Choose the Apple Watch SE 3 for the lowest new-device price and core smartwatch functions. Choose the Apple Watch Ultra 3 only if its two-day battery potential, 49mm titanium case, brighter display, advanced GPS, diving support or Action button solves a real problem.
This US-focused guide compares the current lineup as of August 16, 2026. Prices, cellular service, Blood Oxygen, emergency functions and some health features vary by country, carrier, regulatory status and software version.
Which Apple Watch should you buy?
| Buyer | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most adults | Series 11 | Modern thin design, brighter and larger display, ECG and other advanced health features, faster charging and more battery without Ultra bulk. |
| Lowest upfront price | SE 3 | Provides notifications, calls, workouts, sleep tracking and safety tools at the lowest current starting price. |
| Long battery and outdoor use | Ultra 3 | Up to 42 hours rated battery, 49mm titanium construction, 3,000-nit display, dual-frequency GPS, navigation controls and diving support. |
| Child or older relative | SE 3 (usually cellular) | Family Setup support and essential safety features, provided your carrier supports managed Apple Watch service. |
| Small wrist or discreet wear | SE 3 or Series 11 | The 49mm Ultra 3 can be heavy and visually oversized; try it on before buying. |
| Scuba diver or endurance athlete | Ultra 3 | 100-meter water rating, recreational scuba support to 40 meters, brighter screen, longer battery and specialist outdoor hardware. |
All three use the same current watchOS platform when supported. The biggest differences are hardware: screen, sensors, battery, materials, GPS, water capability and physical controls.
Prices and configurations
Published US reference prices are:
| Model | GPS | GPS + Cellular |
|---|---|---|
| SE 3, 40mm | $249 | $299 |
| SE 3, 44mm | $279 | $329 |
| Series 11 aluminum, 42mm | $399 | $499 |
| Series 11 aluminum, 46mm | $429 | $529 |
| Series 11 titanium, 42mm | Not offered as GPS-only | $699 |
| Series 11 titanium, 46mm | Not offered as GPS-only | $749 |
| Ultra 3, 49mm | Cellular included | $799 |
These are MSRP/reference figures reported by MacRumors, not guaranteed sale prices. Cellular normally adds a recurring carrier charge, so compare the total cost over your ownership period. GPS models still use GPS and Wi-Fi and work away from the iPhone for some functions; cellular is for greater independence when the phone is not nearby.

Apple trade-in credit, education pricing, refurbished stock and temporary sales can change the effective price. Compare like with like: a 40mm aluminum SE 3 is not a direct value equivalent to a 49mm titanium Ultra 3. Series 11 titanium pricing also narrows the gap to Ultra 3 considerably.

SE 3 versus Series 11: the differences you will notice
Display and case
The SE 3 retains an always-on display, so it is not a fundamentally old-fashioned screen experience. Its disadvantages are the smaller viewing area, thicker bezels, lower outdoor brightness and older, thicker case design. Series 11’s 42mm and 46mm cases provide more usable screen, a wider aspect ratio and up to 2,000 nits, making text, workout metrics and notifications easier to read.

- GET HYPERTENSION NOTIFICATIONS—Did you know that Series 11 can spot signs of chronic high blood pressure? By analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart, it can notify you of possible hypertension.*
- SAFETY FEATURES—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 11 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.
Health hardware
SE 3 covers core wellness: heart-rate high/low alerts, irregular-rhythm notifications, temperature sensing, sleep stages and score, respiratory rate, activity tracking, noise monitoring, Fall Detection and Crash Detection. Series 11 adds the hardware for ECG, hypertension notifications and sleep-apnea notifications, subject to regional approval and software requirements. Neither model turns a measurement into a medical diagnosis.
Battery and charging
Series 11 is rated for up to 24 hours versus 18 for SE 3, and reaches 80% in about 30 minutes versus about 45 minutes. That difference matters for sleep tracking: Series 11 gives more margin for a short morning or shower-time charge, while SE 3 is principally a daily-charge watch.
Who should pay for Series 11?
Pay the premium when ECG or advanced health features, a thinner case, easier outdoor readability or faster charging matter. Basic watchOS functions—notifications, timers, music controls, calls, workouts and safety tools—are not dramatically different.

Series 11 versus Ultra 3
Size, weight and materials
Series 11 comes in 42mm or 46mm aluminum, or titanium configurations. Ultra 3 is a 49mm titanium watch with a larger physical footprint and more weight. MacRumors lists, for example, a 26.3g 40mm SE 3, a 37.8g 46mm aluminum Series 11 and approximately 61.6g for the natural-titanium Ultra 3 (case weights vary by finish and exclude bands): published dimensions and weights. Try the Ultra on if you currently wear a 40mm or 41mm watch or sleep in your watch.
Battery and screen
Ultra 3’s up-to-42-hour rating is the only one here that plausibly supports two-day use for many owners. Its 3,000-nit flat display is easier to read in harsh sunlight than Series 11’s 2,000 nits. Both use fast charging, but Series 11 reaches 80% sooner.

Ultra 3 adds dual-frequency GPS, compass-based navigation features, offline maps support, Backtrack, waypoints, an Action button and a siren. It is rated to 100 meters and supports compatible recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. Series 11 is rated to 50 meters and is intended for swimming and similar shallow-water activity, not scuba or high-speed water sports.

Who should pay for Ultra 3?
Choose it for long races, hiking and backcountry navigation, diving, sailing or high-speed water sports, frequent time away from chargers, or a genuine preference for its physical controls and titanium construction. Do not buy it merely because it is the most expensive or has every feature.
SE 3 versus Ultra 3: value utility versus specialist hardware
Both provide notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, safety functions, temperature sensing and the same broad watchOS experience. Ultra 3’s premium buys battery, brightness, materials, GPS, water depth capability, dust resistance, navigation and controls—not a completely different everyday smartwatch. For a casual user, the SE 3 can deliver nearly all of the functions used each day at a fraction of the price. For a diver or multi-day adventurer, those specialist differences are decisive.

Fitness, water and outdoor use in practice
The SE 3 is fully capable for ordinary walking, gym sessions, running, cycling and pool swimming. Series 11 is the better all-round fitness watch when you want its brighter screen, longer battery and advanced health sensors. Ultra 3 is specialized for long races, hiking, trail use, navigation, diving and high-speed water sports.
Best Value
- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Take an ECG anytime* and get alerts for a high and low heart rate or an irregular rhythm*—so you can stay closer to your heart. You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*
- KNOW YOUR SLEEP SCORE—With advanced sleep tracking, Series 11 gives you a daily sleep score. It’s an easy way to help measure and understand the quality of your sleep, so you can make it more restorative.
SE 3 and Series 11 are rated to 50 meters under ISO 22810:2010. Ultra 3 is rated to 100 meters and supports recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. Water resistance is not permanent: age, impacts, chemicals, heat and seal wear can reduce it. None of these ratings guarantee protection from every liquid-related failure.
Cellular, Family Setup and compatibility
Cellular hardware does not make an Apple Watch an Android-compatible phone. Every model requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Cellular also requires a compatible carrier, usually a recurring plan, and may have international-roaming limits. Emergency SOS and satellite-related functions have geographic, subscription, line-of-sight and connectivity requirements.
Family Setup can let a child or older relative use a managed watch without their own iPhone, but carrier support, an Apple Account and family configuration are required. The SE 3 is often the sensible Family Setup choice because it minimizes hardware cost; confirm cellular availability before ordering.
Buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Blood Oxygen is universal: availability has been affected by regional and legal restrictions. Verify the exact watch sold in your country.
- Buying Ultra for status: its size, weight and price are drawbacks if you only need notifications and casual workouts.
- Ignoring charging habits: SE 3 may require a stricter daily routine, especially with sleep tracking.
- Comparing unlike configurations: include case size, titanium versus aluminum, cellular hardware and the carrier plan.
- Calling health features diagnostic: ECG, temperature, hypertension, sleep-apnea and cycle features provide measurements or notifications, not a diagnosis. Apple says Cycle Tracking should not be used for birth control or diagnosis.
- Using the wrong water model: recommend Ultra 3 for supported recreational scuba; do not treat 50-meter swim ratings as dive certification.
- Assuming old bands fit: check exact case-size compatibility before reusing a band.
- Overlooking the iPhone requirement: discounted watches do not work as standalone Android accessories.
- Buying refurbished without checks: verify battery health, activation-lock status, warranty, return policy and regional feature availability.
- Assuming Ultra means more years of updates: future watchOS support is not guaranteed indefinitely for any model.
Decision tree
- If the lowest new-device price is the priority and you do not need ECG or advanced health features, choose SE 3.
- If you want the best everyday balance of size, display, health sensors, battery and charging, choose Series 11.
- If you need two-day battery potential, a 49mm titanium case, maximum brightness, dual-frequency GPS, diving support or an Action button, choose Ultra 3.
- If you are unsure, buy Series 11—unless your budget or wrist size clearly points to SE 3.
Before checkout, confirm the iPhone requirement, carrier plan, regional health features, case fit, band compatibility and the live price for your exact configuration.
