The federal case names Apple Watch Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band. A University of Notre Dame study found PFAS, including PFHxA, in some smartwatch and fitness-tracker bands, but its public summary does not identify every positive sample by brand and model. On March 16, 2026, a federal judge allowed several consumer-protection claims against Apple to continue while dismissing others with permission to amend. That was a pleading-stage ruling, not a finding that the bands are dangerous or that Apple is liable.
What the Apple Watch lawsuit alleges
Cavalier et al. v. Apple Inc. was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on January 21, 2025. The original complaint names the Apple Watch Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band.
The plaintiffs allege that Apple marketed the bands for everyday health and fitness use while failing to disclose alleged PFAS content, including perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA). The complaint seeks class certification, damages, restitution, injunctive relief, and other remedies. Those are allegations in a complaint, not established facts or a product-safety judgment.
In a first amended complaint, plaintiffs say testing of one new black Sport Band bought from Apple in March 2025 found 1,020.114 nanograms per gram (ng/g) of PFHxA. That is a plaintiff-commissioned result described in a litigation filing—not an independently adjudicated finding or a representative test of every Apple band. What PFAS and PFHxA are
PFAS means per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a large family of fluorinated chemicals. Many are highly persistent in the environment, which is why they are often called “forever chemicals.” PFHxA (perfluorohexanoic acid) is one member of that family.
PFAS should not be treated as a single substance. Individual compounds can differ in toxicity, persistence, exposure routes, and regulatory treatment. A finding of PFHxA is therefore not proof that every PFAS has the same health effect, nor that a particular band delivers a harmful dose.
What the Notre Dame study actually found
A December 2024 University of Notre Dame study tested 22 smartwatch and fitness-tracker bands bought in the United States from multiple brands and price levels. Researchers used particle-induced gamma-ray emission to screen for total fluorine and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry to identify targeted PFAS.
| Finding | Result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| High total fluorine | 15 of 22 bands | Fluorine was elevated, but total fluorine does not identify a specific PFAS or prove exposure. |
| PFHxA detected | 9 of 22 bands | Some samples contained measurable PFHxA. |
| Reported concentration | Several samples above 1,000 parts per billion PFHxA | A laboratory result in tested samples, not a dose absorbed by wearers. |
| Brand and model detail | Not fully identified in the public summary | The summary cannot establish that every Apple Sport, Nike Sport, or Ocean Band tested positive. |
The researchers reported that fluoroelastomer construction was associated with positive findings and that higher-priced bands were more likely to show elevated fluorine or PFHxA. They also said more work is needed to determine how much PFAS users actually absorb. Notre Dame’s study summary and the American Chemical Society summary do not establish illness in Apple Watch users.

Does this prove Apple Watch bands are dangerous?
No. The evidence supports several different levels of certainty:
Established by the published study
- Some tested smartwatch bands contained measurable fluorine and PFHxA.
- Fluoroelastomer bands were associated with positive findings.
- These products are worn against skin for extended periods.
Scientifically plausible but unmeasured
- Chemicals could potentially transfer from a band to skin.
- Sweat, heat, friction, lotions, damaged surfaces, and long contact could affect transfer.
- Repeated contact warrants exposure research.
Not established
- That every Apple Sport, Nike Sport, or Ocean Band contains harmful PFAS levels.
- That users absorb a medically significant dose from an Apple band.
- That these bands cause cancer, infertility, immune disease, or another specific illness.
- That an untested third-party replacement eliminates chemical risk.
Possible dermal transfer is not the same as demonstrated absorption, and absorption is not the same as proof of disease. The study did not measure the dose absorbed by Apple Watch wearers.
Why fluoroelastomer is relevant
Apple lists fluoroelastomer for the Ocean Band, Sport Band, and Nike Sport Band. The material is valued for resistance to sweat, oils, water, and repeated wear. Its name is a useful clue when evaluating the lawsuit, but it is not a complete chemical analysis of a finished band. Conversely, a band labeled silicone, nylon, or polyester should not automatically be called PFAS-free without manufacturer documentation or testing.
Apple’s material guide lists the Solo Loop as silicone; Sport Loop as woven nylon, polyester, and elastane; Milanese Loop as stainless steel; Braided Solo Loop as polyester yarn with stainless steel; and other bands as leather, polyester, nylon, titanium, or stainless steel depending on model and edition. Apple’s material and wearing guidance is the reference for those descriptions.

Apple’s position
Apple says its Watch bands are safe for users to wear. It also says it performs its own testing, works with independent laboratories, and is working to phase out PFAS from products and manufacturing processes. Its environmental program describes chemical assessment and restricted-substance controls, but the public pages reviewed do not identify which current Watch bands are PFAS-free or admit that the named bands contain PFAS. See Apple’s environmental policy.
Those positions can coexist: a company may consider a material safe in ordinary use while still seeking to remove fluorinated chemistry for environmental or supply-chain reasons.
What the court decided on March 16, 2026
The Northern District of California denied Apple’s motion to dismiss several claims, including fraudulent concealment or omission, negligent misrepresentation, unjust enrichment, and California Unfair Competition Law claims. The court accepted the complaint’s factual allegations as true only for purposes of that motion and found that plaintiffs plausibly alleged economic injury—for example, that they would not have bought the bands or would have paid less had they known of the alleged PFHxA risk.
The judge dismissed fraudulent-misrepresentation and implied-warranty claims as then pleaded, with leave to amend. The order did not:

Should you stop wearing a named band?
There is no evidence in these materials that continuing to wear one creates an established immediate poisoning or cancer risk. Owners can make a precautionary choice based on comfort and concern:
- If you are comfortable, continue normal use while monitoring your skin.
- If you are worried, temporarily switch to a band made from a different material.
- Keep the band, watch, and skin clean and dry, especially after exercise.
- Wear it securely but not tightly; rubbing and trapped moisture can irritate skin.
- Stop wearing it and seek medical advice for persistent redness, swelling, itching, blistering, or other symptoms.
- Ask Apple for material information for your exact model, color, production period, or replacement.
Apple notes that tightness, rubbing, sweat, soap, sunscreen, and lotions can cause irritation. It also lists trace acrylates and methacrylates in some Watch and band components; some people are sensitive to those substances. A rash is therefore not diagnostic of PFAS exposure.

| Alternative | Potential benefit | Trade-offs and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Metal (stainless steel or titanium) | Avoids the fluoroelastomer material named in the suit. | Can be heavier; some users are nickel-sensitive; certain metal bands are unsuitable for water or workouts. |
| Nylon, woven, or textile | Often more breathable and avoids fluoroelastomer. | Can absorb sweat, dry slowly, stain, or wear; textile does not prove PFAS-free status. |
| Silicone | Apple identifies Solo Loop as silicone. | “Silicone” is not a universal PFAS-free certification, especially for third-party products. |
| Leather or synthetic leather | Avoids fluoroelastomer. | May be unsuitable for water or exercise; dyes, coatings, adhesives, and hardware add other considerations. Availability varies. |
Apple announced a move away from leather materials, so availability depends on the watch model and seller. Apple’s announcement explains that change.

What to check before buying a replacement
- Look for a specific material declaration rather than “non-toxic” or “chemical-free” language.
- Prefer a manufacturer PFAS statement or credible independent testing when available.
- Check seller identity, warranty, and exact Apple Watch case-size compatibility.
- Do not assume a cheaper generic band is safer; the Notre Dame study found fluorine across brands and price points.
Changing material can reduce concern about fluoroelastomer, but it cannot prove that a replacement is free of every PFAS or other substance of concern.
What remains unknown
- The complete brand-and-model results for all 22 study bands.
- Actual dermal transfer and absorbed dose from Apple bands during ordinary wear.
- Whether formulations vary by year, color, factory, region, or supplier.
- Whether current production differs from bands tested in 2024 or 2025.
- Whether the plaintiff-commissioned result can be reproduced independently.
- The case’s ultimate outcome, including any class-certification or liability decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Apple Watch bands proven to cause cancer?
No. The lawsuit alleges undisclosed PFAS and raises an exposure question, but neither the Notre Dame study nor the March 2026 court order proves that Apple bands caused cancer or another disease.
Which Apple Watch bands are named in the lawsuit?
The original complaint names the Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band.
Is the lawsuit still active?
Partly. On March 16, 2026, the court allowed several concealment, misrepresentation, unjust-enrichment, and California consumer-law claims to proceed, while dismissing two claims with leave to amend.
