A watch marked “30 m” or “10 ATM” has passed a pressure-related test; the marking is not a guarantee that you can take it to that depth. What you can safely do with it depends on the exact model’s instructions, its water-resistance designation and its condition.
What does a watch’s metre or bar rating mean?
Water-resistance markings describe performance under controlled test conditions, not a literal safe operating depth. ISO 22810:2010, Horology — Water-resistant watches, sets requirements and test methods for water-resistant watches. The ISO catalogue says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remains current. ISO 22810:2010
Casio explains that metre markings are a pictorial representation of test pressure. In other words, “30 m” is a rating label—not permission to descend 30 metres underwater. Nor should you treat a bar or ATM figure as a direct guide to an activity without checking the watch’s own instructions. Casio’s water-resistance guidance
Does a general water-resistance rating mean a watch is a dive watch?
No. ISO distinguishes watches intended for ordinary use, including swimming, from watches intended for scuba diving: ISO 22810 covers water-resistant watches, while ISO 6425 covers divers’ watches. A general metre or pressure rating by itself does not establish that a watch is qualified for scuba diving. ISO’s explanation of the two standards

How to decide what you can do with a particular watch
- Find the exact model and its manual. Look up the maker’s current activity guidance for that watch, not just the number on the dial or case back.
- Check the designation and permitted use. A maker’s activity chart is specific to its own watches; it is not a universal conversion table. Seiko, for example, separates its own 3 BAR, 5 BAR, 10/15/20 BAR and diver-watch guidance. Seiko’s water-resistance FAQ
- Consider age, damage and service history. Seals can age, and a shock can deform a gasket. If the watch is old, has been hit, or has not been checked in line with its maker’s service guidance, don’t assume its original rating still describes its current condition.
- Follow model-specific care instructions after exposure. Seiko, for example, recommends wiping moisture, sweat and dirt with a soft, dry cloth and rinsing after ocean use; it warns against washing the watch while the crown is pulled out. These are Seiko instructions, not universal care rules. Seiko’s water-resistance FAQ
Why water resistance can change
Water resistance is not necessarily permanent. Casio notes that seals naturally wear and that temperature extremes, solvents and cosmetics can contribute to deterioration. Seiko also warns that gasket aging or deformation after accidental shock can affect resistance. For a watch that is older or damaged, check the manual or ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider about inspection before relying on it around water.
