Google’s 2024 Pixel 9 generation offered several ideas iPhone and Apple Watch users can reasonably wish Apple would adopt: emergency response after a possible loss-of-pulse event, a practical way to get the photographer into a group picture, and more useful guidance around calls and running. That is not a verdict that Pixel is better overall. These are examples of thoughtful features, with real limits, that highlight opportunities for Apple.
This is a retrospective on the Pixel 9 and Pixel Watch 3, not a current-hardware buying guide. Apple has since added or expanded capabilities in some of these areas, so the question is less “Does Apple have this?” than “Does Apple make the same task as clear, useful and accessible?”
Loss-of-pulse detection is the most consequential Apple Watch idea
Google introduced Loss of Pulse Detection with Pixel Watch 3. Google describes a system that looks for a possible loss-of-pulse event, runs confirmation checks and can contact emergency services if the wearer does not respond. Its potential value is straightforward: a watch may be able to seek help when its wearer cannot.
This is not the same as irregular-heart-rhythm notifications or high- and low-heart-rate alerts, which flag certain patterns or readings. Nor is it fall detection, crash detection or a user-triggered Emergency SOS. Loss-of-pulse detection is intended to respond to a specific possible emergency, rather than a fall, collision or request for help. Google’s announcement explains the feature as part of the 2024 device generation: Made by Google 2024.

- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
The feature is not a medical diagnosis or a guarantee that cardiac arrest will be detected. Fit, skin contact, motion, sensor obstruction, battery level and the ability to reach emergency services can all affect what happens. Google availability and regulatory approval vary by territory; check whether it is supported where you live before relying on it.
Apple has a substantial set of safety and health features, but those categories should not be treated as interchangeable. The Apple Watch lineup and its capabilities vary by model and software: Apple Watch. The useful wishlist item is a carefully validated, clearly explained feature for this particular emergency scenario—not a broad claim that a watch can replace medical care or emergency planning.
Add Me fixes the missing-photographer problem
In a group photo, someone usually has to stand behind the camera. Pixel 9’s Add Me workflow is designed to let that person appear in the final picture: take a photo of the group, switch the photographer into the scene for another capture, and let the phone combine the images. Google introduced the feature as part of the Pixel 9 generation: Pixel 9 AI features.
It is a compelling use of computational photography because it solves a recognizable problem instead of asking users to prompt a general-purpose image generator. Apple could borrow the guided camera workflow and make the resulting composite easy to review, edit and identify as a composite.

Add Me’s result is not necessarily a single exposure in which everyone was present at once. If people move, lighting changes, or bodies overlap differently between captures, compositing can introduce warped edges, shadows or other visible artifacts. Keep the original images, inspect the result and be especially cautious about using a composite as documentary evidence in professional, legal or journalistic contexts.
Call Notes turn routine conversations into something searchable
Call Notes was among the Pixel 9 generation’s call-related tools. A record and summary of a conversation can help with an appointment time, a delivery instruction, a repair visit or a customer-service reference number—details that are easy to forget after hanging up. Google’s feature announcement describes the Pixel 9 call tools: Pixel 9 AI features.
Apple has since added call recording and transcription-related capabilities in newer iOS software, narrowing the original Pixel advantage. The precise experience can differ by software version, region and language. When comparing phones, look beyond whether a feature exists: does it work on ordinary cellular calls, produce a transcript, distinguish speakers, make notes searchable, and function without a network connection? Those details determine whether call intelligence is genuinely useful.

Recording and transcription laws differ by jurisdiction, and participants may need notice or consent. Automated transcripts and summaries can mishear names, addresses, numbers and technical terms or omit context. Treat the output as a convenience, not the authoritative record for medical, legal, employment or financial decisions. Consider what sensitive information is captured, where it is processed, how long it is retained and who can access or share it.

Apple needs a more forgiving, coherent photo-editing workflow
Pixel’s appeal is not just camera hardware. Google has emphasized software that helps users improve or reshape a photo after capture, including removing distractions and using generative tools. The Pixel 9 announcement outlines these camera and editing features: Pixel 9 AI features.
There is an important difference between assistive editing—such as removing a distraction or adjusting exposure—and generative alteration, which creates pixels the camera did not capture. Changes that alter who was present or what happened raise a separate authenticity question. Apple’s opportunity is not simply to add more AI labels; it is to make editing fast, discoverable and reversible within a native camera-to-Photos workflow, while helping users understand when an image has been materially changed.
Apple’s current Photos and camera software may overlap with parts of this toolkit, but overlapping tools do not guarantee the same workflow or result. For a user, the key tests are whether an edit is easy to find, whether the original can be restored, whether generated changes are apparent, and whether the tool works reliably across ordinary scenes.
Pixel Watch running insights should be easier to act on
Pixel Watch 3 combines Fitbit-oriented activity tracking with running metrics, training guidance and cardio-load information. Google markets personalized recommendations, but some advanced Fitbit insights may require Fitbit Premium. The product page describes the watch and its Fitbit features: Pixel Watch 3. Google also discussed Pixel-generation health features here: Pixel 9 AI features.
Apple already has a mature Fitness and Workout ecosystem. The wishlist is for a single, comprehensible view that answers “What should I do today?” and explains why—bringing training load, effort and recovery-style context together without making a runner interpret several separate screens or depend excessively on a recurring subscription.
Any coaching estimate is only as useful as its inputs. Incorrect profile details, heart-rate zones, GPS conditions or watch fit can skew the picture. Guidance may not account for injury, illness, medication, heat, altitude or pregnancy, and should not be mistaken for medical advice. A readiness or recovery estimate is a training aid, not a clinical assessment.

Proactive help is valuable when it saves effort without surprising the user
Pixel’s 2024 pitch connected Gemini assistance, call information, saved material and camera tools more directly to everyday tasks. The promise is less time spent hunting through information or figuring out which app to open. Google’s Pixel 9 feature overview describes those capabilities: Pixel 9 AI features. Pixel 9’s product page also sets out Google’s software and AI positioning: Pixel 9.
For Apple, the lesson is not that every task needs an assistant. A useful feature should save repeated effort, work consistently, let users correct or undo its output, respect private information, and be available in the user’s language and region without an unexpected subscription. Assistance that searches screenshots, summarizes calls or uses health and location context should also make its data access understandable. More automation is not automatically better if it makes familiar controls harder to predict.
Later Watch 3 updates show why launch features and software features differ
Google’s March 2026 Pixel Drop expanded some gesture controls and Google Wallet functionality to Pixel Watch 3. These are later software additions, not features to attribute to the watch’s 2024 launch. Rollout, software requirements and availability can vary by model and market: March 2026 Pixel Drop.
One-handed gestures can help when touching a small screen is awkward, including for some users with dexterity needs. They can also misfire or take practice. Google’s update is a useful reminder that a watch’s capabilities may change after purchase; the exact experience depends on compatible software and rollout status.
Google’s integration is useful, but it is not a universal ecosystem win
Pixel Watch 3 is designed to work most naturally with Pixel phones and Google services. Google provides a watch-transfer workflow for moving to a new phone, with behavior that can depend on device, account and software versions. The Pixel Watch product page describes its features and transfer support: Pixel Watch 3.
That continuity can be useful, but the experience also spans Google, Fitbit, carrier and third-party services. Apple’s countervailing strength remains the breadth of integration among iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, Mac and other Apple hardware. The Pixel Watch 3 is not a straightforward Apple Watch replacement for an iPhone owner; moving to it means considering the phone platform as well as the watch. Pixel 9 specifications, including its 6.3-inch Actua display, are listed for the base model here: Pixel 9 specifications. Pixel Watch 3 specifications list 41mm and 45mm sizes: Pixel Watch 3 specifications.
