Choose quartz if you want accurate timekeeping with little day-to-day attention; choose mechanical if you value the movement’s traditional construction and the experience of winding or wearing it enough to accept more timekeeping variation and upkeep. Neither is universally better: compare the specifications and care guidance for the particular watch you’re considering.

How do quartz and mechanical movements work?

Mechanical watches store energy in a mainspring

A mechanical movement uses interconnected parts rather than a battery. The mainspring stores energy, while the gear train, escapement and balance wheel regulate its release. A manual mechanical watch needs winding at the crown. An automatic watch uses wrist movement to wind its mainspring. Hamilton explains the movement types in its official FAQ.

Quartz watches use a battery and electronic timekeeping

A quartz watch uses a battery and quartz-based electronics to keep time. Both quartz and mechanical movements can power analog watches. A conventional quartz analog second hand often ticks once per second, while a mechanical second hand commonly moves in more frequent visible beats. That is a clue, not a reliable identification rule for every design; check the watch’s specifications rather than judging by appearance.

Which movement is more accurate?

Quartz is generally the more practical choice when accuracy is the priority, but the figures below are broad guidance from named sources, not promises for every model.

Mechanical rate can change with winding level, wrist movement, temperature, position and operating environment. Seiko advises assessing an average over a period of wear rather than judging a mechanical watch from a single day. Seiko’s accuracy guidance explains this point.

What are the daily-use trade-offs?

Consideration Quartz Mechanical
Routine Runs on a battery and does not need regular winding. Manual models need winding; automatics depend on wrist motion and their reserve.
Intermittent wear Convenient when a watch is worn only occasionally because it does not rely on a wound mainspring. An automatic may stop after its reserve runs down; a manual watch needs winding before or during use.
Ownership appeal Suited to straightforward timekeeping with little routine involvement. May appeal to someone who enjoys the movement’s construction, craftsmanship and heritage.
Ongoing attention Battery replacement is eventually necessary; follow the maker’s battery and service guidance. Requires attention to winding or wearing, timekeeping variation and the maker’s service recommendations.

How long does a mechanical watch run between wears?

Check the stated power reserve for the model. Patek Philippe says many of its self-winding watches typically have a 38–48-hour reserve, with exceptions; that range is its own care guidance, not a standard for all automatic watches. Patek Philippe’s service guidance provides its recommendations.

How often do watches need service?

There is no single service interval that applies to every brand and model. Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its quartz and mechanical watches. Victorinox recommends a complete overhaul of its mechanical movements every four to six years. These are different manufacturers’ recommendations, so use the guidance for the watch you own rather than treating either interval as universal.

Battery replacement also involves more than choosing a new cell if water resistance matters. Victorinox advises having batteries in its watches replaced through an authorized retailer or service center, linking authorized service to warranty preservation and water-resistance testing. This is Victorinox-specific advice; follow the policy for your own watch. Victorinox watch FAQs.

How should you choose the right movement?

  1. Start with your priority. Choose quartz if dependable timekeeping and minimal routine interaction matter most. Choose mechanical if the winding ritual, traditional movement construction and craftsmanship are meaningful to you.
  2. Match it to your wearing pattern. If you plan to rotate watches or wear one only occasionally, consider whether you are comfortable resetting and winding a mechanical watch after it stops. For an automatic, compare its stated reserve with the time between wears.
  3. Compare the actual model specifications. Check its accuracy tolerance, power reserve or battery procedure, warranty, water-resistance service policy and purchase price. A movement label alone does not tell you how a particular watch performs or what its maintenance entails.
  4. Follow the maker’s care instructions. Service intervals and battery procedures differ by brand and model; use the manufacturer’s recommendations for the specific watch.

Hamilton’s official guidance captures the preference trade-off: it describes quartz as superior in accuracy and reliability, while noting that enthusiasts and collectors often prefer mechanical watches for their craftsmanship and heritage. Those are distinct reasons to choose—not evidence that a mechanical movement keeps time better. Hamilton’s movement-choice FAQ.
