Apple’s reported answer to Ray-Ban Meta may arrive in late 2027, possibly after a WWDC unveiling in June. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on display-free AI glasses with cameras or visual sensors, microphones, speakers and deep iPhone integration. Apple has not confirmed the product, its name, launch date, price or specifications.
If the reports are accurate, this first generation would be closer to Meta’s camera-and-audio glasses than to transparent-display augmented-reality glasses. The main strategic difference may be privacy rather than a visual overlay.
What the 2027 report actually says
The schedule has moved repeatedly in reported coverage, so 2027 is a target rather than a commitment.
| Reported date | Reported plan | Source |
|---|---|---|
| May 2025 | Apple was reportedly aiming for smart glasses by the end of 2026. | Bloomberg Law |
| April 2026 | Secondary reports described several frame designs, a display-free product and a possible late-2026 unveiling or 2027 release. One report associated the project with the internal codename N50. | TechCrunch; MacRumors |
| May 31, 2026 | The reported target slipped to late 2027, roughly a year later than the earlier plan. | MacRumors |
| July 26, 2026 | A possible unveiling at WWDC 2027 was reported, followed by consumer availability toward the end of that year. | MacRumors |
These are successive reports attributed primarily to Gurman and summarized by other outlets, not Apple announcements. An unveiling, preorder date, ship date and broad retail availability would be separate milestones.

Display-free smart glasses, not a Vision Pro replacement
The reported first product should not be described as confirmed “Apple Glass” augmented-reality eyewear. Current coverage points to ordinary-looking glasses without an in-lens display. They would provide assistance through audio, a connected phone and AI that interprets the wearer’s surroundings.
That distinction matters. Display-free smart glasses can identify an object, answer a question, read text aloud or handle a call. True AR glasses add transparent displays, spatial anchoring and visual overlays. No holographic interface or Vision Pro-style spatial display has been confirmed for this first generation. Later Apple hardware could pursue those capabilities, but that is a separate possibility.

Features reportedly under consideration
- Cameras or visual sensors for environmental understanding and possibly hands-free capture.
- Microphones for voice commands, calls and interaction with an assistant.
- Open-ear speakers for responses, navigation, music and communication.
- Siri or a substantially improved Siri and Apple Intelligence experience.
- Visual recognition and contextual assistance.
- iPhone connectivity and Apple-service integration.
- Several conventional frame designs rather than a headset-like enclosure.
Reports have not established the camera count or resolution, battery capacity, weight, water resistance, prescription-lens support, cellular connectivity, operating system, subscription requirements or final price. The product name is also unknown; “Apple Glasses” and N50 are informal or internal labels, not confirmed retail names.
Why Apple may have delayed the project
The strongest reported explanation is software readiness. Coverage has linked the delay to doubts about whether Apple’s AI and Visual Intelligence systems are capable enough to make glasses useful in daily life, as reported by 9to5Mac.

Glasses have less battery, fewer controls and no screen on which to correct an answer. They need quick, context-aware responses while relying on small speakers, a phone and sometimes cloud connectivity. Misidentified objects, delayed answers or incorrect directions would be especially irritating from a device worn continuously. Privacy controls must also be understandable to people nearby, not only to the wearer. The available reporting supports a software-readiness explanation, not a complete engineering postmortem.

Reports describe two possible directions:
- Camera-enabled capture: Apple follows Meta by allowing hands-free photos and videos.
- AI-only or restricted capture: cameras analyze the environment but cannot save conventional photos and videos, or recording is limited by software policy.
MacRumors reported that Apple was considering cameras for AI assistance without ordinary photo and video recording, but that decision was not final: MacRumors’ July report. Capture would make Apple’s glasses more directly competitive and give people an obvious everyday use. Restricting it could improve social acceptance, but might remove one of the main reasons to wear camera glasses.

Why privacy may be Apple’s main differentiator
Apple could emphasize a visible recording indicator, prominent camera and microphone controls, app permissions, on-device processing where practical and limits on storing or sharing images. That would fit Apple’s established privacy positioning, but it would not make the social problem disappear.
- A camera can observe people even when footage is not saved.
- AI processing may still send information to the cloud.
- Audio, calls and live interactions create separate privacy concerns.
- Bystanders may not know whether a camera is active, even with an indicator.
- Schools, workplaces, hospitals, courts, gyms and private events can ban camera-equipped eyewear regardless of brand.
Apple has not shown that it has solved these issues. Privacy is a reported positioning goal, not a confirmed product advantage.
What “coming in 2027” means for buyers
A WWDC 2027 unveiling would not necessarily mean same-day retail availability. Apple could show hardware at its developer conference, open preorders later and ship toward the end of the year. Prescription and regional availability could expand after the initial release. None of those dates is confirmed.
Should you wait for Apple or buy Meta now?
Wait for Apple if
- You already use an iPhone and value Apple’s ecosystem, accessibility or privacy controls.
- You do not need camera glasses immediately and can tolerate another delay.
- You want to see whether Apple connects the product to a broader spatial-computing strategy.
Buy Ray-Ban Meta now if
- You want hands-free photos, videos, calls, messaging, open-ear audio or translation before late 2027.
- You prefer established Ray-Ban frame styles and currently available prescription options.
- You accept a Meta account, companion app, phone and the privacy implications of camera-equipped glasses.
Wait for clearer specifications if
- You require prescription compatibility, all-day battery life or operation without a phone or cloud AI.
- You expect an in-lens display or true AR overlays.
- You need a firm price, camera policy or country availability before deciding.
Android users should note that Meta supports compatible Android and iOS phones, while Apple’s likely feature set may be more heavily optimized for iPhone; that Apple emphasis is an inference, not a confirmed compatibility restriction. International buyers should verify local language and feature support before purchase.

Apple’s reported 2027 glasses look less like the long-awaited transparent-display “Apple Glass” and more like a first-generation AI eyewear platform. Their success against Ray-Ban Meta will depend on whether Apple can deliver fast visual assistance and a convincing privacy policy without removing the camera features that make Meta’s glasses useful. Until Apple publishes specifications and a release date, Ray-Ban Meta is the only option for buyers who want this category now.
