Short answer: Apple reportedly explored camera-equipped Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra models for Visual Intelligence, but Bloomberg reported on May 22, 2025, that the work had stopped. As of August 18, 2026, Apple has announced no camera-equipped Apple Watch. Treat the headline as a past rumor about a canceled or shelved project—not as current launch news.
What Apple reportedly planned
In March 2025, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was developing future Apple Watch models with built-in cameras. The concept was aimed primarily at visual understanding: point the watch toward something nearby and ask Apple Intelligence what it is or what information is available about it. The report did not describe a conventional watch camera intended mainly for photos, video calls or FaceTime.
The report described more than one possible design:
- A standard Apple Watch camera positioned in or near the display area.
- An Apple Watch Ultra camera positioned on the side of the case near the Digital Crown.
- A possible release target around 2027, which was a reported internal goal rather than a public commitment.
These details came from reporting, not an Apple product announcement. MacRumors’ account of the March 2025 report is the relevant contemporary source.

What Visual Intelligence on a watch might have done
The proposed camera would have supplied visual context to an AI system. Reported examples included:
- Identifying a plant, object or landmark.
- Reading text on a sign and translating it.
- Describing what is in front of the wearer.
- Finding a restaurant’s or store’s hours and ratings.
- Providing product or place information, and potentially contextual directions.
Those were possible use cases, not a finalized feature list. The idea was closer to an always-available visual sensor for Apple Intelligence than to a miniature iPhone camera. The reporting specifically made FaceTime and ordinary photography unlikely as the main purpose.
The project was reportedly stopped in May 2025
On May 22, 2025, Bloomberg reported that Apple had stopped work on both the camera-equipped Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra projects. The products had reportedly been aimed at around 2027. Apple did not publicly give a reason, and the report left open the possibility that related technology could return in another form. “Canceled” or “shelved” is therefore a fair description of the latest report; “delayed to 2027” is not.

Apple has not confirmed why the work ended. The following are product considerations, not disclosed causes:
- Aiming: A wrist does not automatically point where the wearer is looking; using the camera could require an awkward wrist or arm movement.
- Privacy: A less obvious camera raises questions about recording indicators, accidental capture, storage and use in places such as schools or businesses. No policy for the canceled concept was published.
- Battery and heat: Camera capture, wireless transfer and AI processing could add load to a small battery and enclosure. There are no public tests quantifying the effect.
- Connectivity: Apple’s current watch AI features depend on a compatible iPhone nearby, so a future camera watch might still rely on the phone for processing, data or both.
- Display limits: A watch can identify a subject, but a small screen is a poor place for a long visual answer. Spoken responses through AirPods could be more practical.
- Cost and overlap: A camera may add complexity while competing with form factors that naturally face the same direction as the wearer.
Apple’s 2026 wearable strategy points elsewhere
2026 reporting has centered on camera-equipped AirPods, smart glasses and a camera-and-microphone pendant or pin rather than a revived camera Apple Watch. Bloomberg reported advanced testing of camera-equipped AirPods in May 2026 and described the broader glasses, pendant and AirPods effort in February 2026:

Glasses and earbuds place sensors close to the head and line of sight, which may make visual queries more natural than a camera mounted on the wrist. The reports still concern unreleased products; they do not establish a shipping date or retail availability.
What Apple officially supports now
Apple’s June 2026 announcements expanded Apple Intelligence features across its platforms, including Apple Watch software. Apple lists support for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone. Language, region and other hardware requirements also apply.

This is software support, not camera hardware. Existing Apple Watch models do not gain a built-in camera through watchOS, and Apple has not announced visual scanning through the watch itself. Consult Apple’s announcements for the current compatibility conditions: next-generation Apple Intelligence and Siri and Apple Intelligence in everyday experiences.

How this differs from Visual Intelligence on iPhone
On iPhone, Visual Intelligence uses the phone’s camera or on-screen content to recognize objects and locations, read or summarize text, translate, search for products, ask ChatGPT about what the camera sees and trigger actions based on the result. The watch rumor represented a change in interaction: the user would wear the visual sensor rather than raise an iPhone.
A watch implementation would not necessarily copy the iPhone interface, Camera Control button or response flow. “Visual Intelligence support” could also mean a watch displays results from a camera in another device, not that the watch contains a camera.

July 2026 reports interpreted iOS 27 references to an unreleased wearable code-named B790 as evidence of Visual Intelligence-related work. The code does not identify B790 as an Apple Watch, and the product has not been announced. It could refer to AirPods, glasses, a pendant, development hardware or another prototype. Treat it as weak evidence of an unreleased visual-AI wearable, not confirmation of a new camera watch.

How to evaluate a future camera-watch claim
A stronger report should identify the product specifically as an Apple Watch and provide more than a software string or unnamed concept. Look for:
- A named source with a reliable Apple hardware record.
- Specific camera placement, sensor details and intended use.
- Evidence of engineering validation, production trials or supply-chain activity.
- A release window acknowledged by Apple, not merely an internal target.
- Confirmation in Apple documentation, regulatory filings or an official announcement.
Until those signals appear, do not treat claims about Series 12, Ultra 4 or a 2027 camera watch as established fact.
What current buyers should do
Do not buy an Apple Watch expecting camera-based Visual Intelligence. Choose a current model for health and fitness tracking, notifications, apps, cellular options and Apple Intelligence features that work with a compatible iPhone. If hands-free camera AI is the priority, camera-equipped smart glasses are a currently available category, while camera AirPods remain a reported development rather than a confirmed product. Waiting is the sensible option for anyone specifically seeking an Apple-made visual-AI wearable.
Third-party accessories such as Wristcam demonstrate that camera functionality can be attached to an Apple Watch, but an accessory is not the same as a camera integrated into Apple’s case, software and privacy architecture.
