The claim that it would not be available was accurate at the iOS 26 launch in September 2025, but Apple announced an EU expansion in November and said it would arrive the following month. Access still depends on compatible AirPods, an eligible iPhone, supported languages, and regional availability.
Why the old EU headline is now outdated
At the September 15, 2025 launch of iOS 26, Apple said AirPods Live Translation was unavailable when a user was physically in the EU and their Apple Account country or region was also set to an EU country. It was not simply a restriction based on where the AirPods were purchased. Apple’s launch announcement described that initial limitation.
On November 4, 2025, Apple announced that the feature would expand to the EU the following month. As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s support documentation lists Live Translation for compatible AirPods paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later. Apple notes that availability can vary by region and language, so the expansion does not mean every device, account configuration, or language pair is supported. What the Digital Markets Act had to do with the delay
Apple said the delay required “additional engineering work” to meet requirements under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). Its announcement does not explain the specific legal obligation in detail. The safe conclusion is that Apple delayed the EU rollout while working on DMA compliance—not that the EU banned AirPods translation or explicitly ordered Apple to make this particular feature work with competing earbuds.

What you need to use Live Translation
Live Translation is not an independent capability of the earbuds. Apple says it is enabled by Apple Intelligence on the paired iPhone; downloaded language models are processed on that iPhone. You need all of the following:
- Compatible AirPods: AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, or AirPods Max 2.
- Compatible iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro or later. Not every iPhone 15 model qualifies.
- Software and setup: iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled, the Apple Translate app installed, and the latest AirPods firmware.
- Supported languages: The languages you need must be available for the feature and downloaded to the device.
Apple does not list standard AirPods 4 without ANC or older AirPods models as compatible. Buying supported AirPods alone is not enough if your iPhone or software does not meet the requirements. See Apple’s compatibility and setup guidance.

Which languages are supported?
Apple’s EU announcement lists English (UK and U.S.), French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean for AirPods Live Translation. Regional variants matter: the announcement specifies French from France, German from Germany, Portuguese from Brazil, and Spanish from Spain. This is not universal translation; the available language pairs and Apple Intelligence language settings can limit what you can use. Apple lists separate language support for AirPods, Messages, Phone, and FaceTime, so support in one feature does not establish support in another. See Apple’s language and feature details.
How to set up and start a translation
- Put your AirPods in your ears and connect them to your iPhone.
- Open Settings, tap your connected AirPods, then under Translation tap Languages.
- Download both the language being spoken and the language you want to hear.
- Open the Translate app and tap Live.
- Select the spoken language and the translation language, then tap Start Translation.
You can also start a session by assigning Translate to the iPhone Action button, asking Siri to “start Live Translation,” or—on supported stem-equipped AirPods—pressing and holding both stems at the same time. Apple also supports Live Translation during supported Phone or FaceTime calls. The exact options are described in Apple’s instructions.

Does the other person need AirPods?
No. If the other person does not have compatible AirPods, you can show them a translated transcript on the iPhone or play the translated response through the iPhone speaker. If both people have supported AirPods and have started Live Translation, each can listen to translations in their chosen language. The iPhone transcript or speaker is the practical fallback for a one-sided setup. Apple explains the conversation options here.
What to check if Live Translation is missing or not working
- Confirm the hardware: Check that your AirPods model is on Apple’s supported list and that your iPhone is an iPhone 15 Pro or later.
- Check software and configuration: Update to iOS 26 or later, enable and finish configuring Apple Intelligence, install Translate, and make sure the AirPods have the latest firmware. AirPods firmware updates are generally installed automatically when the earbuds are charging near a connected iPhone, but an update may not happen immediately.
- Download both languages: In Settings > [your AirPods] > Translation > Languages, download the incoming and target languages.
- Check availability for your region and language: Apple’s initial restriction depended on both physical location and Apple Account region. For current availability, consult Apple’s live feature-availability information rather than relying on an old launch headline. Do not assume that changing an account region, SIM, or device language will unlock a feature; account-region changes can affect other Apple services.
- Improve microphone pickup: In noisy surroundings, Apple says the iPhone microphones can supplement the AirPods microphones. Moving the iPhone closer to the speaker may help.
- Verify important translations: Apple warns that generative-model outputs can be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. Do not rely on Live Translation alone for medical conversations, legal or immigration matters, emergencies, financial transactions, safety-critical directions, or nuanced business negotiations.
Apple describes downloaded language-model processing as taking place on the iPhone, with conversation data remaining private there. That is Apple’s description of Live Translation; it should not be read as a claim that every Apple Intelligence operation is always entirely offline. Is Live Translation a good reason to buy AirPods?
It can be useful if you already have a compatible iPhone and want a more hands-free way to listen to translations. If you have an older iPhone, need an unsupported language, expect earbuds to work without a phone, or need dependable interpretation for high-stakes communication, Live Translation is a poor reason on its own to buy AirPods or upgrade. The Translate app can handle the transcript or speaker fallback; other phone translation apps may suit people who need broader device compatibility, but their language coverage and features vary. For consequential or nuanced conversations, use a qualified human interpreter.
Apple’s AirPods, Messages, Phone, FaceTime, and Translate experiences are related but have different compatibility and language requirements. Do not assume that availability in one means availability in another. Apple’s feature announcement distinguishes them.
