Check the rate over several days under ordinary wear; a sudden, substantial change or condensation inside the case deserves prompt professional attention.
Build a daily routine around your watch’s instructions
Wind it without forcing the crown
Automatic watches wind as their rotor moves, usually while worn, but the amount depends on the watch and the wearer. Hand-wound watches require winding by crown. The correct winding method, starting procedure and power reserve vary by model, so use the watch’s manual rather than treating another brand’s guidance as a rule.
As examples of that variation, TAG Heuer says most of its watches have a reserve of one to two days and describes turning the crown about 30–40 times to restart a stopped watch. Patek Philippe says its self-winding movements generally have a reserve of 38 to 48 hours, with exceptions, and suggests a few gentle crown turns to restart a stopped watch. These figures describe those makers’ watches, not all mechanical watches. Cartier advises stopping rather than forcing the crown when spring tension is felt. See the current manufacturer guidance from TAG Heuer, Patek Philippe and Cartier.
If your watch has a screw-down crown, return it to its proper secured position after winding or setting. Follow the model’s instructions: a crown left unsecured can compromise water resistance.

Store it safely when it is off your wrist
Keep the watch away from magnetic sources, hard impacts, prolonged vibration and abrupt temperature changes. These can affect performance or damage the movement. A stable, dry place away from strong magnets and accidental knocks is a better choice than leaving it beside equipment that vibrates or generates a magnetic field. Patek Philippe’s care recommendations and Seiko’s mechanical-watch FAQ discuss these risks.
How to keep a mechanical watch accurate
Understand what can change its rate
A mechanical watch’s accuracy is its rate of gain or loss over time; it is not a fixed promise that every watch will show identical time in every situation. Temperature, gravity and resting position, shocks, magnetism, how often the watch is worn and how fully its mainspring is wound can all affect the rate. Seiko’s UK guidance advises avoiding temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C for its watches; those limits should not be assumed to apply to every maker or model. See Seiko’s UK mechanical-watch guidance and Patek Philippe’s recommendations.

Track a change before deciding what it means
Compare the watch with a reliable time reference over several days, wearing it as usual and noting roughly how much it gains or loses each day. A consistent small difference may reflect the watch’s normal rate and your use pattern; a new, substantial change is a reason to arrange an assessment rather than trying to regulate the movement yourself.
Magnetism is one possible cause of a watch that suddenly runs much faster or slower. TAG Heuer explains that it can affect the hairspring. Seiko notes that a watch can remain magnetized after it has been moved away from the source. Its FAQ also suggests comparing gain or loss in different resting positions over seven to eight hours; this can help identify a position that suits a particular watch, but it does not repair a new or significant accuracy problem. See TAG Heuer’s maintenance guidance and Seiko’s FAQ.

Protect the watch from water
Water resistance is a condition of the watch, not a permanent guarantee. Seals can lose elasticity with age and temperature changes, so a rating alone does not establish that an older or unchecked watch is safe for regular water exposure. Jaeger-LeCoultre explains seal deterioration in its functional-check service information; Cartier also notes that seals naturally degrade in its day-to-day advice.
- Check the exact model’s instructions and rating before exposing it to water; do not assume a rating or general rule applies to a different model.
- Make sure the crown is in its correct position. Do not operate the crown or pushers underwater or while the watch is wet.
- If you regularly wear the watch in water, have its water resistance checked at the interval specified by its maker.
- If condensation appears inside the case, arrange prompt inspection.
- For a water-resistant watch exposed to salt water or chlorinated pool water, Cartier recommends rinsing it with clear water.
TAG Heuer states, “A watch’s water resistance cannot be permanently guaranteed.” Read its maintenance guidance alongside the instructions for your own watch.

Clean the case, crystal and strap carefully
Cleaning advice depends on the case, finish, bracelet, seals and strap material. TAG Heuer recommends a microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush with warm water for gentle cleaning of the watch face and metal bracelet, and advises against soap in that guidance. Do not extend those instructions to leather or to finishes and materials the maker has not covered.
Cartier advises keeping leather away from water and other liquids. Before using moisture or any cleaning product, check the model’s instructions; when in doubt, use a dry, soft cloth and ask the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker about the specific material. Sources: TAG Heuer and Cartier.

When to arrange a service
Service schedules differ by maker, and a water-resistance test or functional check is not the same as a complete overhaul. The following are current manufacturer recommendations checked on 3 October 2026; they are not a shared industry standard. Use your own maker’s guidance and the watch’s condition to decide what service is appropriate.
| Maker | Recommendation | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Patek Philippe | Every eight to ten years | Service for mechanical watches; see Patek Philippe’s care recommendations. |
| TAG Heuer | Approximately every five to six years; water-resistance test every two years for watches regularly exposed to water | Overhaul interval and separate water-resistance testing recommendation; see TAG Heuer’s maintenance guidance. |
| Seiko | Once every three years | Examination, cleaning and oiling where needed; see Seiko’s mechanical-watch FAQ. |
| Breguet | Complete service every five to eight years; annual water-resistance check | Breguet also advises annual water-resistance checks for watches often exposed to water or moisture; see Breguet’s preservation guidance. |
| Cartier | Functional check every six years | Cartier recommends earlier assessment if the watch begins running noticeably fast or slow; see Cartier’s day-to-day advice. |
Arrange an assessment sooner than a routine visit if the watch develops a sudden, substantial rate change, stops unexpectedly, suffers a hard impact or shows condensation. Tell the service provider what changed and when; that information can help distinguish a functional issue from a water-resistance concern.
