary, while also noting that their aesthetic value is subjective. That distinction matters: an open bridge, hand engraving or polished edge tells you about appearance and workmanship, not by itself about a watch’s rate, reliability or serviceability.

A useful comparison is therefore about what changed and what you can see: whether the base architecture remains, whether bridges or plates were replaced or opened, and whether the finish is industrial decoration, hand work or part of a broader redesign. The caseback determines how much of that work is visible. None of those observations substitutes for specific performance data.
Do not confuse the 7001 with its D101 relative
The La Joux-Perret D101 is a related 7001-derived movement, not another specification for the ETA/Peseux 7001. SJX Watches reported in 2026 that the D101 used in Mermont La Parfaite has a 50-hour reserve and a stated tolerance of ±7 seconds per day in three positions. SJX also reports Mermont’s claim that its example is individually adjusted to within three seconds per day on average. Those figures apply to the D101 and the particular claims described by SJX; they should not be carried over to every 7001.
