Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Apple Watch Series 10 is repairable, but it is a poor candidate for casual DIY work. iFixit’s teardown and repair guides show that battery and screen replacements are possible; the catch is that the display is glued tightly to the case and must be opened without damaging it. That makes the screen, adhesive and seal the main risks—not the idea of replacing a battery itself.
What iFixit found in the Series 10
iFixit published its Apple Watch Series 10 teardown on October 8, 2024, after Apple announced the watch on September 9 and began U.S. availability on September 20. A teardown documents how a device comes apart; it does not establish that the procedure is practical for an average owner.
Contemporary reporting attributed a 3/10 repairability score to iFixit. Treat that as iFixit’s rating, not an industry-wide measurement: its smartwatch repairability index describes repairability on iFixit’s own scale, and the text currently shown for the Series 10 lists pros and cons without displaying the numeric score. iFixit’s revised methodology weights design for repair at 80%, public service manuals at 10%, and parts availability and cost at 10%; parts pairing can also incur a penalty, according to its version 1.9 scoring rubric.
That weighting helps explain why a watch can have identifiable battery and display repair paths and still earn a low score. iFixit’s July 2024 methodology update says recent Apple Watches generally fall in the 3-to-4 range under the newer approach. Older Apple Watch scores are not directly comparable because the scoring expectations changed.

- What helps: The band is straightforward to replace, and battery and display are recognized repair priorities.
- What hurts: Tight seams and extensive adhesive make opening and reassembly difficult. iFixit’s assessment also points to a lack of official Apple parts and repair instructions for this model.
Why opening the watch is the hard part
The display is bonded around its perimeter, leaving a narrow seam between glass and case. iFixit’s 46 mm battery replacement guide calls for softening the adhesive with heat before inserting a thin opening tool. Too much heat or prying force can damage the OLED panel, battery, cables or case edge.
Opening also disturbs the seal. Old adhesive has to be removed and replacement adhesive installed for reassembly. A watch that closes again is not necessarily a watch with its original water resistance: a home or third-party repair should not be assumed to restore the factory seal reliably.

Can you replace the battery?
Yes. But the battery is not accessed through a simple removable back. In the iFixit procedure, the display must first be loosened and lifted to reach the battery, which is itself secured with adhesive. The critical risk is turning a battery job into a screen replacement if the OLED cracks during opening.
At a high level, the work involves powering down the watch, softening and cutting through the screen adhesive, lifting and disconnecting the display as needed, removing the battery adhesive, disconnecting and lifting out the battery, cleaning the old adhesive, then fitting new battery and screen adhesive before reassembly and testing. The guide is for experienced repairers, not a guarantee of success for an unpractised owner.

Can you replace the screen?
Yes. iFixit lists separate Series 10 screen-replacement guides for the 46 mm version and its Series 10 device page, which covers repair resources and configurations. The screen is both the part being replaced and the route into the watch, so a cracked panel or a damaged cable can complicate the repair before the replacement part is even installed.

Screen economics matter, too. iFixit’s parts page showed a $219.99 price for either listed screen size on August 18, 2026; prices, stock and regional availability can change. That cost can make a repair unattractive on an older or already-damaged watch, especially once labor and the risk of further damage are considered.

Apple service or AppleCare+
Apple’s Apple Watch service page lets owners start a repair or replacement request, check service options and obtain an estimate. Options include in-person service through an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider and mail-in service. Apple says final fees depend on inspection and other factors; the page does not establish one fixed Series 10 price. Apple’s service and replacement-parts guarantee is 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer.

Apple’s public service route includes repair and replacement pathways, but the exact result depends on the fault, region, coverage, parts availability and inspection. Do not assume every case means a component repair or that every case means a replacement. AppleCare+ terms and fees also vary, so check the applicable plan rather than relying on a general price.
Independent repair
A specialist may make sense if Apple’s estimate is high relative to the watch’s value. Before authorizing work, ask whether the shop has Series 10 experience, whether it will replace a component or exchange the unit, what parts it uses, what warranty it provides, and whether it can test the seal. Even then, do not treat a successful closure as proof of factory-level water resistance.
DIY repair
DIY is most defensible for someone experienced with sealed OLED devices who can accept the possibility of destroying the display or battery. iFixit’s parts page lists different 42 mm and 46 mm components, so verify the case size and model number before ordering. Listed compatible identifiers include A2997, A2998, A3001 and A3002 for 42 mm, and A2999, A3000, A3003 and A3206 for 46 mm; configurations and regional identifiers differ.
What repairability means if you are buying or keeping one
Repairability is a real weakness for anyone expecting easy battery swaps or routine home maintenance. The Series 10 launched in the U.S. at $399, but that is its original launch price, not a current service or replacement quote. Its thinner, integrated design does not make internal service simple. If you value the features and are comfortable using official or professional service, the repair difficulty may be an acceptable trade-off; if long-term DIY repair is a priority, compare current repairability information before buying.
