Apple Watch Series 10 is thinner, has a larger display, charges faster, and adds depth and water-temperature sensors. Series 9 still shares the 18-hour normal-use battery rating and supports sleep-apnea notifications, so the newer model is most compelling if its design, charging, or shallow-water features matter to you—and its local price premium is reasonable.

What changes in Series 10?
A thinner case and more display area
Series 10’s case is 9.7 mm deep, compared with 10.7 mm for Series 9. The size options also shift from 41 mm and 45 mm to 42 mm and 46 mm. Series 10’s display offers up to 9% more active screen area than Series 7, 8 and 9, according to Apple. That extra space can make information easier to see and interact with, while the thinner profile may feel less bulky on the wrist.
Both models list a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits. Series 10’s distinct display claim is that it is up to 40% brighter than Series 9 when viewed at an angle—not that it has a higher peak-brightness rating. These are Apple’s comparisons, not independent measurements.
#1 Best Overall

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Shorter charging breaks, not longer rated battery life
Apple rates both generations for up to 18 hours of normal use and up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode. Series 10’s advantage is charging speed: Apple says it can reach up to 80% in about 30 minutes, versus about 45 minutes for Series 9. Apple also says a 15-minute Series 10 charge can provide up to 8 hours of normal use. Actual charging and runtime vary with use and conditions.
Faster top-ups may help if you remove your watch overnight or want to charge briefly before bed, but Series 10 does not improve the stated normal-use battery-life rating.

More information for shallow-water activities
Both watches are rated water-resistant to 50 meters for swimming. Series 10 adds a depth gauge rated to 6 meters and a water-temperature sensor, which can be useful for snorkeling and other shallow-water outings. A 50-meter water-resistance rating does not make either watch suitable for scuba diving or high-velocity water sports; follow Apple’s activity and water-use guidance for your model.
Which everyday features do both watches share?
Sleep-apnea notifications are supported on Series 9 and later, so they are not exclusive to Series 10. Apple describes the feature as intended to identify signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea in adults aged 18 or older who have not been diagnosed. It is a notification feature, not a diagnosis or treatment, and availability can vary by region. Check Apple’s feature comparison and local availability before relying on it.

If your priorities are the everyday smartwatch and health functions you already use, the newer generation does not automatically offer a reason to replace Series 9. The meaningful differences in this comparison are primarily the display and case, charging, and added shallow-water sensors.
Should you choose Series 10 or Series 9?
Choose Series 10 if

- You prefer a thinner case or one of the newer 42 mm or 46 mm sizes.

Verdict
Series 10 is the more capable choice for a larger, thinner watch that charges faster and adds shallow-water sensing. Series 9 remains a sensible alternative if it costs substantially less and its shared battery rating and everyday features meet your needs. Base the decision on the actual price difference and the Series 10 upgrades you will use.
