Apple’s sleep-apnea feature is real, not merely a rumor. Apple calls it Sleep Apnea Notifications. On supported Apple Watch models, it analyzes overnight motion data for recurring breathing-disturbance patterns associated with possible moderate-to-severe sleep apnea. It is a screening prompt—not a diagnosis—and a newer watch is not necessarily required.
How the original “reported” story changed
The September 2024 report described a pre-launch Apple feature that might arrive on new watches and might not work on the first day of sale. Read it here: the original report.
Apple subsequently announced Sleep Apnea Notifications, obtained U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance (decision date September 13, 2024), and enabled the feature on supported hardware. “Detection” is an easy shorthand, but Apple’s product is a notification system that looks for a sustained pattern over multiple nights; it does not identify every apnea event or calculate a clinical apnea-hypopnea index.
Which Apple Watch models support Sleep Apnea Notifications?
Apple’s current support listing names these compatible models (availability can still vary by region, language, model variant and software):

How the feature works
It estimates breathing disturbances from movement
Apple says the algorithm uses the watch’s accelerometer to estimate breathing disturbances during sleep. The watch is not directly viewing an obstructed airway, and this is not presented as a pulse-oximeter diagnosis. Apple’s technical description is available in its Sleep Apnea Notifications document.
It needs repeated overnight data
- Wear the watch while sleeping with sleep tracking enabled.
- The watch records a nightly breathing-disturbance status.
- Apple evaluates data in a 30-day window and requires at least 10 usable nights.
- If elevated nights make up more than half of the minimum required days in that window, the feature may issue a notification.
Nights are classified as Elevated, Not Elevated or No Data. “No Data” can result from not wearing the watch, excessive movement, an inability to measure, or a restart during the sleep session. Alcohol, an upper-respiratory illness and some medicines can also raise disturbance measurements, so an unusual night is not proof of chronic sleep apnea.

How to turn on Sleep Apnea Notifications
Setup is performed from the paired iPhone, not solely on the watch.
- Open the Health app.
- Tap Search, then choose Respiratory.
- Under Sleep Apnea Notifications, tap Set Up.
- Answer the age and previous-diagnosis questions and complete the prompts.
- Confirm that sleep tracking is enabled, then wear the watch overnight.
Apple’s regulatory instructions also describe Health → Browse → Sleep → Sleep Apnea Notifications → Set Up Notifications as an alternative route. If the option is missing, update the iPhone and watch, verify the model, and check regional availability.

What a notification means—and does not mean
A notification means Apple found a recurring pattern associated with possible moderate-to-severe sleep apnea. The FDA-cleared indication describes the software as an over-the-counter feature for adults aged 18 or older who have not previously been diagnosed. The FDA record is at K240929, with the indications letter at this FDA PDF.
- It is not intended to diagnose, treat or manage sleep apnea.
- Not everyone with sleep apnea will receive a notification.
- No notification does not rule out sleep apnea.
- People already diagnosed should not use it as a replacement for treatment monitoring.
Symptoms such as loud snoring, witnessed pauses, gasping, morning headaches or excessive daytime sleepiness warrant medical advice even if the watch never alerts you.

- EASY TO USE AND WASH: Simple to put on and take off with no batteries, wires or noise - a reusable non-electronic sleep position aid that is machine washable for easy cleaning and nightly wear
What to do after an alert
In the Health app, you can review breathing-disturbance history for the previous month, six months or year. Apple also lets you export a PDF report to share with a clinician. A healthcare professional may recommend a home sleep-apnea test or laboratory polysomnography. Those evaluations can measure airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen, brain activity, eye movement and muscle activity—measurements the watch does not replicate.
Do you need to buy a new Apple Watch?
No. Owners of a Series 9, Series 10 or Ultra 2 may already have access, and Apple’s current list includes SE 3. Check your existing model and software before shopping. Apple has not established that a more expensive or newer compatible model produces a medically superior apnea result.
If you are buying specifically for this feature
- Verify Sleep Apnea Notifications support for the exact model, country and language.
- Choose a watch comfortable enough to wear for at least 10 usable nights in a 30-day window.
- Consider battery life and charging habits so overnight data is not lost.
- Remember that an iPhone is required.
- Buy an Ultra for its rugged build, display and battery advantages only if those broader features matter—not because Apple says it detects apnea better.
Apple’s official watch store is apple.com/watch; the Ultra 2 page is here, and the SE page is here. Prices change, so consult Apple for current figures.
When an Apple Watch is the wrong tool
- You do not use an iPhone.
- You cannot wear a watch reliably overnight.
- You need a diagnosis now rather than a screening signal.
- You already have diagnosed apnea and want CPAP or treatment management.
- You would interpret a negative result as proof that you are healthy.
For serious or persistent symptoms, contacting a healthcare professional is more appropriate than waiting for wearable data.

Apple announced availability in the United States and more than 150 countries and regions after regulatory authorizations. That does not guarantee availability on every watch, language or account. The FDA’s 510(k) clearance is clearance for the specified software indication, not FDA approval of a diagnostic sleep study. Apple’s regulatory instructions are published here.
