As of August 2026, the useful question is not what Apple just announced, but which differences justify buying one now. Series 11 is the everyday all-rounder, SE 3 is the value choice with a newly Always-On display, and Ultra 3 is built for longer battery life and outdoor use. Several headline software features also work on older compatible watches, so an upgrade is not automatically necessary.
At a glance: the three Apple Watches
Prices below are U.S. launch starting prices, not a claim about current store or retailer pricing. Configurations can cost more depending on size, material, and cellular connectivity.
| Model | U.S. launch price | Case and materials | Apple battery rating | Standout differences |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | Starting at $249 | 40mm or 44mm aluminum | Up to 18 hours | Always-On display, S10 chip, sleep features, 5G on cellular models; no ECG app |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | Starting at $399; titanium starts at $699 | 42mm or 46mm aluminum or titanium | Up to 24 hours | Hypertension notifications, ECG, sleep features, more scratch-resistant aluminum glass, 5G on cellular models |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Starting at $799 | 49mm titanium, natural or black; cellular included | Up to 42 hours; up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode | Satellite features, brightest and largest Apple Watch display to date, advanced outdoor capabilities |
Apple’s battery figures are estimates from controlled testing, not guaranteed runtimes; actual life varies with GPS, cellular use, workouts, settings, signal, and other conditions. Apple details the battery methodology and qualifications in its technical specifications and feature notes.
What Series 11 changes for everyday use
Health and sleep insights
Series 11 adds hypertension notifications. The watch analyzes optical heart-sensor data over 30-day periods for patterns associated with chronic high blood pressure. It does not measure blood pressure and cannot diagnose hypertension. If it issues a notification, Apple advises taking blood-pressure readings with a third-party cuff for seven days and sharing them with a healthcare provider. See Apple’s Series 11 announcement for the feature description.

Series 11 includes ECG and sleep-apnea notifications as well; health features have eligibility, software, and regional constraints.
Battery, glass, and connectivity
Apple rates Series 11 for up to 24 hours, compared with the previous generation’s 18-hour rating. Apple says 15 minutes of charging can provide up to eight hours of battery life. Aluminum models use Ion-X glass that Apple says is twice as scratch-resistant as the previous generation; that is Apple’s comparative claim, not an independent durability test. Cellular versions add 5G. The S10 chip is present, but owners of recent S10 watches should not expect a major processor-generation leap.
Series 11 comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes, in aluminum or polished titanium. Aluminum colors are space gray, jet black, rose gold, and silver; titanium finishes are natural, gold, and slate.

Why choose Ultra 3?
Outdoor-first display and endurance
Ultra 3 keeps a 49mm titanium case and introduces a wide-angle OLED/LTPO3 display with thinner borders. Apple calls it the largest display in an Apple Watch and rates peak brightness at up to 3,000 nits. Its battery rating is up to 42 hours of normal use or 72 hours in Low Power Mode. Apple also specifies up to 14 hours of outdoor workout tracking with full GPS and heart-rate readings. Fast charging is rated at up to 12 hours of normal use from 15 minutes.
The watch supports advanced GPS and outdoor navigation, is water-resistant to 100 meters, and supports recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with compatible software. It is the better fit for long outings, diving, endurance training, or users who value a large readable display and titanium construction. The trade-off is physical: it is the largest and most expensive of the three, and buyers used to smaller watches may find the 49mm body bulky.
Satellite features, with important limits
Ultra 3 is the only one of these three with satellite communication. When cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, it supports Emergency SOS, Messages, and Find My location sharing via satellite. Apple’s technical notes say Emergency SOS, Find My, and Messages via satellite are included at no charge for two years after activation; Find My and Messages require a carrier plan, and SMS via satellite has additional paired-iPhone and connectivity requirements. Satellite use needs a clear view of the sky and can be affected by terrain and conditions. Availability and response times vary by location. It is an integrated emergency and basic-communication option, not a substitute for a dedicated expedition satellite communicator. Details and limitations are in Apple’s Ultra 3 technical notes.

Ultra 3 also has 5G cellular and supports hypertension notifications, Sleep Score, ECG, sleep-apnea notifications, heart-rate alerts, and Blood Oxygen functionality where available. Blood Oxygen availability is subject to regional and product-specific restrictions.
What SE 3 offers—and what it leaves out
SE 3 is more than a notifications watch. It adds an Always-On display to the value tier, uses the S10 chip, supports 5G on cellular models, and gains Sleep Score, wrist-temperature sensing, retrospective ovulation estimates, and sleep-apnea notifications. It supports Double Tap and wrist-flick gestures, and on-device Siri can handle supported requests, including access to health data. Apple says the Ion-X cover glass is four times more crack-resistant than the previous SE generation; this is Apple’s stated comparison.
Fast charging can provide up to eight hours of daily-use battery from 15 minutes, and Apple says an 80% charge takes about 45 minutes. The rated battery life remains up to 18 hours. SE 3 includes safety and fitness tools such as Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, Check In, heart-health notifications, Cycle Tracking, and cardio-fitness features. It does not include the ECG app. For specifications and feature qualifications, see Apple’s SE 3 announcement.

Which model fits which buyer?
| If your priority is… | Best fit | Why | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest entry cost and core smartwatch features | SE 3 | Always-On display, modern chip, sleep and safety features, fast charging | ECG, longest battery, premium materials, satellite services, advanced outdoor capabilities |
| Daily health, sleep, fitness, and lighter wear | Series 11 | Broad feature set, 24-hour battery rating, two case sizes and material choices | Ultra 3’s longer battery, satellite connectivity, and rugged 49mm design |
| Long outings, outdoor navigation, or satellite safety | Ultra 3 | Longest rated battery, titanium case, large bright display, satellite functions | Lower price, smaller size, and lighter feel |
Choose SE 3 if ECG and the most capable outdoor hardware are not requirements. Series 11 is the sensible general-purpose step-up for people who want ECG and more battery headroom. Ultra 3’s premium makes most sense when its size, battery, outdoor functions, or satellite services solve a real need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which features come from watchOS 26 rather than a new watch?
watchOS 26 launched September 15, 2025, shortly before the new watches reached stores. Sleep Score, Workout Buddy, the Liquid Glass interface, wrist-flick gesture, new watch faces, Notes, and Live Translation in Messages are software capabilities, with availability depending on compatible hardware, language, and region. Hold Assist and Call Screening rely on a suitable paired iPhone. Several watchOS 26 features are available on older compatible watches, so do not buy a new model solely for a software feature without checking support for the watch you already own. Apple’s watchOS feature-availability page provides regional and device qualifications.
The new hardware distinctions are more concrete: Ultra 3’s satellite communication, 49mm titanium body, endurance and display; Series 11’s revised aluminum glass and 5G cellular models; and SE 3’s move to an Always-On display and S10 generation.

Compatibility, cellular, and health-feature caveats
Check the paired iPhone first
All three models require iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 26 or later. Some features require a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby. Cellular functions require a cellular watch and a supported carrier plan; coverage and service availability vary by country and network. Check Apple’s cellular information and the carrier’s terms before paying extra for cellular.
Understand what health alerts can and cannot tell you
- Hypertension notifications flag patterns for follow-up; they are not cuff readings or a diagnosis.
- Sleep-apnea notifications look for signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea; they are not a diagnosis.
- Wrist temperature and cycle features provide wellness data and estimates, not definitive medical conclusions.
- ECG is unavailable on SE models. Blood Oxygen and other health functions can vary by market, authorization, age eligibility, and software version.
Consult a healthcare professional about symptoms or concerning results rather than treating a watch notification as a diagnosis. Apple’s feature notes outline additional restrictions in the technical specifications.
Should owners of an older Apple Watch upgrade?
For owners of a recent watch, the model number alone is a weak reason to replace it. Recent S10-based watches are not likely to feel dramatically faster from a chip change, and compatible older watches receive a number of watchOS 26 features. An upgrade has a clearer case if the existing battery no longer lasts the day, or if a specific new capability changes how you will use the watch.
- Consider SE 3 if you have an older SE and want an Always-On display, newer health and sleep features, and faster charging at a lower starting price.
- Consider Series 11 if battery life, 5G, the revised aluminum-glass durability claim, or hypertension notifications address a gap in your current model.
- Consider Ultra 3 if you need its satellite tools, larger outdoor display, or longer rated runtime; it is a poor value if those capabilities will go unused.
Launch prices versus what to pay now
The U.S. launch MSRPs were $249 for SE 3, $399 for Series 11, $699 for Series 11 titanium, and $799 for Ultra 3. These historical starting prices do not establish the current August 2026 price. Check Apple’s store for current configurations, stock, refurbished listings, financing, and trade-in offers; retailer discounts may differ. A cellular configuration also brings recurring carrier costs, so compare the ongoing plan fee with how often you expect to leave your iPhone behind.
Apple’s announcements described a three-month Fitness+ and Apple Music offer for eligible new subscribers at launch, but an offer stated at launch should not be assumed to remain available. Check current terms for any promotion before factoring it into the purchase.
