Short answer: Apple has not announced smart glasses, but current reporting points to a possible late-2027 customer launch and a potential WWDC 2027 unveiling. The first product is more likely to resemble camera-and-audio glasses than full augmented reality. Meta already sells several AI-glasses models, Google’s Android XR partners are targeting audio glasses for fall 2026, and Snap says its $2,195 SPECS AR glasses should ship in fall 2026 in the United States, United Kingdom, and France.

The important distinction is between camera glasses, display glasses, and true AR glasses. They solve different problems, cost very different amounts, and have different launch certainty.

Three different kinds of “AI glasses”

Category What it does Examples Main limitation
Camera AI glasses Cameras, microphones, open-ear speakers and a voice assistant provide photos, calls, audio and visual question answering. Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Glasses No image is projected into the wearer’s view; privacy concerns remain.
Display AI glasses A small display adds messages, navigation, translation or media controls. Ray-Ban Meta Display Higher cost, weight and battery demands than camera-only glasses.
AR glasses See-through optics place digital objects and interfaces into the environment. Snap SPECS; Meta Orion is a prototype Expensive, technically difficult and not yet an ordinary mass-market product.
AI audio wearables Earbuds, pendants or similar devices deliver voice AI without a display. Apple’s reported pendant and camera-enabled AirPods Limited visual context unless cameras are added.

Apple Vision Pro belongs to the headset category, not the lightweight-glasses category. A future Vision successor and everyday AI glasses should not be treated as the same product.

Apple’s reported smart-glasses roadmap

Apple is reportedly developing AI glasses, but it has published no name, price, design, specifications or launch commitment. Bloomberg reporting says Apple is currently targeting a late-2027 customer launch; MacRumors, summarizing that reporting, says a WWDC 2027 unveiling is being considered. A prior late-2026 or early-2027 target reportedly moved later, and Apple hardware schedules can slip.

What the first Apple glasses may do

Reporting describes a product built around visual context and Siri, probably with microphones, speakers, cameras and an iPhone connection. Possible uses include asking Siri about visible objects or text, calls, notifications, music, podcasts, navigation, contextual assistance and accessibility features such as audio descriptions. Hands-free image capture is possible if Apple enables recording.

These are reported or inferred capabilities, not a final feature list. Apple has reportedly tested camera-equipped prototypes, versions without cameras and cameras intended primarily for AI sensing rather than conventional recording. The eventual privacy controls, indicator light and recording behavior are unknown.

Why a display may come later

The evidence does not establish a full AR display in Apple’s first mass-market glasses. A display adds difficult trade-offs: battery capacity, heat, optical clarity, outdoor brightness, prescription compatibility, weight, cost and social acceptability. Apple may first compete with camera-and-audio products before attempting true spatial overlays.

Apple’s other reported AI wearables

Bloomberg also reported work on an AirTag-sized AI pendant that could be worn on clothing or as a necklace, plus AirPods with cameras or expanded AI functions. These projects are less certain than the glasses and have no announced release date or specifications. They appear to share a broader goal: a more capable Siri that can use visual context from several devices.

Google, Samsung and Warby Parker

Google’s Android XR platform covers headsets and glasses. Google says its first partner collections of audio glasses are coming in fall 2026, with Gemini assistance for translation, navigation, calls, messaging, music, reminders and contextual questions. The platform page does not provide a final consumer price, and its display-glasses section says to “stay tuned.”

Warby Parker Intelligent Eyewear, developed with Google and Samsung, is still a preview and signup opportunity rather than a priced retail product. Warby Parker describes Gemini, real-time translation, turn-by-turn navigation, photo and video capture, open-ear audio and voice control. Availability, specifications and pricing remain unconfirmed.

Buy now or wait for Apple?

Buy a current product if you need hands-free functions now

  • You want calls, music, photos or basic visual AI today.
  • You need prescription-compatible or sports-oriented frames now.
  • You accept a phone connection, cloud services, a companion app and a Meta account.
  • You prefer ordinary-looking glasses and do not require a visual overlay.

Wait for Apple if ecosystem integration matters most

  • You rely heavily on iPhone, Siri, Apple services, AirPods or Apple Watch.
  • You can wait beyond the reported late-2027 target.
  • You want to evaluate Apple’s privacy and accessibility decisions before buying.
  • You do not need a verified product immediately.

Do not wait specifically for Apple when you need full AR

  • Apple has not confirmed a display in its first reported glasses.
  • You need hardware before late 2027.
  • You want Android compatibility or an announced AR product.
  • You prefer proven specifications to an unannounced roadmap.

What to check before buying any AI glasses

  1. Display: Confirm whether there is no display, a monocular display or true see-through AR.
  2. Camera behavior: Check recording indicators, disable controls and whether surroundings can be analyzed without saved video.
  3. Phone and account: Verify iOS or Android versions, companion-app requirements, cellular connectivity and account rules.
  4. Prescription and fit: Confirm supported prescriptions, lens treatments, regional availability, bridge geometry and added cost.
  5. Battery: Distinguish continuous audio, camera-heavy, display and case-assisted runtime.
  6. Privacy and social rules: Ask whether cameras are acceptable at work, school, hospitals, gyms, museums and performances, and follow applicable recording laws.
  7. AI limitations: Treat object recognition, text reading and directions as fallible; do not use them for medical diagnosis, emergency response, legal or financial advice, or unsupervised child safety.
  8. Service dependence: Weak phone connectivity, unsupported countries, outages, updates or discontinued cloud features can remove major functions.
  9. Language and region: Features can be restricted by country and language. Oakley, for example, says full voice commands are currently available only in English, French, Spanish and Italian in supported markets.
  10. Repair and ownership: Integrated cameras, batteries and hinges can make repairs, warranty coverage and replacement costs more important than the sticker price.

Oakley’s official requirements include a compatible Android phone or iPhone, wireless internet, the Meta AI app and a Meta account; features may change, be withdrawn, require subscriptions or vary by region. See the Oakley Meta HSTN product page.

Three-year outlook through August 2029

Forecast Confidence Why
More Meta camera and display models High Meta already sells multiple categories and has an established eyewear partnership.
Android XR audio glasses High Google lists partner collections for fall 2026.
Snap SPECS shipping High Snap has announced price, deposit and target markets for fall 2026.
Apple camera/audio glasses around late 2027 Medium Multiple reports identify that target, but Apple has not confirmed it.
Apple full AR glasses by 2029 Low No verified launch date or first-generation display specification exists.

Bottom line

The market is becoming tiered rather than uniform: affordable camera-and-audio glasses, midrange display glasses and expensive AR systems. Meta is the practical choice for buying now. Google’s Android XR partners and Snap expand the alternatives in 2026. Apple’s likely first move is a tightly integrated iPhone accessory, reportedly arriving no earlier than late 2027, while full Apple AR glasses remain speculative.
