They pictured a thinner Apple Watch and a possible magnetic band system. Apple later launched the Series 10 with a thinner case and larger display, but kept compatibility with older bands.
What the April 2024 render actually showed
Published on April 19, 2024, the images were created by Sam Kohl of AppleTrack and Shea Cohen of ConceptCentral. They visualized a possible anniversary redesign using existing leaks, rumors and the creators’ own predictions; there is no evidence in the original coverage that Apple supplied or authenticated them. Calling them rumor-based concept renders is more accurate than calling them confirmed leaked product images or CAD drawings. BGR’s report described a slimmer watch and a possible redesigned, potentially magnetic band attachment.
Rumor coverage also used names such as “Apple Watch X” and “Series X” for the anticipated tenth-anniversary model. Those were labels for a rumored product, not its eventual official name. A render can suggest proportions, but perspective artwork cannot establish exact dimensions, internal layout or connector design.
What the underlying rumors claimed
BGR attributed the broader redesign reporting to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The reported possibilities included a thinner case, a reworked band mechanism that could free internal space, and a more power-efficient display. A magnetic connector was discussed as a possibility—not a confirmed specification. The freed space was speculated to allow a larger battery or other components. Coverage also raised possible hypertension and sleep-apnea-related features; those possibilities should not be confused with features Apple had committed to ship.

The band rumor mattered beyond appearance: a new connector could have left owners needing replacement bands. That practical consequence made compatibility a more useful test of the prediction than the render’s visual resemblance alone.
What Apple launched instead
Apple announced Apple Watch Series 10 on September 9, 2024, and made it available September 20. The finished watch was nearly 10 percent thinner than Series 7, 8 and 9, and came in 42mm and 46mm case sizes. Apple described a wider aspect ratio, more rounded corners and a larger display with up to 9 percent more active screen area than those earlier models. Its wide-angle OLED display was rated by Apple as up to 40 percent brighter when viewed at an angle. These are Apple’s comparisons and claims, not measurements of the concept images. | Render-era suggestion | What shipped in Series 10 |
|---|---|
| Thinner case | Broadly matched: Apple said it was nearly 10 percent thinner than Series 7, 8 and 9. |
| Larger or more efficient display | A larger display shipped, with up to 9 percent more active area than Series 7, 8 and 9 and wide-angle OLED technology. |
| Magnetic band attachment | Did not ship; Apple retained compatibility with older bands. |
| “Apple Watch X” name | Did not ship under that name; Apple called it Apple Watch Series 10. |
| Exact cuff-free blood-pressure readings | Not announced as a Series 10 feature; Apple’s launch specifications do not confirm this capability. |
The Series 10 remained recognizably within Apple’s established rectangular watch design rather than adopting a wholly new exterior form. It was offered in aluminum and titanium, with GPS and cellular configurations. Apple rated battery life at up to 18 hours. It also said 15 minutes of charging could provide up to eight hours of normal use and that charging to 80 percent took about 30 minutes. These are manufacturer ratings, not a promise of identical results for every wearer or configuration.
The clearest miss: a new band system
Apple confirmed that older 41mm and 45mm bands work with the new 42mm and 46mm cases, respectively; new 42mm and 46mm bands also work with older compatible cases. The rumored magnetic attachment did not become the Series 10 connection system. Owners therefore did not need to replace a compatible band just because they bought the new watch. For unusual third-party bands, check the maker’s stated case-size compatibility rather than assuming fit from appearance alone.

Health rumors versus the released features
Series 10 introduced sleep-apnea notifications, but the feature is not a diagnosis, sleep study or blood-pressure monitor. Apple says the watch accelerometer tracks wrist movements associated with interruptions in normal breathing patterns. The Health app records “Breathing Disturbances”; the algorithm assesses data over 30 days and can notify a user when it identifies signs associated with sleep apnea. Apple describes this as a way to identify signs, not to diagnose the condition. People with symptoms should consult a healthcare professional rather than rely on a notification or its absence.
Availability depends on regulatory authorization and other eligibility requirements, including region, language, age and compatible device configuration. Apple said the feature was available in more than 150 countries and regions following authorizations, including the United States, European Union and Japan. It also came to Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 through watchOS 11, so it was not exclusive to Series 10. See Apple’s watchOS 11 announcement and its health-feature announcement for Apple’s descriptions and qualifications. The hypertension-trending rumor was not confirmed as a Series 10 launch feature.

Should the render change an Apple Watch buying decision?
- If you own a Series 7, 8 or 9: The thinner case, larger screen and faster charging are the clearest hardware differences to weigh. Series 10’s stated battery rating remains up to 18 hours, so the redesign does not by itself promise longer rated battery life.
- If you own an older Apple Watch: The larger display and thinner case may be more noticeable, while charging and health capabilities depend on the specific older model and supported software.
- If you have compatible bands: You can keep using them with the corresponding Series 10 case size; a new band is a style or fit choice, not a requirement created by a connector redesign.
- If sleep health is your priority: Treat sleep-apnea notifications as a screening signal, not medical evaluation. Availability and eligibility vary.
The launch announcement listed a U.S. starting price of $399, but that is a starting price rather than the cost of every size, material, band or cellular configuration. Current prices and availability may differ; consult Apple’s live store for current options.
