Short answer: Apple’s $20 million settlement was real, but it is not an open claim opportunity in 2026. The deadline to confirm payment information or choose a payment method was April 10, 2025. The official instructions do not show a reopened process for people who were never identified as class members. If you received a notice but never received money, check watchsettlement.com and contact the settlement administrator at 1-844-933-4042.
What the Apple Watch settlement was about
The case was Smith et al. v. Apple Inc., case number 4:21-cv-09527, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs alleged that battery swelling in certain older Apple Watches could cause problems such as screen separation and asserted consumer-protection and warranty violations.
Apple denied the allegations, denied that the covered watches had the claimed defect, and denied wrongdoing. The settlement resolved the lawsuit without a trial finding that Apple was liable; it was not an admission of fault. The court-authorized settlement website is watchsettlement.com. It is not an Apple support or warranty page, so type the address yourself rather than trusting an unsolicited link.
Which watches and owners were covered?
The settlement covered these models:
- First-generation Apple Watch (the original model)
- Apple Watch Series 1
- Apple Watch Series 2
- Apple Watch Series 3
Series 4 and later were not listed as covered devices. A model alone did not establish eligibility. The stated class definition generally required all of the following:

- You were a natural person living in the United States.
- You owned or previously owned a covered watch for personal or household use.
- You reported a potentially battery-swelling-related issue to Apple in the United States.
- The relevant ownership and report fell within April 24, 2015, through February 6, 2024.
- Apple’s records reflected the report.
Current ownership was not required, so selling, giving away, or discarding a watch did not automatically exclude a person. Conversely, a business owner, corporation, repair shop, recipient, or later purchaser was not automatically included. The eligibility definition and dates are described in the settlement FAQs.
Was a claim form required?
No conventional claim form was required for people identified through Apple’s records. The administrator was expected to send an email or postcard to an eligible class member, who could then confirm or update payment information through the settlement website.

This distinction matters:
- Eligibility identification: based in part on Apple’s records of a qualifying report.
- Payment selection: confirming contact details and choosing how to receive the payment.
- New claim filing: the published process did not provide a general self-attestation route for someone who was not identified.
How much was the payment?
The settlement fund was $20 million gross. The FAQs estimated approximately $20 per covered watch, but the actual amount could be lower or higher depending on participation and allocation. Payments were capped at $50 per covered watch; $50 was not guaranteed.
The fund was also subject to deductions such as administration and notice costs, attorneys’ fees, litigation expenses, and service awards. Individual payments therefore should not be equated with a guaranteed share of the entire $20 million.

Payment methods offered during the process
The notice listed these methods:
- Physical check
- Electronic check
- ACH transfer or direct deposit (available through online submission)
- Virtual prepaid Visa or Mastercard
If no method was selected by the deadline, the administrator could use valid existing email or mailing information to send an electronic payment or physical check. These were the methods offered during the claims process, not an assurance that a new applicant can select one today.

The official pages do not publish a new 2026 claim deadline or a reopened claims period. Do not assume that owning a qualifying watch now creates a late-claim right.

What to do if you were notified but never got paid
- Search email, spam folders, postal mail, and financial records for the settlement notice, confirmation number, or payment.
- Go directly to https://watchsettlement.com/, not to a third-party settlement site.
- Review the administrator’s Important Documents page.
- Call the administrator at 1-844-933-4042.
- Ask whether you were identified as a class member, whether a payment was issued, whether it was returned or went uncashed, whether contact details can still be corrected, and whether a replacement-payment process remains available.
The site lists interim and second interim post-distribution accounting documents, but those listings alone do not establish the status of every individual payment or whether a replacement check remains available. Obtain that answer from the current documents or the administrator.

- Never provide an Apple ID password, install software, or grant remote access to receive a settlement payment.
- Do not pay an upfront fee. Legitimate settlement payments are not released by charging you first.
- Verify an unexpected message by calling 1-844-933-4042, not a number or link supplied only in that message.

What staying in or leaving the class meant
Remaining in the settlement generally released claims against Apple arising from or related to the allegations in the case. Opting out meant receiving no settlement payment but preserving any right you might have had to pursue related claims independently, at your own expense. Objecting allowed a class member to challenge the settlement but did not create a right to a larger personal payment. These are general descriptions, not individualized legal advice.
Bottom line for a 2026 reader
The settlement covered U.S. personal-use owners of the original Apple Watch through Series 3 who had a potentially related issue reflected in Apple’s records. The payment-selection deadline was April 10, 2025, so there is no ordinary new-claim route shown on the official website. If you received a legitimate notice or suspect a payment was lost, use the official site and administrator phone number to check your specific status; do not rely on ownership alone or on an unsolicited message.
