AirPods Pro 3’s Heart-Rate Feature Was Hinted at Months Before Apple Confirmed It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The February 2025 claim that Apple had indirectly revealed an AirPods Pro 3 health feature was substantially right: the feature was workout heart-rate tracking. Apple announced AirPods Pro 3 on September 9, 2025, and began selling them on September 19. The separate temperature-sensor rumor was never confirmed in Apple’s published specifications.

What the original “leak” actually claimed

BGR’s February 11, 2025 article did not show a stolen product photograph, supply-chain document or formal Apple disclosure. It inferred AirPods Pro 3’s likely capabilities from three clues: Apple-owned Beats had launched the Powerbeats Pro 2 with heart-rate monitoring, earlier reports said Apple was developing health sensors for future AirPods, and Apple software contained references to workout heart-rate tracking on upcoming wireless earbuds. BGR’s article also treated temperature sensing as a possibility, not a confirmed specification.

Calling this an Apple “leak” therefore overstates the evidence. It was an indirect product-strategy clue and a prediction. The prediction became more credible as additional software evidence appeared, and Apple ultimately confirmed the heart-rate feature.

The software evidence that preceded the launch

iOS 18 references workout heart-rate tracking

In September 2024, 9to5Mac reported an iOS 18 release-candidate string telling users to wear both earbuds during workouts so heart-rate data could be tracked and sent to Apple Health. The reported code also placed heart-rate sensing controls in Bluetooth settings and referred to new Apple wireless earbuds. That established that Apple was testing the capability in its earbud ecosystem, but it did not prove the product name, final hardware or launch date. 9to5Mac’s report was evidence of development, not a shipping commitment.

iOS 26 named AirPods Pro 3

A later iOS 26 code reference explicitly mentioned “AirPods Pro 3.” MacRumors connected that reference with the existing heart-rate reports and with rumors of possible temperature sensing. The product identification strengthened the case that Apple was preparing a new model, while the unannounced hardware details remained uncertain at the time. MacRumors reported the code reference.

Why Powerbeats Pro 2 was such a strong clue

Powerbeats Pro 2 provided a working, public demonstration of Apple’s earbud-based heart-rate approach before AirPods Pro 3 existed. The reasoning was straightforward:

  1. Apple had already developed an in-ear heart-rate system for a Beats product.
  2. Beats and AirPods operate within Apple’s broader hardware, software and health ecosystem.
  3. Apple’s software and earlier reporting pointed toward workout heart-rate tracking in future wireless earbuds.
  4. Heart-rate sensing in AirPods Pro 3 consequently became a strong expectation rather than a random rumor.

That comparison did not prove that both products used identical sensors, delivered identical readings or offered the same accuracy. Claims that AirPods Pro 3 would be more precise than Powerbeats Pro 2 were inference, not an independently established result.

What Apple ultimately shipped

Apple announced AirPods Pro 3 on September 9, 2025, with retail availability beginning September 19. The U.S. launch price was $249. Apple says the earbuds include a custom photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor: infrared light pulses 256 times per second, and the system measures blood-flow absorption during exercise. Heart-rate and calorie data can appear in the Fitness app on iPhone, with support for more than 50 workout types and Apple’s Workout Buddy feature. Details are in Apple’s launch announcement and published technical specifications.

Is AirPods Pro 3 a general-purpose heart monitor?

No. Apple positions the built-in monitor around workouts. Its support documentation says the feature is intended for workouts with the Fitness app and compatible third-party iPhone apps, rather than diagnosis or continuous passive monitoring. It should not be described as a replacement for an Apple Watch, chest strap, clinical monitor or medical device. Apple’s support page documents the compatibility and use limitations.

  • A compatible iPhone running iOS 26 or later is required for the heart-rate monitor.
  • Users generally need both earbuds worn during workouts.
  • Using the sensor reduces single-charge endurance compared with ordinary ANC listening.
  • In-ear contact matters: poor fit, movement, sweat or an unsuitable ear tip can reasonably affect optical readings, although Apple does not publish a comparative accuracy claim here.
  • Regional rules and availability affect some hearing-health and translation functions.

What happened to the temperature-sensor rumor?

Temperature sensing was discussed repeatedly before launch, but Apple’s published AirPods Pro 3 specifications do not list a body-temperature sensor. A September 2025 report attributed the possibility to an anonymous tipster, while other pre-launch coverage grouped temperature and heart-rate sensing together. 9to5Mac reported the claim, and MacRumors covered the surrounding rumors.

The accurate wording is that temperature sensing was rumored but is not confirmed as a shipped AirPods Pro 3 feature. Apple’s specification list includes microphones, accelerometers, a skin-detect sensor and a heart-rate sensor for workouts, without listing temperature measurement. Do not treat the pre-launch temperature reports as a capability buyers receive.

Other AirPods Pro 3 changes that put the leak in context

Heart-rate tracking is the central confirmation, but the final product also brought a redesigned, smaller body; five ear-tip sizes including XXS; IP57 protection; improved Transparency mode; hearing-health functions such as Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection and automatic Conversation Boost; Bluetooth 5.3; and Apple’s claimed improvement of up to twice the ANC performance of AirPods Pro 2. Apple lists up to 10 hours of listening in Transparency mode when the Hearing Aid feature is active. These features are secondary to the leak story, but they explain why AirPods Pro 3 is more than a sensor revision.

Live Translation did ship

Pre-launch reporting raised the possibility that Live Translation might miss the initial release. Apple instead announced it for AirPods Pro 3, initially in beta and subject to language, regional, hardware and software limits. It is not exclusive to the new model: Apple’s support documentation also lists AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with ANC when paired with a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later. Apple’s compatibility requirements apply.

Should existing AirPods owners care?

AirPods Pro 2 owners

Workout heart-rate tracking, fit changes, improved ANC or a specific hearing-health need can justify an upgrade. If your AirPods Pro 2 already meet your audio, ANC and hearing requirements, the new sensor alone may not change your experience.

Apple Watch owners

An Apple Watch remains the more natural choice for persistent health and workout monitoring. AirPods Pro 3 are attractive when you want workout heart-rate data integrated into premium earbuds without adding a watch, but the two products serve different roles.

Android-first users

The heart-rate, Fitness and translation features depend heavily on current Apple hardware and software. Android users therefore lose much of the product’s health and ecosystem value, even though the earbuds can still function as Bluetooth headphones.

Buyers seeking temperature measurements

Do not buy AirPods Pro 3 expecting body-temperature tracking. Apple has not listed that sensor in its published specifications.

AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch or Powerbeats Pro 2?

Product Best fit Main trade-off
AirPods Pro 3 iPhone and Apple Fitness users wanting workout heart-rate sensing, ANC, hearing features and translation in earbuds. Workout-focused rather than all-day monitoring; Apple ecosystem requirements.
Apple Watch People prioritizing broader, persistent health and workout monitoring. It is a wearable watch, not an earbuds-only purchase.
Powerbeats Pro 2 Workout users who value secure Beats styling and the product that previewed Apple’s earbud heart-rate technology. Different positioning from AirPods Pro 3’s ANC, hearing-health and translation suite.

Verdict: the heart-rate prediction was right, the headline was not

Apple did not conventionally leak AirPods Pro 3 in February 2025. A Beats launch, Apple software references and earlier reporting made workout heart-rate sensing a persuasive inference. Apple then confirmed that feature in September 2025, including a PPG sensor, Fitness integration and workout-specific operation. The temperature-sensor story remains unconfirmed, and AirPods Pro 3 should not be marketed as a medical or continuous heart monitor.
