Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →LumiWatch is a wrist-worn research prototype that projects a touch-capable interface onto the wearer’s forearm. A depth-sensing array tracks finger movements on the curved surface, letting users interact with projected graphics instead of being limited to a conventional watch’s small display. Researchers presented it in 2018; the cited project materials describe a demonstrated system, not a retail smartwatch.
What LumiWatch does
LumiWatch was designed to expand the interaction area available from a wrist-worn device. Its scanned-laser projector casts an interface onto the forearm, while sensors detect where a finger touches or moves across that projected area. The LumiWatch paper authors reported roughly 40 cm² of interactive surface—more than five times the area of a typical smartwatch display, according to the project team. That is a comparison to a typical display, not a claim that LumiWatch exceeds every watch or makes the whole projected area as easy to use as a phone screen.
The project was presented by researchers associated with Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute and ASU Tech. The CMU project page describes tap and swipe interactions; the Future Interfaces Group project page and the 2018 CHI paper explain the projection and sensing system.
How the projected touchscreen works
Projection onto the forearm
A 15-lumen scanned-laser projector casts graphics from the wrist unit onto the arm at a shallow angle, as reported by the Future Interfaces Group. Because a forearm is curved rather than flat, and the projection comes in at an angle, the system’s graphics pipeline rectifies the image to fit the arm’s non-planar surface.

Finger tracking and touch input
A ten-element time-of-flight depth-sensing array monitors finger position. The system uses those measurements for continuous two-dimensional tracking, supporting interaction with the projected graphics. LumiWatch therefore combines a projected display with a sensing system; projection alone would not turn the arm into an input surface.
Calibration and unlocking
The paper’s figure description identifies a rapid projection-calibration step before apps can be used. LumiWatch also uses swipe-to-unlock, intended to reduce accidental activation from incidental contact with the arm. These steps are part of the interaction design, rather than evidence that the surface behaves exactly like a flat glass touchscreen.

What the researchers reported about the prototype
The figures below are specifications and operating estimates reported for the research build in the Future Interfaces Group’s 2018 project description. They are not independent consumer-product tests.
| Attribute | Reported figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive area | Roughly 40 cm² | Reported by the LumiWatch paper authors; the CMU project page described it as more than five times a typical smartwatch display. |
| Projector | 15-lumen scanned-laser projector | Prototype specification reported by Future Interfaces Group. |
| Depth sensing | Ten-element time-of-flight array | Used to track finger position, according to Future Interfaces Group. |
| Dimensions | 50 × 41 × 17 mm | Reported prototype dimensions. The project page compared these with a 42 mm Apple Watch Series 3 measuring 43 × 36 × 11 mm. |
| Processor and software | Quad-core CPU; Android 5.1 | Prototype configuration reported by Future Interfaces Group. |
| Projector operation | One hour continuous, or one day of occasional use | Operating estimates reported for the prototype; the page distinguishes continuous projection from occasional use. |
The trade-offs behind a larger interaction area
The main benefit LumiWatch explored was additional space for projected graphics and touch input without relying solely on the watch’s fixed display. But the added area came with trade-offs. The prototype was physically larger than the cited 42 mm Apple Watch Series 3, required calibration, and had a reported projector runtime of one hour under continuous operation. “One day of occasional use” is a different usage pattern, not a one-day continuous projection claim.

Projected area also should not be treated as equivalent to usable screen area. The forearm is curved, the projection angle is shallow, and the interface depends on a sensing-and-calibration system. The cited project summaries do not provide enough detail to state specific LumiWatch touch-accuracy scores or visibility results, or to generalize performance across lighting conditions.
Is LumiWatch a smartwatch you can buy?
No retail LumiWatch, replacement part, or compatible accessory is established in the cited LumiWatch materials. They describe a custom research prototype and its technical demonstration, not a product currently offered to shoppers. A generic smartwatch or mini-projector is not documented as a substitute: the sources do not establish that either provides LumiWatch’s combination of arm projection and finger tracking.

How LumiWatch differs from SkinTrack
SkinTrack is related research on arm-based interaction, but it is a separate system. In a 2016 account, CMU described SkinTrack as using a ring that produces a high-frequency signal and electrodes in a watch strap to locate finger position on the hand and arm. It does not project LumiWatch’s interface and is not a LumiWatch accessory.
CMU reported 99% touch-detection accuracy and a mean touch-location error of 7.6 mm for SkinTrack. Those measurements belong to SkinTrack, not LumiWatch; they should not be used as LumiWatch performance figures. See CMU’s SkinTrack account.

Why LumiWatch matters as research
LumiWatch demonstrated a way to combine on-arm projected graphics with touch tracking in a self-contained wrist-worn research system. Its contribution is the integrated approach: projecting an interface onto a curved arm, correcting the graphics for that surface, and sensing finger movement there. The researchers described practical-adoption obstacles while presenting the build as a functional projection smartwatch system. That makes LumiWatch useful as an example of wearable-interface research, rather than a present-day shopping recommendation.
