Workout Builder creates interval sessions with distance, time, pace or heart-rate targets; the watch delivers live audio and haptic cues; and the companion app analyzes running form, records and training load afterward.
The app originally marketed these tools as Fitbit. Google now calls it Google Health, with existing Fitbit installations moving over through an update. Basic recording and many health metrics do not require a subscription, while adaptive plans, coaching and premium workout content can require Google Health Premium.
What is actually new for runners?
Pixel Watch 3 was announced on August 13, 2024, in 41mm and 45mm sizes. Its running upgrade is a connected workflow rather than one isolated feature: plan a session on the phone, execute it from the watch, then study the result in the app. Google’s launch announcement describes the core tools in detail at Google’s Pixel Watch 3 announcement.
| Feature | What it does | Where it happens | Subscription qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workout Builder | Creates runs with warmups, intervals, recoveries and cooldowns using distance, time, pace or heart-rate-zone targets | Configured in the phone app; executed on the watch | Check the current Google Health version and account |
| Live guidance | Audio and vibration announce transitions, pace deviations and heart-rate-target issues | Pixel Watch 3 | Depends on workout type and settings |
| Running-form analysis | Estimates cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation and ground-contact time | Watch sensors, reviewed in Google Health | Availability can vary by market and account |
| Running dashboard | Shows history, trends and personal records | Google Health on the phone | Current app branding is Google Health |
| Cardio Load | Estimates cardiovascular work across activity | Watch and app | Listed by Google as part of the base experience |
| Target Load | Suggests a training target using recent load and readiness | Watch and app | Availability may vary |
| Personalized coaching | Offers adaptive plans, recommended runs and coaching content | Google Health ecosystem | Generally associated with Google Health Premium |
How Workout Builder works
Workout Builder is a structured-workout creator, not a complete race-plan platform. A typical session could be:

- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
- Warmup: 10 minutes by time.
- Work intervals: four repeats of 400 meters at a pace target.
- Recovery: an easy jog between each repeat.
- Cooldown: an easy, time-based finish.
Each block can use a distance, duration, pace or heart-rate-zone goal, and repeats let you build interval sessions without manually starting every lap. The phone is the convenient place to construct the workout; the watch stores the sequence and guides you through it.
What the watch tells you during a run
Once the workout starts, Pixel Watch 3 displays progress toward the current target and can use both spoken prompts and haptic feedback. It can tell or signal you when:
- the warmup has ended;
- the next interval or recovery begins;
- you move outside the selected pace range;
- your heart rate exceeds the chosen zone; or
- it is time to cool down.
This makes the watch usable without repeatedly looking at the screen. Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models can record and guide a workout away from the phone, but connected services are more limited. LTE models can add calls, messages, music and other connectivity away from the phone when supported by a compatible carrier plan. Downloaded music and GPS should be prepared before leaving; streaming, synchronization timing and coaching connectivity depend on the model, network and feature.
What running-form data appears afterward?
Google’s motion-sensing analysis includes cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation and ground-contact time (along with related stride characteristics). After saving the workout, open its entry in Google Health to inspect the available metrics and trends. Google’s support explanation is at Google Health running-form support.
These are estimates produced by watch motion sensors and algorithms, not laboratory biomechanical measurements. They can reveal that your cadence or ground-contact time changes as you tire, but they cannot diagnose poor technique, injury or cardiac problems. Treat them as clues to discuss with a qualified professional, not as medical advice or proof that a particular form “prevents” injury.
What happens on the watch versus the Pixel 9?
On Pixel Watch 3
- Start and stop the run.
- Record GPS route, pace, heart rate and workout segments.
- Show the active target and progress.
- Deliver interval, pace and heart-rate audio or vibration cues.
In Fitbit/Google Health on the Pixel 9
- Create or edit structured workouts.
- Review summaries, splits where available, routes and trends.
- Inspect form metrics and personal records.
- View Cardio Load, Target Load and Daily Readiness.
- See recommended runs or adaptive plans when your account and subscription include them.
The Pixel 9 supplies the companion-app screen; it does not provide the watch’s running sensors. The same watch workflow is not exclusive to Pixel 9 hardware, provided the phone meets Google’s compatibility requirements.
How to set up and review a structured run
- Pair and activate Pixel Watch 3 through the Pixel Watch and Google Health setup flow.
- Confirm that the intended Google account is signed in.
- On the watch, open the Exercise or workout function and choose Run.
- Choose the custom-workout or Workout Builder option, where shown.
- Set warmup, work intervals, recoveries, target type and cooldown.
- Start the workout and follow the watch’s prompts.
- End and save the session.
- Open Google Health on the Pixel 9 and select the run from activity or exercise history.
- Review pace, heart rate, route, available splits, records, load and form data.
Google is changing Fitbit labels to Google Health, so menu names can differ by software release, country and account. If you cannot find the dashboard, sync the watch, update Google Health and Pixel Watch, confirm the account, and record a fresh run before trying more drastic troubleshooting. Google’s exercise-start guidance is available at Google Health support.

Is Fitbit Premium required?
“Fitbit Premium” is the older name readers may still see in 2024-era instructions. Google’s current store pages describe the paid tier as Google Health Premium. The current product page is Google Health Premium.
Recommended Free Tools
Generally available in the base experience
- Workout recording and basic activity history.
- Steps, distance and calories.
- Cardio Load and Readiness information listed by Google.
- General sleep and health metrics.
Typically linked to Premium
- Personalized coaching and adaptive fitness plans.
- Recommended runs and deeper coaching context.

Do not assume that every advanced running metric is paywalled everywhere. Google can change entitlements by country, device, account and software version. The US store currently shows Google Health Premium “from $9.99”; the billing period and final offer must be confirmed at checkout. Trials have also changed over time, so an earlier six-month Fitbit offer or a newer three-month Google Health offer is not a permanent entitlement.
Does Pixel Watch 3 work with a Pixel 9?
Yes. A Google account is required for setup. Google Health currently lists Android 11 or newer (and iOS 16.4 or newer for supported phones) for the app at Google’s current requirements page. The Pixel Watch 3 product information separately describes compatibility with most Pixel and Android phones running Android 10 or newer. These are different statements: one concerns the watch’s broader phone compatibility and the other the current Google Health app.
The watch must still be paired and set up with a compatible phone. During a run, recording and on-wrist guidance can work without carrying that phone, while calls, streaming, notifications and other connected functions vary between LTE and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models.
Cardio Load, Target Load and Daily Readiness explained
Cardio Load
An estimate of cardiovascular work or exertion accumulated from activities and the day.
Target Load
A suggested training amount calculated from recent Cardio Load and current readiness, intended to help you choose an appropriate effort.
Daily Readiness
A recovery estimate using signals such as sleep, resting heart rate and heart-rate variability. These are wellness and training estimates, not prescriptions or medical measurements.

Can Pixel Watch 3 replace Garmin, Strava or Runna?
| Runner | Likely assessment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Often yes | Guided workouts, basic metrics and smartwatch functions cover the essentials. |
| Casual 5K runner | Often yes | Intervals, audio cues and history are convenient without another device. |
| Structured half-marathon runner | Possibly | Workout Builder handles sessions, but specialized plans may be deeper elsewhere. |
| Serious marathon athlete | Usually not as a complete replacement | Dedicated platforms generally offer more mature race planning, load analysis and battery endurance. |
| Ultra-distance runner | Unlikely | Long GPS sessions, battery life and endurance-specific analytics favor dedicated watches. |
Garmin, COROS and Polar generally emphasize battery life and sport-specific training depth. Strava adds social sharing, segments and route discovery but does not replace the watch’s sensors or on-wrist cues. Runna focuses more directly on training plans and coaching. Apple Watch is a strong workout platform but is not a practical choice for a Pixel 9 owner because Pixel Watch is not an iPhone accessory.
Common problems and their fixes
The Premium option is missing
Look for Google Health Premium rather than an old Fitbit Premium tab, and check the subscription area in the current Google Health app.
The running dashboard is absent
Finish watch setup, update both apps and watch software, confirm the correct Google account, sync, and record a new run through the watch’s Exercise function. Country or account availability can also matter.
Form metrics are incomplete
Form analysis depends on suitable motion data, a secure fit, a successful sync and often an outdoor run. Indoor sessions, interrupted GPS or poor sensor contact can leave some fields unavailable.
Audio or vibration cues do not occur
Check volume, haptic settings, connected headphones, Do Not Disturb or Bedtime mode, the configured target and whether that workout type supports the desired cue.
App labels do not match instructions
Google’s Fitbit-to-Google-Health transition means screenshots and menu names can differ. Follow the equivalent Exercise, workout-history and subscription sections in your installed version.
Limitations to consider before buying
- Depth: It is a capable smartwatch with running tools, not the deepest dedicated race-training platform.
- Battery: Long GPS or ultra-distance use may favor a specialist watch.
- Subscription: The basic tracker is more compelling if you do not need adaptive coaching or premium content.
- Touchscreen operation: Runners who demand physical buttons may prefer Garmin, COROS or Polar designs.
- Form interpretation: Sensor-derived trends are not a running-lab assessment.
- LTE cost: Cellular independence can require a compatible carrier plan; LTE is not required for ordinary run recording.
Verdict
Pixel Watch 3 is strongest as a Google smartwatch with increasingly serious running capabilities. For Pixel 9 owners who want custom intervals, live audio and haptic guidance, form trends and general health context in one device, it can replace a basic running app and satisfy many beginner-to-intermediate routines. Runners who need maximum battery life, sophisticated race planning, extensive third-party training ecosystems or subscription-free coaching should look at a dedicated running watch or platform instead.
