Apple Watch Series 10 is a stronger overnight health tracker than its predecessors in some important ways: it adds sleep-apnea notifications and the Vitals app, and its thinner design and faster charging make sleeping in the watch more practical. But Blood Oxygen availability is complicated in the U.S.: eligible watches use a redesigned feature that processes data on a paired iPhone, and some U.S. model numbers do not show Blood Oxygen in Vitals. Series 10 is most worthwhile for people who want wellness insights and possible-apnea screening—not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical testing.
What Series 10 adds to health tracking
The biggest health-tracking changes are designed for overnight use. The Vitals app brings several sleep-period measurements together, while sleep-apnea notifications look for a pattern in breathing disturbances over time. Series 10 also has a thinner, lighter case than Series 7, 8, and 9, plus faster charging—practical changes if you want to wear it to bed consistently.
- Vitals: overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration, and Blood Oxygen where available.
- Sleep-apnea notifications: alerts based on a sustained pattern of elevated Breathing Disturbances.
- Wearability: Apple says Series 10 is nearly 10% thinner than Series 7, 8, and 9, and its active display area is up to 9% larger.
- Charging: Apple says eight minutes of charging can provide up to eight hours of sleep tracking.
Those published display, thickness, and charging figures are Apple’s product claims, not independent measurements. The charging figure is an “up to” claim, not a guarantee for every watch, battery condition, or use pattern.
Does Apple Watch Series 10 detect sleep apnea?
It can notify a wearer when data indicates consistent signs of possible sleep apnea. The watch uses its accelerometer to track a metric Apple calls Breathing Disturbances; the algorithm evaluates elevated values across a 30-day period. If the pattern meets Apple’s criteria, the watch can issue a notification and provide a report that the wearer can discuss with a clinician.

Breathing Disturbances is not an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), and a notification is not a diagnosis. The feature is intended to flag signs for follow-up, not to confirm or rule out sleep apnea. Apple says it is not intended for people who have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. If you have symptoms or concerns, seek clinical advice rather than relying on the watch’s readings or waiting for an alert.
What the Vitals app shows—and how to establish a baseline
Vitals is a summary of overnight measurements, not a standalone medical assessment. It can notify you when two or more tracked metrics are outside your typical range. Blood Oxygen is included only where available; its U.S. availability has additional model and software qualifications described below.

- Enable Sleep Tracking and Sleep Focus. Apple Support says both are required for Vitals tracking.
- Wear the watch for seven nights. Apple Support says this is needed to establish your typical range.
- Fit it comfortably and securely. Apple cautions that a loose watch may not capture accurate readings. A compatible breathable band may make overnight wear more comfortable, but it does not guarantee improved accuracy.
- Read an alert as a prompt, not a verdict. Apple says Vitals measurements are not intended for medical use. Discuss concerning patterns or symptoms with a qualified clinician.
Does Series 10 have Blood Oxygen?
The answer depends on the region, model number, and software. Outside the U.S., Blood Oxygen may be available in the Vitals app where the feature is supported. In the U.S., Apple’s August 14, 2025 update says eligible Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 users can enable a redesigned Blood Oxygen feature with iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1. In that version, the paired iPhone calculates the data and results appear in the Health app; this is not the familiar on-watch Blood Oxygen experience.
Apple Support says U.S. models whose part numbers end in LW/A or LS/A do not show Blood Oxygen in Vitals. Do not assume all U.S. Series 10 watches behave identically: check the watch’s model number and purchase history, and confirm that the paired iPhone and watch have the required software before troubleshooting. The feature’s availability is subject to Apple’s eligibility rules.

Is Series 10 comfortable and practical for sleep tracking?
Overnight tracking only works when you can wear the watch consistently. Apple describes Series 10 as nearly 10% thinner than Series 7, 8, and 9, which may help with comfort, while the fast-charging claim addresses the familiar trade-off of charging a watch that is also worn at night. Apple says eight minutes of charging can power up to eight hours of sleep tracking. That is a published maximum, so leave room for charging if your own schedule or battery condition requires more time.
If you do not already wear a watch overnight, try wearing it for several nights before relying on its sleep features. A comfortable fit matters both for consistency and for capturing readings; a band that irritates your skin or a watch that shifts around is a reason to adjust the fit or choose a compatible band that suits overnight wear.

Is Series 10 good for snorkeling?
Series 10 adds a depth gauge that measures down to 6 meters, water-temperature sensing, and a Depth app aimed at snorkeling and shallow-water activities. That makes it better equipped for those uses than a watch without depth sensing. Apple also names Oceanic+ by Huish Outdoors in connection with snorkeling.
Apple’s stated depth limit is 6 meters. Treat that as the scope of the published capability rather than assuming the watch is suitable for deeper diving or that its depth reading replaces dedicated equipment or training.

Who should choose Series 10 for health tracking?
- A good fit: someone who wants overnight wellness trends, can wear and charge the watch regularly, and values a possible-apnea notification as a reason to seek medical advice.
- Less suitable: someone seeking a diagnosis, a replacement for clinical sleep testing, or a tool for managing already-diagnosed sleep apnea.
- Check before buying in the U.S.: if Blood Oxygen matters to you, verify the exact model number and understand whether results will be calculated on the paired iPhone and shown in Health rather than in Vitals.
- For snorkeling: its depth gauge is specified to 6 meters and the Depth app is aimed at shallow-water activities.
