Founded in Le Locle in 1889, the Swiss maker built a wider watchmaking business before the orange-dial SUB 300 made it famous among divers. After years away from the dive-watch scene, the SUB returned in 2002, according to enthusiast histories.
DOXA began as a Le Locle watchmaking business
Georges Ducommun began a watchmaking apprenticeship at age 12 in 1880. Nine years later, aged 21, he opened “Georges Ducommun, Fabriques DOXA” in Le Locle, Switzerland. That chronology comes from DOXA’s official history, a retrospective account by the company.
Long before DOXA became associated with dive watches, it made a range of timepieces. The company says its watches served not only as personal watches but also in the instrument panels of automobiles, ships and airplanes. After Ducommun died in 1936, his son-in-law Jacques Nardin took over. DOXA continued making travel and sport watches and developed products including alarm and ring watches.
Design and the orange SUB made DOXA distinctive
From the Grafic to the SUB 300
DOXA’s 1957 Grafic collection reflected minimalist, Bauhaus-inspired design. A decade later, the company introduced the SUB 300 at Baselworld in 1967. DOXA describes it as a professional-grade dive watch intended to be accessible to a growing public of sports divers. Its rotating bezel and orange dial became defining features of the line.

Why the dial was orange
DOXA traces the dial color to underwater-visibility tests in Lake Neuchâtel in the early 1960s. According to the company, Urs Eschle and a team that included diver Claude Wesly tested colors and found bright orange ideal for divers; DOXA identifies 1964 as the orange-dial milestone. That is the brand’s account of its design decision, not a universal finding about color visibility in every underwater condition.
Cousteau, US Divers and the Aqua-Lung logo
Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the oceanographer and diver, was involved in developing the SUB, according to DOXA. The following year, in 1968, Cousteau’s company US Divers secured an exclusive distribution arrangement for the Americas. Watches sold through that arrangement carried the Aqua-Lung logo. The development collaboration and the later distribution deal were connected parts of the SUB’s story, but they were not the same arrangement.

New SUB models and a military order
In 1968, DOXA introduced the SUB 300T Conquistador, which the company describes as one of the first dive watches with a helium escape valve. DOXA’s history also says the Swiss Army began forming a military-diver corps in 1966 and selected SUB 300T Professional watches after testing. The company estimates that approximately 150 were issued between 1968 and 1975; that figure is DOXA’s retrospective estimate.
The SUB also gained an adventure-fiction association. DOXA says author Clive Cussler first introduced his character Dirk Pitt wearing an orange SUB 300T in the novels in 1973. That connection helped link the model with exploration in popular culture; it does not establish a real-world expedition or endorsement.

The quartz era narrowed the brand’s reach
The quartz revolution put pressure on Swiss watchmakers, and DOXA’s history entered a period of reduced operations and changing ownership. The detailed chronology is less firmly established than the early brand timeline: an enthusiast history of DOXA says Synchron struggled and Aubry Frères bought the company in 1978, after which operations were reduced to a European base. DOXA’s own history does not corroborate that specific 1978 milestone.
The Jenny family acquired DOXA in the mid-to-late 1990s and moved its headquarters to Biel/Bienne. DOXA gives 1997 as the acquisition year, while the enthusiast account places the change in ownership in the mid-1990s. The available accounts therefore differ in precision. Neither supports the claim that DOXA legally ceased to exist: the company continued in a reduced form, even as its SUB line was absent from the dive-watch scene for an extended period.

How the SUB returned in 2002
According to the enthusiast history, Rick Marei approached the Jenny family in 1999 with a plan to revive the 300T. The SUB returned in 2002, bringing back a model that recalled the earlier line while giving DOXA a route back into dive watches. A separate collector retrospective describes the brand as having been away from the dive-watch scene for more than twenty years and sees the reissued 300T and later SUB models as drawing on that original identity. These are collector accounts, rather than a corporate archive or independent market study.
The phrase “almost lost to history” fits the threat to the SUB’s continuity and DOXA’s diminished visibility better than it fits the company’s legal existence. Its comeback was not a resurrection of a business that had disappeared; it was a return of a signature watch line after a long absence.

DOXA’s SUB story continues today
DOXA currently lists a SUB 300 Professional. The official product page specifies a 42.5 mm stainless-steel case, a self-winding COSC-certified mechanical movement, a 38-hour power reserve and 300-meter water resistance. It has a unidirectional bezel with a dual minutes/depth scale and is offered with either a beads-of-rice stainless-steel bracelet or a rubber strap. These are specifications for the listed modern Professional model, not a description of vintage watches or every watch carrying the SUB name.
The present model illustrates what endured: the SUB remains central to DOXA’s identity, with the distinctive dive-watch design carried forward into a current collection. Its history, however, began decades before the dive line—and the interval when that line was missing is part of the story.
