When did the Apple Watch Ultra 2 come out?
Apple announced Apple Watch Ultra 2 on September 12, 2023, with retail availability beginning Friday, September 22, 2023. At launch, Apple positioned it as an update to the original Ultra rather than a redesign, emphasizing its S9 SiP, new controls and display improvements. Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams said, “This year we’ve made our most rugged and capable Apple Watch even better.” (Apple’s 2023 announcement.)
What’s new on Apple Watch Ultra 2?
S9 SiP, on-device Siri, and double tap
The S9 SiP brought system-wide performance improvements and enabled some Siri requests to be processed directly on the watch. Apple said its four-core Neural Engine could handle machine-learning tasks up to twice as fast as the original Ultra; that is Apple’s comparison, not an independent benchmark.
Double tap lets you bring your thumb and index finger together twice to trigger common primary actions without touching the screen. Apple’s examples include answering a call, pausing media, stopping a timer, snoozing an alarm, and moving through Smart Stack widgets.

Brighter display
Apple specified a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits, 50 percent higher than the first Ultra’s maximum, and a minimum brightness of 1 nit for dark settings. These are Apple-published specifications, not a guarantee of a particular viewing experience in every condition.
Outdoor, altitude, and water features
Apple highlighted Precision Finding for iPhone, an expanded altitude range, and diving capabilities. At launch, it described recreational scuba diving to 40 metres and freediving with the Oceanic+ app, developed with Huish Outdoors. Those features complement the watch’s outdoor focus, but the water ratings use distinct standards: Apple lists 100 m water resistance under ISO 22810:2010 and recreational diving to 40 m under EN13319. What changed with the 2024 Apple Watch Ultra 2 refresh?
On September 10, 2024, Apple announced a black titanium finish for Ultra 2, available in stores starting September 20. It was a finish and software-feature refresh, not a new Ultra 2 launch. The model retained its 3,000-nit maximum display brightness, 36-hour normal-use battery estimate and up-to-72-hour Low Power Mode estimate, according to Apple’s announcement.
The accompanying watchOS 11 updates added Training Load, the Vitals app, more Action button options, and the Tides app, alongside activity updates for running, cycling, swimming, hiking, and diving. Apple said the Tides app offers seven-day rolling tide forecasts. For battery estimates, Apple also cited up to 12 hours of outdoor workouts, or up to 35 hours with all low-power settings enabled; actual results depend on use. (Apple’s 2024 Ultra 2 announcement.)

Is Apple Watch Ultra 2 still supported?
Yes. As of October 4, 2026, Apple lists Ultra 2 or later as compatible with watchOS 27. Apple’s stated requirements are an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27. As of October 4, 2026, Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the latest announced Ultra model. Apple announced it on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Ultra 2 remains a supported model, but it is two generations older. Apple’s current software compatibility listing establishes that Ultra 2 can run watchOS 27; it does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison with Ultra 4. Avoid assuming that Ultra 2 has Ultra 4’s hardware or every newer feature.
