Check it here: on your Apple Watch, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Maximum Capacity. That percentage estimates how much charge the battery can hold compared with when it was new. It is not a forecast of how many hours remain today, nor a direct measure of charging speed.
For the best long-term results, keep Optimized Battery Charging or Optimized Charge Limit enabled, avoid sustained heat, and investigate power-hungry use before assuming the battery has failed. A lower percentage is normal chemical aging; the practical question is whether your watch still lasts and behaves reliably.
Battery health, battery life and battery lifespan are different

A watch at 90% Maximum Capacity can outlast one at 98% if the latter uses cellular streaming, GPS, speaker audio or an Always On display more heavily.
How to check Apple Watch battery health
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Health.
- Read Maximum Capacity.

How to read the percentage
- 100%: capacity comparable with a new battery.
- High 90s: ordinary for a relatively new or lightly aged watch.
- 80s: noticeable aging may exist, but the watch can remain entirely usable.
- Below 80%: runtime may be materially shorter; service may be worth considering, but this is not an automatic replacement rule.
- “Battery Needs Service”: treat the warning and your actual symptoms as more important than the number alone.
Maximum Capacity is an estimate. It can move gradually, change in steps or be recalculated after a software update. A one-point change does not prove that a particular charging session caused damage.
Monitor real-world runtime before diagnosing a fault
Judge performance over at least two ordinary days rather than one morning. Record:
- Percentage when removing the watch from the charger, at lunch, at bedtime and before charging.
- Whether Always On, cellular, GPS workouts, sleep tracking or speaker audio were used.
- Workout duration and type, notification volume and frequently refreshing complications.
- Whether the iPhone was nearby, the signal was weak, the environment was hot or cold, and which cable and adapter were used.
- Whether the watch was recently updated.

A simple comparison test
- Fully charge the watch and restart it.
- Keep the paired iPhone nearby where practical.
- For one test day, avoid a long GPS workout and cellular streaming.
- Note the battery after 8, 12 and 24 hours, then repeat once.
- Compare those results with your normal routine.
This is not a laboratory measurement. It helps separate unusually demanding use from persistent idle drain.
Use Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit
Optimized Battery Charging learns your routine and can hold the watch around 75–80% when it expects a long time on the charger, finishing near the time you normally remove it. Optimized Charge Limit can also adjust the ceiling dynamically. Details are in Apple’s battery guidance.

Turn optimization on
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Battery, then Battery Health.
- Turn on Optimized Battery Charging or Optimized Charge Limit.
Apple says Optimized Charge Limit requires watchOS 10 or later and is available on Apple Watch SE and later, Series 6 and later, and Ultra and later. On Series 9 or later and any Apple Watch Ultra, Optimized Battery Charging is always on. Feature labels and behavior vary by model and watchOS. On SE, Series 6, Series 7 and Series 8, disabling Optimized Battery Charging also disables Optimized Charge Limit.
The feature relies on familiar routines. Location Services, System Customization and Significant Locations & Routes can help identify them; Apple says this location information is not sent to Apple for this feature.
Charge fully when you actually need to
With the watch connected, tap the charging screen, tap the green or yellow charging icon and choose Charge to Full Now. Temporarily use Turn Off Until Tomorrow or Turn Off for a trip, ultramarathon or day without charger access. Routinely disabling optimization increases time at a high state of charge and can reduce longevity.

For most Apple Watch models, Apple specifies 32°–95°F (0°–35°C) for use and −4°–113°F (−20°–45°C) for storage. Apple Watch Ultra and later can be worn from −4°–130°F (−20°–55°C), but charging remains 32°–95°F (0°–35°C). See Apple’s temperature guidance.
- Charge in a ventilated place, not under bedding or in direct sun.
- Do not leave the watch or adapter in a hot car.
- Let the watch cool after a long outdoor workout before charging.
- Stop charging if it becomes uncomfortably hot and let it cool.
- Expect charging pauses, dimming, closed apps or restricted functions when thermal protection activates.
Cold can temporarily shorten runtime and increase battery impedance without proving permanent damage. A red thermometer or repeated overheating, especially while idle, warrants service investigation.

Fix today’s battery life without chasing myths
Low Power Mode
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the battery-percentage button.
- Turn on Low Power Mode.
It reduces or disables some background, sensor and display activity and turns off automatically when the watch charges above 80%. It is primarily a runtime tool, not a chemical-longevity treatment. See Apple’s feature details.
Always On display
Open Settings → Display & Brightness → Always On and turn it off when extra runtime matters.
GPS, cellular and audio
For supported models with watchOS 9.1 or later, Settings → Workout → Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings can extend long outdoor workouts while Low Power Mode is active. It reduces route and measurement frequency and is available on Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 8 and later, and Ultra and later.
Cellular radios consume more power than Bluetooth, particularly with a weak signal. Keep the iPhone nearby when possible. Speaker audio is more demanding than listening through AirPods or another Bluetooth device. Also test excessive notifications, navigation, streaming, rapidly refreshing complications and a stuck third-party app rather than deleting everything blindly.

Apple recommends the magnetic charger supplied with the watch; MagSafe Duo and compatible third-party chargers can also work. For fastest charging, use the USB-C Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable and a USB-C Power Delivery adapter. Some fast-charging models require an 18W-or-greater USB-C adapter. On watchOS 26, Battery settings can show Slow Charger when the setup could be improved. That message does not by itself mean either device is defective. A higher-wattage adapter cannot restore a chemically aged battery; the watch controls how much power it accepts.

- Center the magnetic connector on the watch back.
- Clean and dry both charging surfaces.
- Inspect the cable for damage.
- Try a dedicated USB-C Power Delivery adapter instead of a computer, car port or overloaded hub.
- Use the cable supplied with the current watch, if available.
- Move the setup to a moderate-temperature, ventilated location.
- Restart the watch and check for a Slow Charger message.
- If charging remains unreliable, follow Apple’s charging-speed troubleshooting and arrange service.
When battery drain follows a watchOS update
Apple says indexing, syncing and other background work after an update can temporarily reduce battery life. Wait several days before judging the result: Apple’s guidance.
- Charge normally; do not repeatedly force 100%.
- Restart the watch and let iPhone–watch syncing finish.
- Check cellular, GPS, audio and app activity.
- Install a subsequent corrective update if Apple releases one.
- Only after simpler checks fail, consider unpairing and re-pairing.
- Contact Apple sooner if the watch becomes hot, shuts down unexpectedly or drains rapidly while idle.
Recalibration can also change the displayed estimate without an equivalent overnight loss of chemical capacity. Apple documents recalibration for Series 4 and 5 on watchOS 9.0 or later, Series 6 44mm on watchOS 9.4 or later, and Series 7 and SE (2nd generation) after updating to watchOS 26 or later: Apple’s recalibration notes.
When Apple Watch battery service is worth it
Arrange service when Battery Health says Battery Needs Service, the watch cannot complete your normal day despite reasonable settings, it shuts down unexpectedly, becomes unusually hot, or still will not charge after checking alignment, cable, adapter and temperature.
Apple’s repair page says battery service is provided at no extra charge when capacity drops below 80% under applicable warranty or AppleCare terms. Confirm the terms for your model and country at Apple Watch service. Out-of-warranty estimates vary by model, location, inspection, tax, shipping and parts availability; AppleCare fees and deductibles are listed at Apple’s fee page.
Service or replacement?
Replacement may make more sense when the watch is several generations old, no longer supports the watchOS version you need, lacks desired sensors or cellular capability, or has other damage. Compare the complete service estimate with the price and useful life of a current model, not just the battery line item.

- You do not need scheduled 0% discharge or “calibration” cycles.
- Occasional charging to 100% is normal; prolonged high charge and heat are the longevity concerns.
- There is no requirement to keep the watch exactly between 20% and 80% every day.

- Do not replace a watch solely because Maximum Capacity is below an arbitrary percentage.
