For an iPhone owner, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the better smartwatch; the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5 is the better traditional luxury watch. Apple offers deeper iPhone integration, broader health and safety tools, cellular and satellite connectivity, a larger app ecosystem, and a much lower US starting price. TAG Heuer answers with a round case, sapphire crystal, integrated luxury-watch styling, and distinctive TAG Heuer design. Choose the E5 only if that watch-first experience matters more to you than Apple’s functionality.

Apple lists Ultra 3 compatibility as an iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, running iOS 26 or later: Apple’s technical specifications. TAG Heuer lists iOS 18 or later and Android 13 or later for the E5 40mm: TAG Heuer’s product page.
Design: luxury watch versus outdoor computer
TAG Heuer’s advantage is its shape and presentation
The E5 looks like a conventional watch. Its round case, TAG Heuer dials and interchangeable straps suit formal clothing more naturally than Apple’s rectangular silhouette. The 40mm steel version is 14mm thick and has a sapphire-domed crystal, a 1.2-inch OLED panel and 390 × 390 resolution at 326 dpi. The 45mm models create a larger, sportier presence.
That is a design preference, not proof of superior construction or longevity. The E5’s premium price buys brand identity, materials, case and strap design, and a watch-like experience rather than more capable iPhone computing.

Ultra 3 is built around rugged use
Ultra 3 uses a 49mm titanium case, sapphire crystal, an Action button, Digital Crown and side button. Its design is unmistakably Apple Watch, but it is purpose-built for outdoor sports, diving and endurance activities. The case can be paired with Ocean, Alpine, Trail or titanium Milanese bands.
The size difference matters. A 40mm E5 can be easier to wear on a smaller wrist or with a suit; a 45mm E5 is visually closer to Ultra 3, though it remains round. Try both case sizes rather than comparing a 40mm E5 directly with a 49mm Ultra.
Display and everyday readability
Ultra 3 has an always-on LTPO3 OLED display rated at up to 3,000 nits. That published brightness figure gives Apple the clear specification advantage for bright outdoor conditions, maps and workout screens. Its larger rectangular surface also leaves more room for text and complications.
TAG Heuer publishes the E5 40mm’s OLED size, resolution and sapphire protection, but not a directly comparable brightness figure on the cited page. Sapphire brings excellent scratch resistance and a premium feel; it does not by itself establish better visibility.
Which works better with an iPhone?
Apple controls the complete experience
Ultra 3 is integrated into the iPhone at operating-system level. Pairing, Apple Health, Workout, Messages, Phone, Maps, Find My, Siri, Apple Music, Podcasts and Apple Pay are designed as one system. A cellular model can handle calls, messages, notifications, music and podcasts away from the phone when a supported carrier plan is active.

Apple also supports Family Setup in supported circumstances, although capability and administration differ from pairing a watch to your own iPhone. Precision Finding, continuity features and Apple-native safety services are advantages a third-party watch cannot reproduce on equal terms.
E5 supports iPhone, but through TAG Heuer’s layer
The E5 connects through TAG Heuer OS and the TAG Heuer Connected app. TAG Heuer’s App Store listing describes watch calls, face customization, sports, wellness and golf functions: TAG Heuer Connected on the App Store. The watch supports Wi‑Fi, GNSS, Bluetooth 5.3 and MFi connectivity.
That can cover notifications, calls and selected wellness functions, but “works with iPhone” is not the same as Apple Watch feature parity. The reviewed E5 pages do not list cellular or 5G, so treat it as dependent on Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi for many connected tasks rather than as a full independent phone replacement.
Payments are not equivalent
Ultra 3 uses Apple Pay, subject to your country, bank and card. TAG Heuer’s official FAQ discusses Google Wallet depending on the model and whether the watch is paired with iOS or Android: TAG Heuer’s payment FAQ. Do not assume Google Wallet support is Apple Pay support; verify the exact E5 reference and local banking compatibility before buying. For a US iPhone user who wants dependable wrist payments, Apple is the safer choice.
Changing phones favors TAG Heuer
Apple Watch is an iPhone product. The E5’s Android 13+ support is useful in a cross-platform household or if you may leave iPhone later. That flexibility is its main ecosystem advantage, but it also means TAG Heuer controls a smaller, more specialized software environment.

Health, fitness and sport
Ultra 3 is the stronger health platform
Apple lists ECG, high- and low-heart-rate alerts, irregular-rhythm notifications, low-cardio-fitness notifications, sleep tracking, sleep score, sleep-apnea notifications, wrist-temperature sensing and Vitals. Hypertension notifications and the Blood Oxygen app are subject to regional, legal and software limitations.
Training tools include heart-rate zones, training load, VO₂ max, workout views, race route and pacer features. Fall Detection and Crash Detection add safety value beyond exercise recording.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →E5 covers core wellness and has a golf identity
TAG Heuer lists a heart-rate sensor, compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, altimeter and GNSS. Its wellness features include sleep-related SpO₂, breathing-rate and HRV metrics, while TAG Heuer Sports, Wellness and Golf apps cover running, cycling, swimming, hiking and workouts.
The E5 Golf editions deserve attention if golf is central to your purchase: course-focused mapping and scoring are part of the product’s identity. For broad health data, training analysis and third-party options, Apple remains the more capable platform. Sensor lists alone do not prove that either watch is more accurate, and neither should be treated as a medical diagnostic device.
Outdoor, water and emergency capability
Ultra 3 is in a different category for adventure use. Apple lists 100m water resistance, recreational diving support, a depth gauge to 40m, a water-temperature sensor, IP6X dust resistance and precision dual-frequency GPS. Cellular connectivity, Emergency SOS, satellite communications and the built-in siren matter when you are away from your phone or cellular coverage.

The 40mm E5 is rated to 50m and includes GNSS, an altimeter, compass and sports tracking. Those are useful features, but they do not make it an equivalent diving, remote-travel or emergency watch. The E5 should be chosen for its luxury presentation, not for matching Ultra 3’s safety hardware.
Battery and charging: read the mode labels
| Model and condition | Published estimate | Charging information |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Ultra 3, normal use | Up to 42 hours | 0–80% in about 45 minutes |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3, Low Power Mode | Up to 72 hours | Apple also says 15 minutes can provide up to 12 hours normal use and 5 minutes up to 8 hours of sleep tracking |
| TAG Heuer E5 40mm, full performance | 1.5 days | Full charge about 90 minutes under stated temperature conditions |
| TAG Heuer E5 40mm, Low Power | 2 days | TAG Heuer says about 30 minutes provides a full day of use |
| TAG Heuer E5 45mm, Low Power | Up to 3 days | Mode and model conditions apply |
These are manufacturer estimates measured under different conditions, not directly comparable laboratory results. GPS, calls, cellular use, health sensors, an always-on display and temperature can reduce endurance. On the published full-performance figures, Ultra 3 lasts longer than the 40mm E5. The 45mm E5 looks competitive only in Low Power Mode, which limits behavior compared with full performance.
Price and what the premium actually buys
Apple’s US buying page lists Ultra 3 from $799; a titanium Milanese Loop configuration is listed at $899. See Apple’s buying page and configuration page. Trade-in credits, financing and temporary offers do not change the list price.
TAG Heuer’s US collection shows approximately $1,750–$1,950 for 45mm steel models and about $2,450–$2,550 for titanium or black DLC titanium versions; 40mm pricing varies by configuration. Check the current E5 collection for the exact reference.
Depending on configuration, E5 costs roughly two to three times as much. That premium is rational only when traditional styling, sapphire, TAG Heuer branding and the ownership experience are worth more to you than health, connectivity and software capability. It does not buy a more capable iPhone smartwatch.

- Snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, rowing, and more — you’ll find tons of additional ways to take your favorite sports and activities to the next level with Ultra 3 in the App Store. Tap in. Max out.
Software risk and long-term ownership
watchOS benefits from Apple’s control of the iPhone, watch hardware and first-party services. The E5’s TAG Heuer OS can feel coherent and brand-specific, but it has a smaller ecosystem and greater dependence on TAG Heuer’s app and update roadmap. Do not infer an exact support lifespan or superior durability from price or brand reputation; no official lifetime promise is established here.
Before purchasing either watch, confirm the current phone software, regional health features, carrier support, payment availability and the exact E5 size and reference. Apple cellular service requires GPS + Cellular hardware, a supported carrier and an active plan; the plan is an additional recurring cost.
Who should buy each watch?
Choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 if you:
- want the most complete smartwatch experience with an iPhone;
- prioritize Apple Health, training data, calls, messaging, Maps, Find My or Apple Pay;
- hike, run, cycle, dive or travel where cellular and satellite safety matter;
- want the stronger outdoor display and broader app ecosystem;
- want substantially more capability for a lower starting price.
Choose TAG Heuer Connected E5 if you:
- care more about a round luxury-watch appearance than maximum smartwatch breadth;
- value TAG Heuer branding, sapphire crystal and proprietary watch faces;
- need iPhone and Android compatibility;
- mainly want notifications, calls, activity tracking and selected sports or golf tools;
- accept paying a large premium for design and brand experience.
Do not buy the E5 expecting:
- Apple Health, Apple Pay, cellular or satellite parity;
- the same safety hardware, diving support or third-party app breadth;
- the best price-to-function ratio.
Verdict
If the question is “Which smartwatch works best with my iPhone?”, buy the Apple Watch Ultra 3. It is the better overall smartwatch, sports device, health monitor and value.
If the question is “Which luxury watch would I rather wear that also provides modern smart features?”, the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5 is the compelling alternative. Its premium is for traditional watch design, materials and identity—not for superior iPhone functionality.
