Short answer: choose Clockology for maximum visual control, Facer for a huge catalog and branded designs, Watchsmith for information-rich complications, and Buddywatch for curated native-face setups. Treat WatchMaker as a conditional option until you confirm its current Apple Watch implementation. If reliability matters most, Apple’s own faces with carefully chosen complications remain the safest choice.
These apps do not all create permanent, native watchOS faces. Some share Apple-supported face configurations, some supply complications, and some display an app-based clock that can be suspended. That distinction determines whether your design remains available after a notification, navigation, or a closed app.
First, understand the three kinds of “watch face” app
Native watchOS faces
Native faces appear in Apple’s Watch app and behave like Apple’s own designs: they remain in your face collection, support the normal complication slots and face switching, and follow watchOS display behavior such as Always-On where the model and face support it.
Shared native configurations
A third-party service can distribute a customized Apple face file containing supported colors, images, complications, and settings. Apple documents this sharing model at its ClockKit guide. You still add the result through Apple’s Watch app, and missing complication apps may be requested.

App-based clocks
An app can draw a clock full-screen without replacing the watchOS face system. It may look completely custom, but the app can be backgrounded by notifications, navigation, audio playback, covering the display, or removing the watch. The normal Apple face then appears, and you may need to reopen the clock app.
That is why “fully custom Apple Watch face” is too broad a description. Always check whether a design is native, a shared configuration, a complication layout, or an app clock.
Quick comparison
| App | Best for | Native-face behavior | Free and premium signals | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clockology | Deep visual customization and animated designs | Many showcase clocks run inside Clockology | Free download; U.S. listing displays Clockology+ options | Requires periodic return-to-clock setup and can be interrupted |
| Facer | Catalog breadth, social browsing, branded designs | Sends compatible designs into Apple’s Watch workflow; behavior varies by face | Free download with free and premium designs | Compatibility and quality vary across a very large catalog |
| Watchsmith | Data-heavy native faces and complications | Works primarily through complications and Apple face layouts | Confirm current limits and subscription in the live listing | Not a decorative full-screen face library |
| Buddywatch | Curated discovery and sharing | Primarily native Apple face configurations | Verify current availability and premium features | Depends on linked faces and required companion apps |
| WatchMaker | Cross-platform design ecosystems | Apple Watch behavior must be checked design by design | Verify current Apple listing and pricing | Features on Wear OS may not translate to watchOS |
1. Clockology: best for serious customization
Clockology is the strongest choice when the display itself is the project. Its editor supports custom text, images, animated or video layers, date and time, weather, HealthKit activity data, calendar information, charts, battery data, and location-based golden-hour information. The feature set is described in the U.S. App Store listing, and designs can be imported or shared.
The trade-off is fundamental: the most elaborate designs are app-based clocks, not unrestricted native watchOS faces. Clockology says native watch faces remain open continuously, while its clock files require the watch to return to Clockology after a set period and to be awakened at least once per hour. In the watch, open Settings > General > Return to Clock and choose After 1 hour. The app documents this behavior, along with interruptions, at its FAQ.
Clockology setup
- Install Clockology on the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Select a clock or create one, then sync it to the watch.
- On the watch, open Settings > General > Return to Clock.
- Choose After 1 hour if you want the clock to stay visible longer.
- Wake the watch at least once per hour.
Clockology’s current FAQ lists minimum requirements of iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, and watchOS 10; the App Store listing states iOS 16.2 or later and watchOS 10 or later. Confirm the live listing for your region and model. Health, weather, and location layers require permissions, and the App Store listing says some weather and image-strip features require Clockology+.

Choose it if: you want animated, photographic, or highly personalized screens and accept extra maintenance. Skip it if: you need a face that remains available with no app running.
2. Facer: best for catalog breadth and branded designs
Facer is built for browsing. The company advertises more than 500,000 designs across its multi-platform library, including creator work, free and premium designs, and licensed collections. Categories include analog, digital, hybrid, fitness, utility, sports, astronomy, characters, and pop culture. See Facer’s site and its U.S. App Store listing.

Facer’s practical checks
- Confirm your case size, watch generation, and watchOS version on the face’s detail page.
- Check which complication families the design uses and whether those apps are installed.
- Verify that the design remains in Apple’s face gallery after closing Facer.
- Test one free design before paying for premium access.
Facer is a free download with in-app purchases. The public listing does not establish one universal subscription price, so check the current offer in your storefront. App Store reviews include complaints about premium pricing and compatibility discovered after subscribing; those are user reports, not independently verified findings.

Choose it if: you enjoy visual discovery, licensed brands, and frequent style changes. Skip it if: you want a small, tightly tested catalog or dislike subscription decisions.
3. Watchsmith: best for information-rich native faces
Watchsmith should be understood as a complication and face-configuration tool, not a replacement full-screen face engine. Its appeal is turning Apple’s native face layouts into useful dashboards for calendars, weather, fitness, timers, battery, and other data. Users who prefer different information at different times of day should investigate whether the current version still supports scheduled complication content.

4. Buddywatch: best for curated native-face discovery
Buddywatch is most useful as a discovery and sharing service. Rather than designing every pixel, you browse curated looks and recreate them with Apple’s own face templates and complications. That makes it approachable for beginners who want inspiration without learning a visual editor.

Shared configurations can depend on a particular face family, case size, or companion complication app. Before relying on a setup, verify that the current Buddywatch app is maintained, that the link still opens, and that any required complication apps are available. Also check whether an account or premium feature is now required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

WatchMaker is worth considering for people who move between smartwatch platforms and value a broad design ecosystem. Its strength on another platform does not prove equivalent Apple Watch functionality, however. Confirm in the current Apple listing whether a design becomes a native face, a complication, or an app-based clock, and compare Apple-specific catalog size with the Wear OS ecosystem.
Do not subscribe on the assumption that a design working as a true face elsewhere will work the same way on watchOS. If current Apple behavior cannot be confirmed, treat WatchMaker as an experiment rather than a definitive recommendation.
Choose it if: cross-platform continuity is important and you are willing to check each design. Skip it if: you want the simplest Apple-only setup.

The most reliable alternative: Apple faces plus complications
For notifications, navigation, Always-On behavior, and predictable battery management, start in Apple’s Watch app. Add a native face, then place only the third-party complications you actually use. A discovery app can supply the layout idea or shared configuration without keeping a custom clock in the foreground.
This approach cannot reproduce every animated or photographic design, but it avoids the central failure mode of app clocks: suspension. Visual design and data widgets are separate. A face can look custom while its weather, activity, heart-rate, calendar, battery, timer, or world-clock information still comes from standard complication slots. Check update frequency and whether tapping a complication opens its source app; data may be cached rather than continuously refreshed.
How to install a shared native face
- Install the face or discovery app on your iPhone.
- Choose a face compatible with your watch model and case size.
- Tap the app’s Add, Send, or Share control.
- Allow Apple Watch or the Watch app to open.
- Add the face to your face collection.
- Configure colors and complications in Apple’s Watch app.
- Close the third-party app and confirm the face remains in the gallery.
Permissions, battery, and privacy
Request only the permissions that match the features you use. Clockology says HealthKit access may be needed for activity or health layers, while location access supports weather and golden-hour information. Its App Store privacy label includes usage data. Facer and other social catalogs may also involve accounts, analytics, or cloud synchronization; read each current App Store privacy label and privacy policy rather than assuming two apps handle data alike.
There is no defensible universal battery percentage for these apps. Animated, frequently updating, health-, weather-, or location-based designs can require more work than a simple native face. Treat that as a practical consideration, not a measured benchmark.
